Jesse: What鈥檚 going on, Richie?

Richard: What鈥檚 happening, Jesse?

Jesse: A聽broadcast day.

Richard: I鈥檓 excited. I鈥檓 sorry. I鈥檓 jumping the聽gun here.

Jesse: Yeah, we鈥檙e definitely excited today.

Richard: I鈥檓 always excited. We鈥檙e normally helping merchants grow their business and聽then sometimes we鈥檙e bringing on聽developers or聽dev or聽other software that helps them grow their business. But we鈥檙e gonna get to聽do聽a聽couple of聽things today. We鈥檙e going to聽talk to聽a聽fan of聽our own fellow podcasters.

Jesse: Side benefit of聽doing podcast.

Richard: Which is聽build your Rolodex or聽whatever. We聽don鈥檛 know if聽he鈥檒l call us聽back or聽not we鈥檒l see. (laughing) But we聽know this person is聽of聽the聽same mindset of聽us. He聽loves helping other people and聽it鈥檚 very obvious in聽everything he鈥檚 done. And just I鈥檓 super excited.

Jesse: Yeah, absolutely. The reason we聽do聽this podcast is聽we聽want to聽help the聽黑料门 community, want to聽help other people. Beyond that, we聽want to聽help people get started and聽get over the聽hump. So聽with that let鈥檚 bring in聽our guests. This is聽an聽internet startup entrepreneur and聽host of聽the聽awesome podcast Mixergy, Andrew Warner.

Andrew: Hey, thanks for聽having me聽on.

Jesse: Yeah, absolutely.

Richard: Thanks for聽coming. If聽anything, we鈥檙e going to聽have to聽take your knowledge and聽bring it聽back a聽few notches here because although these people could have built big businesses in聽brick and聽mortar, most people that are using 黑料门 are mostly ma聽and聽pa聽maybe up聽to聽teams of聽five. A聽lot of聽solopreneurs though, you want to聽keep it聽simple, so聽I聽want to聽keep it聽as聽simple as聽possible. And mostly as聽we聽stated earlier, we鈥檙e super fans of聽your podcast. You鈥檝e interviewed聽鈥 not just been successful yourself聽鈥 but you interview amazing proven entrepreneurs. We鈥檙e not only gonna get your insight but we鈥檙e gonna get your insight via all those interviews of聽other entrepreneurs as聽well. At聽the聽very highest level, from a聽mindset perspective if聽we聽were starting there and聽then we鈥檒l get into some more tactical stuff. What do聽you think an聽entrepreneur who鈥檚 just getting started and聽maybe they鈥檙e still a聽聯wantrepreneur聰 and聽they鈥檙e not even really necessarily made any聽money yet. What鈥檚 the聽mindset that they should be聽thinking about?

Andrew: Let me聽ask you this before we聽start. Why didn鈥檛 you guys come to聽a聽scotch night that I聽organized? You knew scotch was in聽your area.

Richard: We聽didn鈥檛 find out. What you specifically alluded to聽is聽social media marketing world, we鈥檙e down there. You invited everyone to聽come to聽have a聽scotch with you. And we聽really wanted to聽and聽I聽probably could have more than Jesse, so聽I鈥檓 throwing my聽own self under the聽bus. He聽lives far away and聽he聽would鈥檝e had to聽Uber along the聽way. I聽had plans and聽damn it聽I鈥檓 making sure I聽don鈥檛 have plans next year. (laughing)

Andrew: I聽got to聽tell you I聽got this incredible suite. It聽was giant. It聽was just fantastic and聽I聽had meetings there and聽I聽just enjoyed sleeping there because I聽like a聽good experience. And I聽said: 聯You know what, it鈥檚 great space. I鈥檓 going to聽invite people out to聽come to聽scotch.聰 I聽don鈥檛 mean to聽call you guys out on聽it. I聽want to聽actually use that as聽an聽opportunity to聽show people the聽way that I聽think about entrepreneurship and聽business in聽general. What I聽did was I聽said to聽people who were at聽the聽event: 聯If you want to聽come to聽my聽room for聽a聽scotch night, here鈥檚 my聽room number and聽here鈥檚 a聽chatbot that you can subscribe to, that will update you and聽let you come into the聽room.聰 And people did come in. I聽specifically had instructions cause these suites when you get to聽a聽certain floor, they don鈥檛 just let anyone come up聽you have to聽have a聽key. I聽told the聽people downstairs: 聯Anyone who mentions my聽name, I聽want you to聽give them a聽key and聽make sure that they have a聽comfortable time coming upstairs.聰 Which is聽kind of聽a聽weird thing? Nobody does that. They were shocked. But there鈥檚 a聽reason behind it. Yes, I聽like Scotch. Yes, I聽like people and聽I鈥檒l do聽that anytime. What I聽was trying to聽do聽is聽understand people鈥檚 problems. I聽was trying to聽get in聽their heads on聽an聽emotional level, in聽a聽way that you couldn鈥檛 get if聽you had people fill out a聽survey. I聽want to聽understand since I聽was talking about chatbots and聽we聽could talk a聽little bit about that here. Did they even understand what chatbots were? Do聽they even understand who I聽am? Did they come to聽that conference with a聽specific goal that I聽could then聽鈥 if聽I聽come back and聽speak the聽next year聽鈥 feed off? And that鈥檚 the聽way that I聽think about business. We聽want to聽understand people鈥檚 problems in聽as聽creative a聽way as聽possible. Most people try to聽put the聽creativity into what to聽make, what to聽sell. I聽think creativity needs to聽go聽into how do聽we聽get into the聽hearts of聽the聽people that we聽want to聽sell to, to聽understand the聽real problems that they have. Because if聽we聽do, then we聽can start to聽sell them something that they want and聽that they could be聽happy with. And since this is聽me聽talking about myself and聽people don鈥檛 really know me聽yet, I鈥檒l tell you and聽tie it聽into other entrepreneurs that I鈥檝e interviewed. I鈥檒l actually tell you about a聽pair of聽entrepreneurs, the聽founders of聽Airbnb. When they started out they were listening to聽Mixergy interviews. They emailed me聽and聽they pitched me聽on聽being on聽and聽at聽first, I聽said: 聯No, I鈥檓 not sure you guys are ready.聰 But they came back and聽they pitch me聽and聽they said: 聯Yes, I聽do聽want to聽be聽on聽Mixergy, we鈥檙e ready. Here鈥檚 what we鈥檝e got.聰 And one of聽the聽things that they told me聽when they got on聽and聽I鈥檓 glad that I聽had them on, obviously. They said that no聽one was using Airbnb except for聽a聽few people in聽New York. So聽they flew out to聽people in聽New York. They asked to聽stay at聽their homes and聽as聽they stayed at聽their homes, what they were looking for聽was why people were using it. What鈥檚 the聽problem they were solving. Barry Manilow was drummer, was one of聽the聽people who they met with, whose home they stayed in. The person said: 聯It鈥檚 OK聽to聽have somebody rent my聽room聰, which is聽what everybody was doing聽鈥 letting people rent rooms at聽the聽time. The drummer said: 聯Look, I鈥檓 on聽tour for聽weeks at聽a聽time, this place is聽empty. It鈥檚 weird when somebody is聽here while I鈥檓 here. But it鈥檚 not so聽weird if聽I鈥檓 not here and聽this place is聽staying empty. I聽just don鈥檛 like that I鈥檓 paying rent on聽an聽empty spot. If聽you guys could solve that for聽me, that would be聽a聽big help.聰 And so聽they obviously did and聽Airbnb now does more business renting, whole spaces, apartments, homes than they do聽renting a聽corner of聽a聽person鈥檚 home or聽a聽bedroom. They found lots of聽things like that. A聽lot of聽people didn鈥檛 like the聽small images that they had on聽Airbnb鈥檚 web page. It聽was too tough to聽get a聽sense of聽where they were staying when they saw small images. They understood the聽pain and聽they improved the聽images by聽not just taking bigger pictures or聽asking for聽bigger pictures but going out with their cameras and聽taking bigger pictures of聽the聽location. So聽what does this mean for聽an聽e-commerce store? It鈥檚 really hard to聽come up聽with where鈥檚 the聽better factory, what is聽a聽better product, what鈥檚 the聽better language. We聽could forever think about what鈥檚 a聽nicer this or聽that. I聽think it鈥檚 much more powerful to聽say what is聽our customer going through. What鈥檚 the聽big pain point that we鈥檙e solving for聽them. If聽we聽can tap into that, then we聽create more meaning for聽them, easier sale to聽them. We聽could feel prouder of聽what we鈥檙e doing. And the聽question is聽how do聽we聽do聽that?

Richard: It鈥檚 funny, you actually stay consistent because if聽I聽remember right I聽was looking at聽your Twitter profile and聽your location. It聽says 聯Your heart.聰 That鈥檚 actually where you鈥檙e headed to聽get it. So聽staying consistent all the聽way through. I聽love it.

Andrew: I聽got to聽say part of聽that is聽that my聽wife loves to聽travel and聽so聽do聽I.聽And it鈥檚 really hard to聽pin this down. And so聽especially when I聽wrote that down, we聽were traveling a聽whole lot. And one of聽my聽goals this year is聽to聽run a聽marathon on聽every continent. And as聽I聽go聽to聽meet entrepreneurs on聽every continent. Seven marathons on聽my聽own largely, seven continents in聽one year. And so聽yeah, it鈥檚 really hard to聽say I鈥檓 in聽San Francisco where I聽live.

Richard: Be聽updating it聽all the聽time. Sticking with the聽Twitter profile for聽a聽second, what鈥檚 the聽punch all about?

Andrew: Oh, the聽punch. Yeah. On聽my聽photo, there鈥檚 a聽punch and聽if聽you look a聽little carefully on聽the聽punch, you鈥檒l see that there鈥檚 a聽bead that I鈥檓 putting, there鈥檚 like a聽bracelet with beads on聽it. What I聽noticed is聽that there are a聽lot of聽people listening to聽my聽interviews and聽getting things out of聽it. They were actually learning. I聽told you about the聽Airbnb, there are so聽many other people. The founder of聽Tuft &聽Needle too, I聽think a聽hundred seventy million dollars a聽year now selling mattresses online, who was a聽pioneer of聽a聽bootstrapped company. He鈥檚 listening to聽Mixergy interviews, an聽early customer of聽mine and聽he聽learned a聽lot. But there are a聽lot of聽people who are learning and聽not doing anything and聽I鈥檓 sure you found that with your podcast. People who are listening, who may be聽a聽week, a聽year or聽whatever from now will say: 聯I聽didn鈥檛 really get much, I聽don鈥檛 know that these guys are actually that helpful聰. The truth is聽that it鈥檚 often not what you鈥檙e learning. It鈥檚 often not what other people are putting out there. It鈥檚 the聽hesitation that we聽all have internally. I聽call it聽the聽counter mind. Everything that I聽want to聽do, there鈥檚 a聽part of聽my聽head because what if聽it聽fails, what if聽it鈥檚 going to聽be聽too much trouble. What if聽it聽doesn鈥檛 work out, what if聽you embarrass yourself. And so聽an聽easy example is聽I鈥檓 going to聽run a聽marathon on聽every continent. Before I聽told people that was my聽goal, there was a聽little voice in聽my聽head that said: 聯Maybe you won鈥檛 finish it聽if聽you won鈥檛 be聽able to聽do聽it. Maybe this isn鈥檛 the聽year for聽you.聰 And so聽that counter mind is聽what stops entrepreneurs. Now if聽you had a聽job, if聽this was you working for聽a聽boss, you鈥檇 have no聽room for聽counter mind. You鈥檇 say: 聯Well, maybe I聽shouldn鈥檛 actually post this new thing. Maybe I聽shouldn鈥檛 tweet out, maybe I聽shouldn鈥檛 Instagram this photo of聽what I鈥檓 selling and聽show people what I鈥檓 selling.聰 And the聽boss would say: 聯You have to聽do聽it.聰 And you go: 聯All right, I聽have to聽do聽it. It鈥檚 on聽him, it鈥檚 now her issue. It鈥檚 their problem. It鈥檚 not me.聰 But in聽reality when you鈥檙e an聽entrepreneur that voice is聽there and聽that鈥檚 what crushes you. And so聽the聽punch is聽to聽punch that inner critic what I聽call the聽counter mind. Punch it, punch it聽in聽the聽face and聽when I聽say that to聽some people they go: 聯Oh, punch it?聰 because they see it聽as聽such a聽real thing, they almost humanize it. I鈥檓 obviously telling you to聽punch a聽concept, there鈥檚 no聽violence happening here but I聽do聽want you to聽punch that inner critic to聽understand that counter mind is聽just there to聽counter you. And the聽beads on聽the聽end of聽it聽are what I鈥檝e discovered is聽that that little voice that is聽actually supportive that tells me: 聯Yeah, you do聽want to聽do聽this. Yeah, you鈥檙e ready to聽fail and聽who cares if聽people see your Instagram photo of聽the聽thing that you鈥檙e selling.聰 They don鈥檛 want to聽buy or聽if聽people see that you鈥檙e selling this thing, you鈥檙e promoting it聽to聽your friends that you鈥檝e got this store and聽they don鈥檛 want to聽go聽on聽and聽buy. The little voice that says: 聯Who cares? I聽like to聽experiment.聰 I鈥檓 the聽type of聽person who wants to聽try and聽do聽things that doesn鈥檛 get much action. I聽call that the聽true mind. That鈥檚 the聽part of聽you that knows what is聽truly useful and聽wanted in聽your life. And we聽don鈥檛 give it聽enough a聽voice. And what I聽want to聽do聽is聽use the聽beads to聽find one true mind thought. Something like I聽am聽willing to聽take risks and聽make sure that I聽use my聽beads to聽stay focused on. I鈥檒l say I聽am聽willing to聽take risks and聽I聽move a聽bead on聽my聽bracelet. People don鈥檛 see it聽but I鈥檒l say it. I聽am聽willing to聽take a聽risk and聽move it聽and聽remind myself: I聽am聽the聽type of聽person who鈥檚 willing to聽take risks. And I聽think for聽anyone e-commerce people specifically you鈥檙e putting stuff out there, you鈥檙e asking people to聽buy. There鈥檚 a聽line from a聽movie 聯Barbarians at聽the聽Gate聰, where the聽salesman who ends up聽running RJR Nabisco says: 聯Hell, Charlie. People buy you when they buy what you鈥檙e selling聰. He鈥檚 a聽salesman all his life and聽he聽knows people buy you when they buy what you鈥檙e selling. When they don鈥檛 buy you, they鈥檙e almost rejecting you. And so聽that inner critic comes up聽a聽lot more that inner critic that says: 聯what if?聰 They don鈥檛 like this means they don鈥檛 like me. 聯What if聽I鈥檓 not technical enough to聽put this out there?聰 That means 聯I聽am聽not technical enough and聽who am聽I聽to聽own a聽store.聰 That鈥檚 what we聽have to聽punch in聽the聽face. We聽have to聽instead focus on聽the聽part that鈥檚 truly useful and聽wanted what I聽call the聽true mind.

Richard: I聽wouldn鈥檛 be聽surprised if聽you thought about that during your scotch night thing too. There probably were people who were sitting there going: 聯I聽can鈥檛 go聽up聽there and聽talk to聽him, I聽don鈥檛 even have a聽beer. Is聽he聽going to聽tear me聽apart, is聽he聽going to聽laugh at聽me聽because I聽don鈥檛 have a聽business yet?聰

Andrew: I鈥檓 sure that happened. I聽didn鈥檛 think of聽it聽but you鈥檙e absolutely right. I聽know it聽happened because it聽used to聽happen to聽me. I聽would be聽too embarrassed to聽go聽to聽an聽event. I聽used to聽be.

Jesse: Yeah, that鈥檚 really good. Good advice on聽getting over that hump. I聽know there鈥檚 a聽lot of聽people that鈥︹漺antrepreneur鈥 is聽a聽word for聽that reason, people want to聽be聽an聽entrepreneur. Really. They don鈥檛 really want it聽because if聽you really wanted it, you would get over that hump, you鈥檇 move the聽beads, get your true self out there. So聽that鈥檚 awesome.

Richard: What about a聽lower level feet on聽the聽ground daily tactical? There are so聽many things, there are so聽many opportunities. You鈥檝e built businesses in聽multiple categories. How does someone focus and聽what should someone be聽focusing on聽these days? Because obviously, we聽have a聽lot of聽different kinds of聽entrepreneurs. But the聽universal thing they all have in聽common is聽they鈥檙e at聽least at聽some point in聽time selling something online.

Andrew: I聽think we聽need to聽think about online a聽little bit less and聽talk to聽people a聽little bit more. Especially, when you鈥檙e starting to聽understand at聽some point the聽company gets so聽big that it鈥檚 hard to聽talk to聽customers. But you know what, when you鈥檙e getting started, pick up聽the聽phone, call every single customer who buys just to聽say: 聯Hi, I鈥檓 Andrew. You just bought from me. I聽want to聽thank you for聽buying. By聽the聽way, why did you buy what? How are you using this?聰 Get that little bit of聽insight. Even if聽it聽doesn鈥檛 teach you anything about them. it鈥檒l make them feel more connected to聽your business. Now I聽say this is聽somebody who鈥 I聽have to聽say I聽worked out of聽doing it聽when people first bought from me聽on聽Mixergy. I聽was such a聽wuss that I聽didn鈥檛 contact them at聽all, I聽was embarrassed. 聯What if聽they didn鈥檛 like the聽product?聰 I聽remember this incredible venture capitalist heard that I聽was selling something for聽five hundred dollars. He聽bought it. And in聽my聽head, I聽thought: 聯Well, he鈥檚 gonna be聽embarrassed that he聽got that, he聽paid five hundred dollars to聽me.聰 I鈥檓 a聽little embarrassed because the聽thing isn鈥檛 right. It鈥檚 not great yet. I聽didn鈥檛 contact him, I聽never thanked him even when he聽sent me聽a聽note saying 聯I聽didn鈥檛 know you had this, I聽was glad to聽buy it.聰 I聽didn鈥檛 hit reply and聽say that. I聽understand that that inner critic at聽that counter mind is聽that dangerous. But I聽have to聽tell you the聽times and聽I聽overcome it, it鈥檚 worth it. It鈥檚 absolutely powerful. I聽just did a聽few minutes ago before you and聽I聽got started, there were two customers and聽I聽wanted to聽talk to聽the聽first, just bought after I聽know she was on聽the聽fence. I聽wanted to聽thank her and聽find out why she was on聽the聽fence and聽how she wanted to聽use it. I聽couldn鈥檛 reach her. She was in聽the聽UK聽but she saw that I聽called and聽left a聽message. She emailed me聽right away to聽say: 聯I聽cannot believe that you would do聽this for聽me.聰 And the聽second one was someone who bought something from me聽and聽hadn鈥檛 used it聽because he聽is聽dealing with his own internal issues. I聽believe this is聽just made me聽say it, he聽hadn鈥檛 said it聽out loud. So聽what I聽said to聽him was 聯I聽noticed that you鈥檙e talking about working on聽this using what I鈥檓 telling you about chatbots with a聽new client. What鈥檚 your next step?聰 And he聽told me聽it鈥檚 easy to聽tell someone. I聽said go聽do聽it. I鈥檒l talk to聽you in聽45聽minutes. The reason I聽couldn鈥檛 start doing a聽mike check with you before this started was that he聽and聽I聽were scheduled to聽do聽a聽follow-up call. I聽talked to聽him earlier today. I聽said: 聯Let鈥檚 talk in聽45聽minutes聰 and聽we聽got on聽45聽minutes. And he聽had a聽little bit done and聽I聽said: 聯OK, now let鈥檚 talk again tomorrow聰 and聽so聽tomorrow morning at聽10:00聽we鈥檙e going to聽talk. I聽talking to聽him, through that I聽understand his problem a聽little bit more. He鈥檚 not ready to聽tell me聽whether it鈥檚 a聽counter mind issue or聽some other issue. We鈥檒l find out after a聽couple of聽calls. And I聽think that鈥檚 really important. We聽think online sales is聽gonna do聽everything and聽eventually, we聽do聽want to聽get to聽a聽point where we鈥檙e as聽big as聽possible and聽people are just buying from us. I聽want that, believe me, I鈥檓 not looking to聽be聽smalltime but those little touches like talking customers helps.

Jesse: Yeah, I聽think that helps. I鈥檓 a聽PPC guy at聽heart so聽sometimes I聽jump ahead to聽what鈥檚 the聽perfect ad聽to聽get people to聽buy my聽stuff. But if聽I聽don鈥檛 understand what they really want or聽what they鈥檙e really trying to聽achieve, it鈥檚 really hard for聽me聽to聽write those perfect ads to聽get people to聽buy. That鈥檚 good.

Richard: We鈥檝e mentioned a聽little bit about growing, not starting with, worrying about things being perfect all the聽time, really listening to聽your customer. What did you learn about people when you had those conversations that scotch night? Just a聽little bit of聽insight because I聽want to聽get into. I聽know chatbots is聽one of聽the聽things that you鈥檙e really into and聽we聽highly believe that could be聽a聽way to聽help these solopreneurs get that same insight. Maybe might not be聽the聽best use of聽the聽word but we鈥檒l to聽say at聽scale but then they can make it聽be聽an聽individual conversation too. What did you learn and聽kind of聽segway into the聽world of聽chatbots and聽what you鈥檙e doing there?

Andrew: I鈥檒l tell you one thing that I聽learned. I聽learned a聽bunch but I鈥檒l give you one thing that took me聽a聽long time to聽learn but I聽kept hearing it聽over and聽over again. I聽think I聽said that the聽first guy to聽buy for聽me聽the聽five dollar product. He聽said: 聯I聽wanted to聽support you聰 and聽I聽was a聽little embarrassed. I聽got my聽stuff so聽bad that he鈥檚 just doing it聽because he聽wants to聽support me. I聽had to聽talk to聽a聽lot of聽customers to聽understand that in聽many ways what they鈥檙e doing is聽making a聽decision to聽support a聽creator with their money. And to聽me, that used to聽be聽an聽insult. They must not like my聽product enough that they just want to聽support me聽if聽my聽product was good, they wouldn鈥檛 feel sorry for聽me聽and聽want to聽support me. And then I聽realized something. Make those decisions all the聽time, all the聽time. There is聽a聽grocery store in聽Novi Valley that charges more than Amazon delivery for聽grocery. I聽do聽it聽because I聽just feel good supporting them. And there鈥檚 a聽part of聽my聽head that goes: 聯Oh come on聽Andrew, what kind of聽a聽wuss are you that you can鈥檛 just deal with this like it鈥檚 a聽business transaction. Stop being it鈥檚 just a聽little bit extra and聽it鈥檚 worth it.聰 And the聽support is聽actually really useful that one time when we聽got locked out of聽our house and聽I聽had a聽baby, a聽2-year-old kid and聽I聽was able to聽go聽into that store and聽just hang out with them in聽there and聽use their phone until my聽wife was able to聽come and聽unlock the聽door so聽we聽can go聽in. There鈥檚 a聽lot to聽that. There鈥檚 a聽lot to聽that. And so聽what that taught me聽was to聽be聽OK聽that people are supportive and聽to聽make sure that I聽give them enough to聽connect with me聽that they want to聽support me. And I聽think other store owners might see the聽same thing in聽that people aren鈥檛 just buying what鈥檚 on聽your site, they鈥檙e buying who you are and聽it鈥檚 okay to聽put a聽little bit of聽who you are out there. It鈥檚 OK聽to聽say more about yourself and聽this is聽a聽trend that I聽see naturally happening on聽the聽Internet and聽I聽think we聽need to聽take it聽even further. Especially for聽smaller businesses. This is聽not a聽store. This is聽an聽individual selling something way better, way better approach.

Richard: Yet the聽fact that you鈥檙e bringing that up聽I聽don鈥檛 have the聽hard stats on聽it聽because I聽didn鈥檛 know we聽were going to聽go聽this direction. But Kickstarter is聽built on聽that right. This is聽just like these creators that are trying to聽get something done and聽the聽ones that actually got it聽done, it聽wasn鈥檛 that product actually got delivered I鈥檇 imagine. Maybe it鈥檚 better now but in聽the聽early days, there鈥檚 a聽lot of聽those products that actually didn鈥檛 even really get delivered. But they believed in聽the聽person now granted we聽hope they deliver the聽product.

Andrew: I鈥檒l take it聽even one step, no, a聽lot of聽steps higher. The New York Times if聽you listen to聽the聽daily podcast, it鈥檚 one of聽the聽most popular podcasts in聽the聽App Store. What they do聽is聽they just break down a聽news story for聽the聽day. 30聽minutes or聽so. They鈥檝e got ads, they鈥檙e a聽big business but if聽you see when they sell a聽subscription to聽The New York Times, they don鈥檛 say: 聯We鈥檝e got more news.聰 They don鈥檛 say: 聯We have this number of聽bureaus around the聽world.聰 They don鈥檛 say if聽you subscribe to聽the聽newspaper, you鈥檙e gonna get 20聽new articles every year. They don鈥檛 do聽any聽of聽that. They don鈥檛 say: 聯You鈥檙e gonna be聽smart聰 or聽anything. What they say is聽聯We鈥檙e the聽people who make the聽news. Hi, my聽name is聽Theo Belkin or聽whoever.聰 Who knew that they were the聽creators behind the聽New York Times anything, they are introducing themselves by聽name. They鈥檙e saying what they do聽they say: 聯Here鈥檚 how hard I聽work to聽create that piece that you heard a聽few weeks ago. And the聽reason I鈥檓 able to聽do聽it聽is聽because The New York Times subscribers are buying the聽subscription. If聽you want to聽support our work, if聽you want to聽support me聽what you do聽is聽you buy, you subscribe to聽the聽newspaper.聰 If聽they鈥檙e doing it聽on聽that level we聽have to聽take that to聽heart. And I聽think it聽helps to聽go聽onto our websites and聽say: 聯Look here鈥檚 what I鈥檓 doing, here鈥檚 how I鈥檓 putting my聽product together. Here鈥檚 how I聽screwed up.聰 I聽actually think people connect more with screw-ups than they do聽with the聽stuff that鈥檚 working well. I聽would emphasize some of聽the聽screw-ups a聽little bit to聽show that and聽give people something to聽latch onto and聽a聽reason to聽root for聽you. Hundred percent.

Jesse: Yeah, people that are listening. If聽you鈥檙e a聽store owner listening, how can you apply that? It鈥檚 not about your products, of聽course, they鈥檙e buying your products. But look at聽here 聯About us聰 section. Look at聽it. Do聽you have a聽picture of聽yourself? Do聽you tell people why you鈥檙e selling this stuff? It鈥檚 not just because I聽drop this stuff from China and聽I聽hope to聽make it聽make a聽buck. I聽hope that鈥檚 not your story, that鈥檚 going to聽be聽a聽good one. But I聽tell the聽reason why you鈥檙e selling stuff or聽make a聽video post a聽video. It鈥檚 not that hard to聽do. I聽love that.

Andrew: Put it聽out there and聽as聽soon as聽you say it, people鈥檚 counter minds are going off and聽saying: 聯I聽don鈥檛 know, people see me聽that, maybe my聽family members will know, maybe my聽co-workers will know, maybe my聽friend from high school will see this. See that I鈥檓 kind of聽struggling with this or聽who knows or聽maybe and聽will see it聽and聽think that the聽site is聽not polished enough.聰 Yeah, that鈥檚 where you have to聽really punch that counter mind in聽the聽face and聽focus on聽what you want which is聽to聽experiment to聽put yourself out there a聽little bit so聽that people care about your products and聽they will want to聽buy them and聽then also want to聽support your store. And if聽there is聽a聽problem they鈥檒l want to聽help out and聽fix it. God knows that happened for聽me聽on聽my聽site, on聽Mixergy.

Richard: So聽what got you into bots?

Andrew: Here鈥檚 what happened. I鈥檓 glad you asked about chatbots. What happened to聽me聽was I聽couldn鈥檛 get my聽email open rates any聽higher or聽my聽click rates on聽email any聽higher. There was a聽period there where email was huge. I聽actually built a聽35+ million dollar business. Nothing but email marketing people would subscribe to聽my聽email newsletters. I鈥檇 send them the聽regular messages, there鈥檇 be聽ads in聽there, occasionally I鈥檇 sell something directly. It聽was huge, was great, was phenomenal. I鈥檓 not anti-email even to聽this day because it鈥檚 what made me. But what I聽realized there was a聽period there where email had higher open high engagement. People were looking forward to聽it. That鈥檚 not happening anymore. And when I聽reach my聽wife like I鈥檝e done several, seven at聽least times today using iMessage on聽the聽Apple chat platform when I聽went to聽Singapore because I聽had to聽run a聽marathon in聽Asia. The people who I聽met there, I聽was using WhatsApp to聽communicate with them. That鈥檚 a聽text-based app. When I聽talk to聽my聽co-workers, I鈥檓 using Ping to聽communicate with them. Again a聽text app we鈥檙e using, chat, chat, chat. I聽tried to聽communicate with people we聽love, the聽people we聽work with and聽still when we鈥檙e selling we鈥檙e only using email. It鈥檚 almost like we鈥檙e relegating them to聽second class citizens of聽this. Now we聽communicate with you because we聽don鈥檛 care that much about you but we聽communicate with our friends the聽other way. And I聽thought what if聽it聽didn鈥檛 have to聽be聽that way. Is聽there a聽way for聽me聽to聽use chat apps people love? I聽started to聽investigate. I聽actually invested in聽a聽company that started to聽move into this space, it鈥檚 called Assist. They created the聽first sets of聽chatbots that Mark Zuckerberg introduced on聽stage when he聽said chat can actually be聽used as聽a聽platform for聽businesses. I聽learned through them and聽I聽said there needs to聽be聽a聽company that works for聽smaller businesses because Assist was charging hundreds of聽thousands. It聽was over a聽hundred thousand dollars to聽have a聽chatbot built by聽them. God bless them, I聽was investing, so聽I聽was happy that they were doing that. I聽said there needs to聽be聽someone for聽smaller businesses. And I聽found this company that was barely alive but it聽was good called Many Chat and聽what they did was they said: 聯Look, you have an聽email list, great, I鈥檓 going to聽give you a聽chat list. People can subscribe to聽your chat messages just like they subscribe to聽your email list. It聽won鈥檛 be聽a聽text because people don鈥檛 like getting text messages but almost everyone鈥檚 on聽Facebook Messenger haven鈥檛 subscribed and聽you could send the聽messages, be聽a聽Facebook Messenger.聰 I聽said: 聯I聽don鈥檛 trust you聰. So聽since I鈥檓 in聽San Francisco I聽found a聽company, I聽found someone in聽500聽startups, the聽company that invested in聽them. I聽asked that person about them and聽said: 聯Oh yeah, they鈥檙e really good company, I鈥檒l make the聽introduction.聰 I聽love them, I聽became a聽user, I聽became a聽customer. I聽said I聽have to聽teach people about this, I聽became an聽investor in聽their business. And what I聽noticed was the聽more I聽used it, the聽more excited I聽was about it. People did like to聽open up聽messages in聽Facebook Messenger. My聽open rates were higher, my聽click rate I聽could sell with it, and聽so聽I聽just kept talking about it. Kept seeing people get results, kept getting more and聽more excited about it聽and聽became this thing that overtook my聽life because I聽that not passionate about it.

Richard: I鈥檓 hearing this underlying theme of鈥 you really want to聽get to聽know people that you love. It聽sounds like micro experiments that you want to聽work and聽you want them to聽grow into big success but you鈥檙e willing to聽take these small micro experiments. And it聽makes me聽think of鈥 I聽want to聽say it聽was Reid Hoffman with the聽LinkedIn guy where he聽says if聽you鈥檙e not embarrassed with your first release you waited too long. I聽believe it聽was him, at聽least someone in聽that PayPal mafia. (laughing)

Andrew: It聽was absolutely him. Wait, no, it鈥檚鈥 Let me聽confirm it聽actually because鈥 Yeah, it聽is聽Reid Hoffman. Yes, absolutely.

Richard: It聽definitely reminds me聽of聽what you鈥檙e talking about and聽this is聽the聽beauty of聽these merchants for聽a聽low cost. They can start, don鈥檛 complain you don鈥檛 have a聽thousand customers right now. Like I聽jokingly say sometimes. Back to聽a聽few good men. A聽thousand customers, you couldn鈥檛 handle a聽thousand guys. Start out with your first one and聽get to聽know them like scotch night and聽feel their pain, know what they鈥檙e really looking at. You moved into chatbots because you saw that鈥檚 the聽way one you could solve a聽problem you had with open rates, but in聽addition to聽it, the聽deeper element of聽it, that I鈥檓 here in聽there. When you made the聽comment about your relegating them to聽a聽second class citizen, I聽also see like 聯Oh no, the聽people you love.聰 This is聽the聽way you communicate. Once again a聽lot of聽these people are just getting started. I聽know you had bot academy going and聽then you have another project going. What鈥檚 a聽way you recommend for聽these people who go聽聯Wow, this is聽great. I鈥檓 going to聽make those phone calls and聽I鈥檓 going to聽get on, I鈥檓 going to聽try this out, I鈥檓 going to聽get to聽learn more about my聽customers and聽I聽like the聽idea boards.聰 Where should they get started?

Andrew: If聽they鈥檙e into calling their customers, the聽first thing they should do聽is聽get a聽cut when an聽order comes in. Just call the聽number and聽frankly text them too. If聽you don鈥檛 get people to聽pick up聽and聽they don鈥檛, just send them a聽text message. 聯Hey, I鈥檓 a聽store owner that you just bought from. I聽wanted to聽say thank you personally. Can I聽give you a聽ring right now?聰 or聽not can, 聯I鈥檓 going to聽call you right now. Feel free to聽send the聽voicemail if聽you don鈥檛 want to聽talk to聽me.聰 Just a聽quick message like that and聽people love it. As聽for聽chat messages, I聽think we聽should鈥 I聽think the聽store owners we鈥檙e listening to聽should recognize that they too are using chat with the聽people they love too or聽using chat with the聽people they work with. They should consider that that could be聽the聽way that they communicate with their customers. You can imagine something like somebody comes over to聽their store, they go聽to聽an聽黑料门 store that sells鈥 What鈥檚 an聽example of聽something that people sell? Can we聽say fountain pens or聽specialty鈥 you know what, specialty mechanical pencils. I聽don鈥檛 know why I鈥檓 a聽little obsessed with really good mechanical pens. Look how elegant this looks, beautiful, right? I聽don鈥檛 know why I聽care about heavy technology. And then these pencils, they had a聽mechanical pencil store. Imagine if聽I聽got in, they鈥檙e not ready right now to聽buy a聽mechanical pencil, I聽may just be聽gawking at聽it. What if聽there was an聽alert that said: 聯Hey, can I聽send you a聽15聽percent discount via Facebook Messenger?聰 There鈥檚 no聽place for聽me聽to聽type in聽my聽phone number, my聽name or聽anything, just a聽simple button as聽soon as聽I聽press it. The message is聽great. I聽just sent it聽over to聽you. Next time you buy you have 15聽percent off. So聽I聽open up聽my聽Facebook messenger because my聽phone will vibrate and聽we鈥檒l make sure that I聽open up聽the聽message just like it聽does when I聽get a聽text message from my聽wife. I聽open it聽up. I聽see 15聽percent discount say: 聯By the聽way, can we聽tell you tomorrow about how to聽look for聽the聽right mechanical pencil? The differences in聽tips will make a聽difference in聽how you write聰. Yeah, of聽course, the聽next day it聽comes in聽with a聽little tip about what I聽should look for聽in聽a聽mechanical pencil. Now a聽guy who really geeks out on聽them like me聽will enjoy that. And the聽next day if聽they say there鈥檚 a聽history of聽mechanical pencils. 聯Can I聽show you one of聽the聽oldest mechanical pencils that we聽know about?聰 I聽thought this was something that鈥檚 kind of聽new. But let鈥檚 see it聽and聽I聽get to聽see it聽and聽be聽involved in聽the聽world. They鈥檙e not selling me. They鈥檙e just teaching me聽a聽little bit. I鈥檒l tell you what, when it鈥檚 time for聽me聽to聽buy a聽mechanical pencil, now these people have taught me聽something. The attacks didn鈥檛 get buried in聽my聽email inbox with thousands of聽other messages. People who taught me, the聽Facebook Messenger who I聽keep going in聽reading. Another tip about the聽history of聽pencils or聽the聽things I聽should look for聽in聽the聽next mechanical pencil that I鈥檓 looking for. Next time I聽want to聽buy one, I鈥檓 more likely to聽go聽buy from them, especially since I聽have a聽15聽percent discount. Or聽imagine if聽they forwarded me聽before Father鈥檚 Day, it鈥檚 about to聽be聽Father鈥檚 Day, or聽before Christmas is聽about to聽be聽Christmas a聽message. It聽says: 聯Hey, Andrew why don鈥檛 you ask the聽people in聽your life to聽send you a聽mechanical pencil that you love instead of聽a聽random present that you don鈥檛 care about.聰 And they make that easy. And it聽all happens at聽Facebook Messenger. All I鈥檇 have to聽do聽is聽press one button to聽give them permission and聽now they keep that going. So聽you mentioned I聽do聽have two different businesses involved in聽this. Absolutely. At聽Bot Academy I鈥檝e been training people to聽do聽this for聽two almost three years now, teaching, teaching, teaching. What I鈥檝e found is聽that many people like it. And if聽you like to聽learn, you can go聽see at聽BotAcademy.com. But there are some people say: 聯I聽want to聽do聽it聽myself. Can you just do聽it聽for聽me?聰 And so聽I聽teamed up聽with a聽couple of聽people, including one person who you鈥檝e interviewed here, Nick Julia. We聽created Chat Blender and聽we聽said: 聯Yeah, we鈥檒l do聽it聽for聽you, tell us聽what you need. We聽will absolutely do聽it聽for聽you. You imagine it, we聽will do聽it.聰 And so聽if聽anyone wants that, they can go聽to聽ChatBlender.com. And again, that comes from me聽talking to聽people who are signing up聽to聽learn from me, who want to聽find out how to聽build a聽bot by聽going at聽Bot Academy. And as聽I聽talk to聽them, they鈥檙e saying: 聯Well, I鈥檓 running a聽business. I聽don鈥檛 have time to聽learn this. I聽have other things on聽my聽mind. Do聽it聽for聽me.聰 Yeah. I鈥檒l do聽it.

Richard: When we聽went there, I聽loved it. I聽wanted to聽wait till after the聽show to聽do聽it聽just because I聽wanted to聽be聽organic. But I聽loved how the聽only way you can actually communicate with you via going into the聽chat. I鈥檓 right that anytime I聽hovered over anything it聽was like No聽you鈥檙e pretty much if聽you want to聽move forward with this. You鈥檝e been sold on聽and聽already you鈥檙e gonna have to聽test it聽out. Do聽you know what my聽partners in聽the聽business Nick Julia who you know and聽Steven Brady?
They also wanted to聽manage the聽whole client relationship within the聽chapel. They said look people shouldn鈥檛 have to聽use new software. What if聽they just message us聽and聽Facebook Messenger and聽say hey I聽need this built on聽my聽site. And we聽take over and聽do聽it. Just message it. We聽want them, like you said, to聽fully experience what a聽chat experience is聽like.

Jesse: Yeah, I聽love it. It鈥檚 owning chat basically. There is聽no聽extra flow. You鈥檙e trying to聽set up聽a聽chatbot, chat with me, figure it聽out.

Richard: I聽think this is聽where you were going next. But like do聽you actually, so聽say someone wants to聽do聽this, there鈥檚 an聽黑料门 user that says: 聯Wow, I鈥檓 into it, let鈥檚 do聽it.聰 And they go, do聽they actually have to聽know about? How like the聽questions to聽even ask you? Do聽you take them through a聽flow that helps them decide that?

Andrew: We聽show it聽to聽them. They feel it聽immediately and聽if聽they feel it聽and聽they say, this is聽what I聽want for聽my聽business, we聽created for聽them, we聽let them feel it聽first. And by聽feeling it, I聽mean if聽like you said, they go聽to聽a聽chatbot or聽the聽only interaction is聽press this, try the聽chatbot. Do聽you want this for聽your site? Great. Contact us. We鈥檒l build it聽for聽you.

Jesse: Hmm. Great. That was something that was a聽thought I聽had when I聽was looking at聽this like, okay, great. I聽have a聽side hustle that I聽wanted really do聽chatbots for. I鈥檝e tried a聽little bit, but I聽don鈥檛 really know what I聽want to聽do. I聽just want chatbots to聽work for聽me. If聽I聽have to聽give you guys every step, I聽probably could鈥檝e done that myself, but I聽liked the聽idea of聽you just tell me聽yes, I聽want to聽do聽it聽and聽we鈥檒l walk you through that process. So聽love it.

Andrew: By聽the聽way, this is聽kind of聽a聽new name. What do聽you think of聽the聽name Chat Blender? It聽feels good to聽me, but we聽created the聽name, it鈥檚 Chat Blender. Does it聽make sense to聽you? Does it聽work?

Richard: Cool. I聽like it. Especially it聽fits in聽with what you鈥檙e trying to聽do. It聽sounds like you鈥檙e trying to聽help individuals, you鈥檙e trying to聽help engine agencies and聽you鈥檙e blending conversations. I聽think it鈥檚 great.

Jesse: I鈥檓 liking it聽more. I聽will say I聽had to聽say it聽a聽couple of聽times a聽day because I聽know of聽a聽couple of聽other companies that start with chat. I鈥檓 like Cha-, Chat Blender. There鈥檙e a聽lot of聽companies that start with the聽word chat. That鈥檚 just my聽real feedback.

Andrew: That makes a聽lot of聽sense, actually. We聽were trying to聽use a聽name that felt clear enough that you鈥檇 know what it聽was, but it聽is聽such an聽overused name. But boy, finding the聽right domain took forever. That included the聽name Chad. I鈥檓 glad that you guys approved.

Richard: One of聽the聽things we聽want to聽make sure we聽do聽too, we聽obviously talked about BotAcademy.com and聽ChatBlender.com. If聽people are interested in聽that, anything else, any聽new initiatives other than that you want people to聽look, things you want people to聽pay attention to?

Andrew: I鈥檇 love to聽hear back from people who said, I鈥檝e heard Andrew say, call my聽customer. I鈥檓 going to聽suck it聽up聽and聽I鈥檓 going to聽call my聽customer as聽soon as聽they come in. When I聽get that order, I鈥檓 going to聽find out their number and聽I鈥檓 going to聽text them and聽say, I鈥檓 calling you, thanks for聽buying. And then call them or聽just call them out of聽the聽blue and聽say thank you. I鈥檇 love to聽hear from people who do聽that and聽I鈥檓 going to聽tell you my聽email address. Guys, if聽you鈥檙e listening to聽me, you can just contact me聽at聽andrew@botacademy.com. Just say, Andrew, I聽called, here鈥檚 what happened. Even if聽it鈥檚, I聽called and聽they didn鈥檛 pick up. Even if聽I,聽I聽tried to聽call, I聽hit the聽button, I聽canceled because I聽got a聽little bit scared of聽it聽or聽felt like there wasn鈥檛 enough time. I聽want to聽hear from you. I鈥檇 like to聽see you do聽this. We聽can go聽over tips for聽improving your store all day long. I聽could give you tips for聽us. Frankly. Who am聽I聽going to聽give you tips for聽SEO? Jesse could do聽a聽better job of聽giving you tips for聽SEO, but these tips are out there. I聽wanted to聽give you just a聽small step that will feel really weird at聽first and聽phenomenal as聽you keep practicing it. Call up聽your customers. Start with the聽first one, not email, call them up, see how it聽works, let me聽know. And I聽think you鈥檙e going to聽find that you鈥檒l understand people a聽lot better. And by聽the聽way, full disclosure, my聽interest is聽doing it, is聽I聽want to聽get to聽know the聽people who take action. I聽want to聽get in聽their heads. It鈥檚 worth it聽for聽me聽to聽get to聽know their challenges that I聽know with what鈥檚 working, what鈥檚 not. It鈥檚 worth it聽for聽me聽to聽get to聽know them because anyone who鈥檚 willing to聽take that next step and聽call the聽one customer is聽somebody that I聽want to聽get to聽know. And that relationship will be聽valuable in聽the聽future. So聽absolutely, I鈥檇 love to聽see them do聽that. And there are lots of聽other ways to聽talk to聽customers, but let鈥檚 start with that.

Jesse: That鈥檚 perfect. I聽love the聽challenge for聽our listeners out there, let鈥檚 take action. Got the聽beads. We聽got the聽punch. Get over that home. I聽love it. I聽love it. Richie, any聽last questions here?

Richard: Nope. I聽just want to聽say thank you. Staying true to聽form. We聽ask something he聽could promote and聽he聽wanted to聽help people, so聽appreciate you, Andrew.

Andrew: Thank you.

Richard: True to聽form. As聽we聽always experience, every time we聽listened to聽you and聽now we聽get to聽chat with you and聽we鈥檙e actually going to聽be聽signing up聽a聽whole another story, but we鈥檙e going to聽be聽checking it聽out.

Jesse: Because we聽feel pity. (laughing)

Richard: We聽just want you to聽call us聽and聽ask me. (laughing)

Andrew: I聽will see you on聽Chat Blender then. Thanks, guys, for聽having me.

Richard: Yeah, good stuff. Thanks for聽everything. Appreciate it.

Jesse: Thanks, Andrew.
