We聽talk with Franco Varriano from RareLogic behind the聽app Rare.io that makes building automated
Transcript
Jesse: What鈥檚 going on, Richard? How are you?
Richard: Great. I鈥檓 excited again. Always, this time of聽the聽week.
Jesse: We聽are always excited to聽talk
Richard: Yeah, it鈥檚 not just because it鈥檚 Friday, since we聽record it聽on聽Friday, that鈥檚 not the聽reason, right?
Jesse: So, today we鈥檙e going to聽talk about automated
Richard: Yeah, I聽mean, you鈥檙e going to聽hear all kinds of聽people talking about got to聽be聽on聽social media and聽you got, I聽mean, you heard in聽the聽intro, we聽think you should be聽on聽Instagram too, you should be聽anywhere your customers are. But, one key thing, that鈥檚 actually聽鈥 they are your customers, but they鈥檙e on聽someone else鈥檚 platform, and聽email is聽always a聽way to聽get them back on聽your playground.
Jesse: Yeah. So, Instagram, Facebook, they鈥檙e all awesome and聽of聽course we聽encourage you do聽that, but that is聽not your playground. That is聽not your football, if聽Instagram says, you know, tomorrow, this is聽my聽ball I鈥檓 going home, you know, you鈥檙e out of聽luck. So, one way to聽prevent that is聽of聽course to聽have your own website, but even more, so聽you have to聽build your own email list, like, period. There鈥檚 no, you know, if聽you really want to聽make it聽in聽
Richard: Yeah, and聽today鈥檚 guest is聽going to聽be聽great. We鈥檝e always heard the聽traditional, you know, 聯Start a聽newsletter聰 and聽this and聽so, it鈥檚 great to聽actually hear from someone who鈥檚 built a聽software, that actually is聽built it聽around thinking
Jesse: Yes, absolutely. So, let鈥檚 bring in聽our guest, this is聽Franco Varriano, Head of聽Growth and聽Partnerships at聽Rare.io. How鈥檚 it聽going, Franco?
Franco: Going well, thanks Jesse, thanks Richard. I鈥檓 excited to聽be聽here.
Richard: And that鈥檚 Rare.io.
Jesse: Rare.io. Oh, man鈥
Franco: It鈥檚 used to聽be聽Salesforce.com thing, right. Sometimes it鈥檚 Rare, sometimes it鈥檚 Rare.io. But this is聽the聽URL people are looking for聽us.
Richard: And such team player he聽left the聽聯I聰 out.
Jesse: You know, when you work at聽a聽company called 黑料门, that鈥檚 黑料门.com everybody, just, you know, I聽understand the聽pronunciation, so聽we聽got out there. So, Franco, you know, what does Rare.io do?
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. So, I聽mean, we鈥檙e basically a聽personalized email marketing service, built specifically for聽
Jesse: That鈥檚 awesome, now, you know, for聽people that haven鈥檛, that they are, like: 聯Oh, yeah, I聽know what email is, I聽know it聽what newsletter is.聰 You know, what do聽you mean by聽automated email. What鈥檚, you know, break that down for聽somebody that鈥檚 brand new.
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. I聽mean, I鈥檓 sure we鈥檙e going obviously dive into some of聽the聽more advanced stuff, that you can do聽with that. But, basically, as聽you guys are saying in聽the聽intro, you know, having an聽email list, that鈥檚 your database of聽customers, they belong to聽you. You can reach out to聽them anytime and聽it鈥檚 way easier, way less expensive to聽convince somebody to聽buy from you again, than it聽is聽to聽try and聽acquire a聽brand new customer. So, holding on聽and聽building an聽email list is聽really gold. And, so, what we聽help merchants do聽is聽really find the聽opportunities and聽find the聽gold in聽that email list through a聽bunch of聽personalized algorithmic or聽AI聽based data segmentation, which again we聽can talk, we聽can highlight some things to聽do聽as聽beginners, but, basically, you know, once you have that email list of聽customers that belong to聽your customer database, you want to聽be聽able to聽reach out to聽them as聽frequently as聽possible. And, so, that鈥檚 where you鈥檒l do聽things, like, newsletter or聽individual campaigns for聽specific sales or聽specific milestones, sometimes tied to聽a聽calendar event, like, Halloween is聽coming up聽or聽something like that. But, automated is聽the, that鈥檚 where the聽real gold comes in, because now you鈥檙e making money in聽your sleep. Now you don鈥檛 have to聽tip something up聽specifically.
Jesse: And, Franco, so聽yeah, I聽mean, the聽first things we鈥檙e talking about there, that鈥檚, maybe what people are more familiar with, that鈥檚 newsletter鈥檚 and聽that requires you to, you have to聽get creative and聽find, yeah, 聯it鈥檚 Halloween, I鈥檓 going to聽do聽a聽Halloween sale.聰 But what you鈥檙e talking about now with automation is聽a聽little more next level. So, what would be聽some examples of聽that?
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. So, I聽mean, there鈥檚 common places to聽start and聽Rare does a聽good job of聽making it聽easy for聽黑料门
Jesse: That鈥檚 perfect. I聽mean, that鈥檚 the聽whole dream of聽
Richard: Yeah, Jesse is聽just start using it, right. He聽makes money on聽his
Jesse: Yeah, automation, that鈥檚 then you don鈥檛 have to聽get, you don鈥檛 have to聽be聽as聽creative every single month through, every time you need some money, so. So, an聽example of聽automation be, like, OK, you mention when people sign up聽for聽your newsletter or聽maybe, you know, when they place a聽sale, is聽that, like, a聽such of聽the聽triggers before the聽automation to聽kick in?
Franco: Correct. Yeah, I聽mean, so, there鈥檚 a聽bunch of聽common ones things, like signing up聽for聽newsletter, buying a聽new product, looking at, you know, the聽website, maybe add some things into the聽card and聽not completing the聽order. So, there鈥檚 a聽bunch of聽common trigger points where, you know, to聽go聽from sort of聽amateur to聽new to聽intermediate to聽expert, you want to聽deliver a聽better service in聽front of聽mind to聽your customers and聽just try to聽make sure that you鈥檙e helping them cut through the聽noise and聽see that there鈥檚 a聽special offer available to聽them right in聽that moment and聽capitalize on聽that intent to聽buy, or聽to聽browse, or聽even reward them, you know, they placed a聽certain amount of聽orders and聽you鈥檙e looking to聽do聽a聽loyalty campaign. It鈥檚 always nice to聽let people know that you appreciate them and, kind of聽like we聽said just a聽few moments ago, it鈥檚 easier to聽convince somebody who has an聽established relationship buying from you. They know that your products are legit. They like the聽quality, they like the聽customer support, they like how fast it聽gets to聽them. It鈥檚 way easier to聽convince them to聽come back and聽continue to聽buy from you, than it聽is聽to聽say, you know: 聯Hey stranger, I鈥檝e got something that you want to聽buy, here it聽is.聰 You know, right, it聽does not have that relationship there. So, that鈥檚 where automated emails can come into play. An聽automated, you know, may carry a聽bit of聽a聽negative connotation, like, it鈥檚 not personalized, but that鈥檚 where Rare comes in聽a聽way to聽help make those deals that go聽out feel very real, and聽look very real, and聽be聽very specific versus, you know, that traditional newsletter that where you鈥檙e blasting your entire email list: 聯Hey, come take 10% off, you know, and聽shop.聰 That鈥檚 not super personal, if聽everybody is聽getting the聽same offer on聽the聽same product. That鈥檚 not really interesting.
Richard: And so, it鈥檚 kind of, we聽won鈥檛 go聽too deep, because again to聽get a聽little bit complicated, but just as聽as聽
Franco: Not, it鈥檚 a聽bit of聽both, I聽guess. So, I聽mean, so, Rare as聽a聽product we鈥檝e got lots of聽starter templates ready to聽go聽for聽you to聽apply to聽your store. We鈥檝e got the聽most common formulas or聽trigger points set up聽for聽things, like, welcome emails or聽abandoned carts, you don鈥檛 have to聽try to聽imagine where should this fit into my聽business. We鈥檝e already identified the聽most common and聽most critical areas for聽you to聽free to聽just set up聽an聽email for, so, that鈥檚 all in聽the聽software, when you sign up聽and聽go聽ahead and聽create it.
Jesse: Yeah, I聽love that, especially for聽newbies, where they might, if聽you鈥檙e listening this podcast and聽saying: 聯Yeah. All right, automation, I鈥檓 going to聽do聽it.聰 And then, that鈥檚 all you have, you know, that鈥檚 hard.
Richard: So, basically they would just go聽into their vernacular, their vernacular then, right. So, you got your templates over jumping in聽there, but again getting excited. So, you got the聽templates, it鈥檚 pretty much there. Here鈥檚 the聽80聽percent of聽what you鈥檙e going to聽need and聽now you put in聽your 20聽percent that makes it聽unique to聽your customers, your vernacular, your site, your product.
Franco: Exactly, correct, yes. So, I聽mean, the聽cool thing about it, and聽I鈥檓 sure we鈥檙e going to聽get to聽this maybe a聽bit, so, hopefully, I鈥檓 not jumping the聽gun, but, you know, when you鈥檙e thinking about email marketing a聽lot of聽other names might jump out like Mailchimp or聽a聽constant contact or聽something like that. And that鈥檚 great, because you鈥檙e coming from a聽perspective of: 聯I鈥檝e got an聽email list or聽a聽database of聽customers and聽I聽want to聽get some news out to聽them.聰 And traditionally the聽best way of聽doing that was just a聽newsletter which sort of, you know, most of聽the聽time just recaps company news or聽blog posts, but it鈥檚 not really commerce focused. And so, you know, for聽a聽long time, if聽you鈥檙e using that kind of聽software that kind of聽tool, you鈥檙e then trying to聽figure out, like: 聯OK, well, how can I聽quickly pull, you know, my聽product picture and聽now I聽need the聽description and聽I聽need how many reviews there or聽I聽need the聽price.聰 And what happens if聽somebody buys that, how does that integrate with, you know, 黑料门 in聽terms of聽lowering my聽inventory count. Well, with Rare that was built specifically for聽
Jesse: So, it聽also sounds as, if聽even though you have a聽lot of聽feature sets that could almost go聽enterprise or聽could go聽to聽enterprise level, that a聽beginner could come in, utilize your software and, you know, will direct them exactly where Rare.io later and聽they can look at聽the聽price and聽all the聽different stuff. But it聽looks from what I聽can see here, like, they get started right away and聽literally take the聽place of聽Mailchimp right now, and聽then may be聽or聽may not use all those feature sets, but they鈥檙e not going to聽have to聽move into a聽whole new software and聽learn a聽new way of聽working with that they could just grow as聽their business grows.
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. I聽mean, that鈥檚 the聽goal is聽to, you know, kind of聽as聽we鈥檝e mentioned is, as聽you build that email list, which is聽your gold, or聽your customer database and聽you almost customers, you want to聽be聽able to聽continue to聽get the聽most out of聽that list as聽possible and聽make smarter product recommendations each time and聽maintain that relationship with each individual customer at聽once, so聽that鈥檚 where some of聽our AI聽and聽all the聽stuff that we聽do聽behind the聽scenes that we鈥檒l get into in聽terms of聽smart timing and聽smart product recommendations. To聽y聽make sure that each email that we聽send is聽not something that you have to聽sit down and聽think, you know, hours about, like: 聯Hey, you know, Richard bought this last time, so聽I鈥檇 better make sure that this time that I鈥檓 reaching out to聽him I鈥檓 going to聽do聽this.聰 It聽just allows you to聽do聽it, you know, at聽scale in聽an聽automatic way.
Jesse: Yes. I聽mean, Jesse here with a聽question on. So, let鈥檚 say someone has a聽store, you know, they sell bikes and聽they also sell apparel, right. So, maybe, somebody that buys a聽bike might be聽interested in聽several things and聽buy parts and聽such, but somebody that bought apparel, maybe they鈥檙e just going to聽stick with apparel. Does your software give somebody the聽ability where: 聯OK, they bought a聽bike. Let鈥檚 say in聽a聽month or聽so聽we鈥檙e going to聽give them, you know, offers on聽bike tires and聽things like that.聰 Is聽that kind of聽what we鈥檙e talking about?
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. So, I聽mean, all those kind of聽settings are configurable and聽it聽really depends on聽the聽merchants and聽what they need and聽how many products that they have in聽their store and聽that kind of聽situation, but in聽the聽context you described, yeah exactly. If聽somebody comes in聽and聽buys a聽bike it聽doesn鈥檛 make sense, you know, for聽fifteen hundred bucks or聽whatever, it聽doesn鈥檛 make sense to聽keep recommending bikes every time is聽there an聽email. Obviously, they need more stuff and聽there鈥檚 only so聽many bikes you can buy in聽a聽year, unless you鈥檙e really making bad choices, but, you know, you totally will need you know helmet gloves, you know, the聽racing jersey, maybe some footwear, maybe need some new pedals, maybe need a聽water bottle. So, those kind of聽related products or聽other smart things, you know, if聽somebody seems to聽be聽buying from one specific brand collection for聽example, look I鈥檓 not an聽avid cyclist, so聽I鈥檓 not sure. But, you know, I鈥檇 imagine that, you know, a聽manufacturer of聽clothing supplies and聽accessories, you know, if聽you tend to聽be聽a聽fan of聽them and聽you tend to聽be聽buying those products, it聽doesn鈥檛 make sense to聽show you products from a聽brand, you know, brand B聽that you might not like as聽much as聽brand A.聽So, as聽the聽system sees that, you know: 聯Hey, this customer in聽particular on聽your customer list on聽your email list tends to聽be聽buying, you know, brand A.聽Well, let鈥檚 show them more brand A聽stuff.聰 And, if, you know, somebody tends to聽be聽buyer across the聽board then they get a聽little bit of聽everything, but people tend to聽have favorites and聽things that they look for, right, I聽mean, the聽funny part about
Jesse: Yeah that鈥檚 super cool, because as聽a聽merchant, you might have a聽hunch on聽a聽couple of聽these things, but first you have to聽actually have the聽right hunch and聽then you have to聽set up聽all these different emails that say 聯if person X聽buys product Y,聽then send email Z聰聽and, you know, my聽head is聽already exploding on聽this. So, I聽mean, I聽think that鈥檚 awesome, that this software can basically has this AI聽in聽there they can just start figuring that out for聽you.
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. I聽mean, it聽doesn鈥檛 have to聽be聽that complicated, but I聽mean you can end up聽seeing, you know, if聽you were to聽try and聽keep track of聽this stuff manually, you know, you almost end up聽with like a聽football playbook with all kinds of聽different things happening. But, I聽mean, if聽your business isn鈥檛 simple was: 聯Hey, this is聽a聽monthly subscription box and, you know, you just need to聽renew every quarter, provide your feedback or, you know, there鈥檚 a聽few products upset here and聽there,聰 it聽can easily handle that, just as聽well as聽it聽will handle something super complicated, where, you know, you may be聽shipping a聽bunch of聽different cycling parts and聽accessories internationally to聽a聽bunch of聽different time zones and聽a聽bunch different currencies. So, Rare definitely is聽able to聽help scale that through and聽throughout those different samples.
Jesse: Yeah, that鈥檚 perfect, especially for聽people that, you know, are getting a聽basic idea of聽what we鈥檙e talking about, but say: 聯Man, I聽really don鈥檛 want to聽set that up, I聽really just want to聽push the聽easy button on聽this and聽have email start making money for聽me.聰 So聽this is聽AI聽and聽AI聽needs data in聽order to聽work鈥 How long does it聽take Rare to聽start seeing these connections and聽start sending the聽right emails?
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. So, I聽mean, on聽the聽back end we聽extract a聽lot of聽that complication for聽merchants. So, based on聽we鈥檝e been in聽business for聽over six years, and, like I聽said, across a聽couple of聽different platforms with some with, you know, servicing merchant and聽a聽bunch of聽different industries, so, we鈥檝e been able to聽collect and聽gather a聽lot of聽really interesting data that feeds back into the聽templates, that feeds back into the聽preset recommendations, when you say: 聯Hey, I聽need a聽welcome campaign.聰 So, we聽take care of聽you鈥檙e a聽smaller store, we鈥檙e basically giving you see data to聽start with based on聽what we鈥檝e seen work. Now, assuming your own customers start to聽interact with those emails, or聽they interact with your website, or聽they start racking up聽some purchases through those emails, then we聽can actually start to聽tailor it聽a聽little bit more individually to聽them. But, you know, if聽you鈥檙e brand new, you鈥檙e just setting up聽your 黑料门 store today and聽you recognize that, even though it鈥檚 not super sexy, email marketing is聽probably a聽good channel for聽you to聽build and聽own over time and聽invest in聽over time, you can plug Rare and聽right away today and聽it聽will start learning as聽you start to聽add those customers, as聽people start to聽sign up聽your welcome email, you know, as聽people have abandoned their carts, you know, come back and聽purchased, it聽will learn who those people are and聽what鈥檚 happening and聽what the聽best is, you know, what the聽best products are to聽show them.
Richard: So, even though it鈥檚 nothing like Google Analytics, it鈥檚 like Google Analytics in聽that it鈥檚 better to聽have a聽connected to聽your website, even if聽you don鈥檛 use that data in聽the聽beginning, it聽will be聽useful later. So, in聽this particular case, you might not be聽using all the聽feature sets, but in聽the聽background without you doing anything, Rare is聽learning more about your customers, so聽as聽you decide to聽use the聽other feature sets, it鈥檚 ready to聽go.
Franco:: Yeah, absolutely. Exactly.
Jesse: Yeah, I聽think something that鈥檚 really interesting to聽me聽is, I聽take a聽look at, you know, of聽course we聽told people to聽build email list before and聽usually people put up聽a聽
Franco: Yeah, absolutely, and聽I聽think that, you know, in聽today鈥檚 world where everybody is聽glued to聽Instagram and, you know, Facebook or聽whatever you鈥檙e competing for聽customers attention, you鈥檙e competing with other notifications from a聽messaging app from the聽social network. So, if聽somebody is聽on聽your site and聽sees enough value, either or聽discount, you know, offer ethics into a聽newsletter or聽some, you know, special sales that only they would see or聽a聽members only section or聽word depending on聽your business model how you鈥檙e organizing that, you only have a聽split second to聽capture their attention and聽throw on聽their site and聽they see no聽value to聽give you their personal information, that email address where you can start to聽build that relationship with them, because that鈥檚 what they鈥檙e opting into they鈥檙e saying: 聯Hey, you have something that I聽want or聽there鈥檚 something in聽your brand that I聽really like and聽I聽want to聽be聽a聽part of聽it.聰 It鈥檚 a聽community movement kind of聽thing, but they鈥檙e busy they鈥檙e going to聽forget about you. And, so, 74% of聽people maybe that status change you know they expect an聽instant welcome email right then and聽there and聽kind of聽like saying you know don鈥檛 just make it聽out: 聯Hey, thanks for聽signing up. We鈥檒l be聽in聽touch in聽a聽month.聰 Not, like you still have their attention. Make that super actionable. Start sharing your mission and聽what you鈥檙e all about. Give them a聽place to聽start, especially if聽you have an聽extensive catalog or聽something like that, like they may not know what the聽best products are, what do聽what do聽other community members like, you know, what should I聽buy, are there any聽starter kits or聽is聽that kind of聽stuff, like. They鈥檙e excited, they鈥檝e given you that attention they bopped it聽in, so聽make it聽easy for聽them to聽take that next step and聽don鈥檛 wait a聽month to聽make that sale, go聽ahead and聽start, you know, in聽a聽positive and聽reinforcing manner just let them know that: 聯Hey, we鈥檙e here for聽you. Here鈥檚 some cool stuff that you might like to聽know, either about us, either about the聽community that you鈥檙e joining or聽about, you know, some of聽the聽products that we聽have on聽the聽site, that we聽think you might like as聽somebody who鈥檚 new here.聰
Richard: So, does this Rare also, well, obviously, you鈥檙e tracking that users what they鈥檙e doing and聽figuring out what would be聽good to聽recommend to聽them. Are they also keeping in聽mind, are you also keeping in聽mind other users and聽what you鈥檇 see other people鈥檚 patterns and聽maybe recommend like 聯Other people kind of, other people are doing this you might want to聽look at聽this聰, so聽even if聽they鈥檙e brand loyal you start to聽see a聽bunch of聽other people use and聽just say: 聯Shimano, back to聽the聽bike stuff.聰 And then they start going over to聽another brand or聽they see something that works well with that brand, do聽you start kind of聽working with the聽other users data too?
Franco: Yeah, for聽sure. So聽there are some some of聽that cross pollination, especially if聽there is聽a聽limited size catalog or聽they seem to聽be聽slowing down in聽some of聽the聽purchasers, depending on聽what鈥檚 happening globally on聽the聽site, you can start to聽see some of聽that stuff come into the聽recommendations, but we聽try to聽tailor it聽as聽much as聽possible to聽the聽individual, but it鈥檚 really based on聽the聽business and聽the聽store size. So, you know, everybody gets something a聽little bit different depending on聽who they are and聽who they鈥檙e trying to聽sell to.
Jesse: Yeah, that鈥檚 awesome. I聽think there was something you said too, Franco, that like I聽think it鈥檚 important to聽stress to聽people, that when people are on聽your website, if聽they give you their email, they expect to聽hear from you and聽they probably expect to聽hear from me聽a聽couple of聽times, so聽you鈥檒l really like, I聽think a聽lot of聽people are afraid to聽send emails sometimes, they feel like they鈥檙e spamming, or, you know, 聯I聽really shouldn鈥檛 do聽this,聰 but, you know, you said it聽right that people are expecting to聽hear from you and聽this is聽the聽opportunity where that that attention that they鈥檝e now given you, there鈥檚 a聽lifespan to聽it, if聽you don鈥檛 let them know, you know, like let鈥檚 say you wait a聽month for聽your next newsletter, you鈥檝e really lost the聽opportunity and聽that person is聽not there. They don鈥檛 like respect you for聽waiting a聽month to聽send an聽email there. They鈥檙e like: 聯No, I聽signed up, I聽want to聽hear your story,聰 so.
Franco: For sure, and聽they have probably bought from a聽competitor, you know, 30聽days is聽way too long. In聽the聽age of聽fast shipping and聽being able to聽find anything at聽your fingertips, you know, I聽would have moved on聽and聽gone and聽gone to聽the聽next person, if聽I聽hadn鈥檛 heard from, you know, certain vendor or聽whatever. Yeah, so, capitalize on聽those opportunities, capitalize or聽want attention and聽go聽ahead and聽make the聽sale.
Richard: Yeah, especially for聽those people who sometimes use it聽as聽they get this, give us聽your email we鈥檒l give you this digital download, and聽they don鈥檛 even, you know, they鈥檙e on聽to聽something else. They don鈥檛 even go聽look at聽the聽digital download yet. Now you wait for聽a聽while and聽you send an聽email and聽you didn鈥檛 do聽anything. Sometimes, I鈥檓 sure, I聽don鈥檛 know the聽exact stats, but I鈥檓 sure there鈥檚 a聽pretty high percentage that are, like: 聯Who is聽this again, like, I聽don鈥檛 remember who this is?聰 You don鈥檛 do聽some sort of聽indoctrination series of聽some kind.
Franco: Yeah, exactly. I聽mean, you know, talking about emailing in聽30聽days or聽the聽old kind of聽newsletter paradigm towards email marketing, you know, each individual is聽different, not only in聽the聽product recommendations that they want to聽see, based on聽purchase history, or聽what they鈥檙e looking on聽the聽site, or聽wish list, or聽whatever, but each individual now also, you know, we聽all know, it鈥檚 a聽busy world. We鈥檙e all kind of聽on聽our own schedule, so, you know, you shouldn鈥檛 just send your emails every Monday at聽9:00聽a.m.. You know, I聽shop at聽night and聽that鈥檚 when I聽have free time and聽it鈥檚, you know, on聽my聽iPhone when I鈥檓 on聽the聽couch. So, Rare also takes into account that smart timing sort of聽element to聽it聽is, you know, welcome emails, you definitely want instantaneously, they like I聽said giving you your attention for聽other things, other campaigns, other automated emails, you want it聽to聽happen when that person is聽ready for聽it聽and聽when they鈥檙e most likely to聽buy from your store. So, Rare also takes that into account of聽saying: 聯Hey, you know, we鈥檙e some emails that need to聽go聽out right away.聰 And that鈥檚 baked into the聽template, we聽recommend not changing it. But then there鈥檚 other emails where, you know, you as聽a聽store owner, think: 聯Hey, I鈥檓 going to聽blast everybody, you know, Tuesday at聽9:00聽a.m. or聽Monday at聽9:00聽a.m. and聽kickoff the聽week, well, you know, Monday morning at聽9:00聽a.m. that鈥檚 when I鈥檓 emptying my聽inbox from all the聽emails I鈥檝e got over the聽weekend, to聽start fresh in聽the聽week, you know, that鈥檚 another element to聽keep in聽mind.
Jesse: So, I聽know some point in聽there you were mentioning, like discount codes, so, I鈥檇 imagine you have to聽go聽create those codes in, like, yourself in聽the聽site and聽then Rare just pulls those codes out or聽how, give me聽the聽101聽on聽how that works?
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. So, I聽mean, the聽
Richard: Got it. So, say, you had a聽code in聽there, that said: 10聽there, let鈥檚 going to聽make some up聽here. There鈥檚 a聽5聽percent code, there鈥檚 a聽10聽percent off code, and聽there鈥檚 a聽15聽percent off code, you could set it聽up聽to聽where, if聽somebody keeps coming back to聽the聽site and聽they always buy something, then I鈥檓 literally making this nearly up聽right now, say, maybe, you do, like, a聽this one is聽going to聽be聽a聽15聽percent off, we鈥檙e going to聽give a聽bigger discount, but it鈥檚 going, but in聽the聽verbiage it鈥檚 going to聽say: 聭Because you鈥檙e a聽loyal customer, we聽really want to聽say thank you and聽can鈥檛 really give away margin鈥檚 all the聽time,聮 whatever. I聽mean, that鈥檚 not the聽greatest email, obviously, but we聽want to聽say thank you, right, some sort of聽loyalty and聽then, maybe, someone else, like, they鈥檝e come multiple times and聽you want to聽give them a聽5聽percent, you know, they鈥檝e come here three times they haven鈥檛. And then they still don鈥檛 take advantage of聽that, and聽then two more weeks go聽by聽and聽then maybe now they get a聽10聽percent discount. And, you know, I鈥檇 imagine there鈥檚 times that this works great, but I聽imagine there鈥檚 some times where it鈥檚 almost, like: 聭Damn, now they鈥檙e always waiting for聽a聽discount code.聮 So聽having that AI聽is聽actually pretty cool. Can get that granular there?
Franco: Yes, what you鈥檙e talking about there is聽segmented, what鈥檚 called email marketing segmenting or聽email segmenting. And that鈥檚 where, you know, depending on聽which one you鈥檙e using it鈥檚 already baked right in聽a聽Rare, some other platforms you can do聽some external segmentation or聽whatever, but we鈥檝e got what you鈥檙e talking about baked right into the聽platform, where we聽have these segments, that just keep popping up聽or聽that you can create, if聽you鈥檙e looking for聽something super specific, you can get as聽granular, saying: 聭Hey all the聽people that I聽acquired, you know, from the聽Facebook ads campaign,聮 because I鈥檓 not saying: don鈥檛 do聽ads, I鈥檓 just saying: make sure you get their email. If聽you鈥檙e doing an聽ad聽and聽you鈥檙e you have a聽special offer and聽you want to, you know, and聽somebody purchase it聽through a聽coupon code or聽some you could say: 聭Hey, Rare, show me聽all the聽customers who came in聽through that offer by聽using that coupon code, and聽then you know show me聽what other products they鈥檝e purchased in聽the聽past, or聽show me聽how much money they鈥檝e since spent, or聽what cities that they came from, or聽all kinds of聽information like that.聮 So, that鈥檚 really where, you know, our customer success team can come in聽to聽help you navigate those waters, because there are so聽many different signals to聽look for, I聽mean, we聽do聽a聽good job of聽showcasing, like I聽said those basic things that we鈥檝e identified in聽your business that everybody should be聽doing if聽you want to聽be聽successful at聽selling online. And then, if聽you really take it聽to聽the聽next step, you know, we鈥檝e got a聽team of聽experts here, who can help you kind of聽figure out: How to聽do聽this segmentation? How do聽I聽automatically send, you know, a聽five percent discount code if聽they鈥檝e been here every day and聽they鈥檙e not converting? How to聽increase it聽from there? If聽somebody is聽buying a聽lot, how do聽I聽keep them engaged, but don鈥檛 give them too much. That鈥檚 something we聽can help regrow for聽sure and聽it鈥檚 all, you know, the聽capacity is聽baked into the聽system.
Jesse: That鈥檚 great. So, this isn鈥檛 really, this isn鈥檛 a聽DIY project, like, this is聽a,聽you know, hit up聽support, give them your questions and聽they can help guide you as聽well.
Franco: Yeah, I聽mean, the聽beautiful thing about Rare is聽it鈥檚 a聽pretty big open toolbox, so聽if聽you got the聽expertise of, you know, enterprise level, you know, email marketing or聽
Jesse: That鈥檚 awesome. So, we聽talked a聽little bit about some, you know, some
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. So, I聽mean, we鈥檝e got a聽bunch of聽黑料门 stories on聽the聽Rare platform, but I聽would totally recommend going to聽check out that coffeeroasters.com.hk there actually, the聽company is聽called Coffee Roasters Asia, but they鈥檝e done a聽really amazing job, you know, they鈥檝e only been on聽the聽platform, they鈥檝e been using Rare for聽four months, and聽we鈥檝e been able to聽help them earn, like, over 10,000聽dollars through email marketing. So, that鈥檚, you know, directly attributed to聽the聽emails that they send out. Now they do聽a聽lot of聽campaigns, so聽they are setting up聽specific sales or聽specific events, but they do聽have some automation set up聽as聽well and聽that鈥檚 quickly growing and聽ready to聽the聽automation stuff is, again where you鈥檙e making the聽money in聽your sleep where you don鈥檛 necessarily need to聽be聽ready and聽on聽standby to聽send every single person who takes different action on聽your store a聽different email, Rare will handle that for聽you, so聽you can get some sleep, but still make some money, or聽you can take a聽weekend off and聽know that, you know, we鈥檙e still making you money and聽you also have us聽to聽feel when you鈥檙e back or聽whatever, but at聽least we鈥檙e getting you those orders.
For sure. Yeah, actually, I聽just checked out the聽site. It鈥檚 coffeeroasters.com.hk for聽everybody and聽this I聽think is聽a聽good example for聽people to聽help visualize it, you know, that, so聽they sell specialty coffee and聽specifically in聽Hong Kong. They actually have a聽Chinese and聽an聽English version. So, that鈥檚 pretty cool, actually. But, my聽guess is聽that people that buy one specific coffee here, like, specialty gold apple fresh bread pomerleau, like, they might be聽ready to聽reorder in聽say 14聽days or聽30聽days or聽something, so, I聽mean, it聽makes an聽obvious, like, that email makes perfect sense, like: 聭Ok, they bought this kind of聽coffee, they probably want that again in聽a聽certain amount of聽days, so, I聽mean, is聽that what you guys did for聽them, that type of聽automation?
Franco: Yeah, exactly, that kind of聽stuff, again welcome email, so, you know, people want to聽try something, so聽especially, you know, that guys ship internationally. So, especially if聽you want to聽try something new, that comes from, you know, different places where you鈥檙e not really sure you notice something different than going to聽the聽grocery store and聽just picking up聽whatever folders or聽something like that. You know, you want to聽sort of聽entice people to聽try something new and聽so聽these kind of聽products, where, you know, you鈥檙e able to聽kind of聽consume them and聽have people come back and聽either discover new things or, you know, tend, you know, create new flavor profiles and聽they want to聽reorder, that the聽kind of聽automation that we聽can take care of聽for聽you, so聽that automatically, you know, if聽you know that your products tend to聽last for聽a聽month, maybe on聽day 25聽you send somebody: 聭Hey, you鈥檙e about to聽run out of聽coffee, that would suck if聽you wake up聽you know Monday morning and聽don鈥檛 have coffee, how about you place an聽order now and聽it聽will be聽at聽your place for, you know, before you run out,聮 something like that. Or聽you could be, like: 聭Hey, you know, we鈥檝e noticed you tend to聽try a聽lot of聽these types of聽coffee beans, maybe, you want to聽try something a聽little bit darker, maybe something a聽little bit lighter,聮 or: 聭Hey, we鈥檙e introducing a聽new roast!聮 That鈥檚 just one example, you know, of聽a聽consumable kind of聽product. Same thing for聽cosmetics versus, you know, apparel, you know, unless you鈥檙e bringing it聽out, unless the聽season is聽changing where you live and聽you need some heavier or聽lighter clothes, or聽there鈥檚 a聽new collection coming out, you know, you have to聽kind of聽create those opportunities to聽kind of聽sell and聽hit people look. Whereas if聽it鈥檚 consumable, like, through the聽coffee, or聽cosmetics where people are using shampoo, they鈥檙e using their makeup, they鈥檙e using their body wash, they鈥檙e drinking their coffee, you know, there you can set up聽a聽lot more of聽that kind of聽automation, where you鈥檙e doing the聽product refills. But there鈥檚 opportunities for聽automation in聽every business type, in聽every business model, no聽matter what you鈥檙e doing, and聽once you have that set up, then it鈥檚 work that you don鈥檛 have to聽recreate, it聽just repeats itself for聽you. And so聽now you鈥檙e saving a聽bunch of聽time and聽you鈥檙e able to聽focus on聽other aspects of聽your business.
Richard: Wow, that鈥檚 awesome. So, Franco, I聽know you have another product you鈥檙e working on聽and聽I聽don鈥檛 want to聽go聽deep into that now we鈥檒l have you back on聽another time. But, I聽was just thinking about this as聽you were kind of聽going through a聽lot of聽that, and聽then you went into the聽segmentation piece. Is聽it聽pretty easy to聽segment the聽list and聽actually can you export that list to, say, I聽want to聽only advertise to聽people, who鈥檝e bought these type of聽products or聽is聽that something we聽should cover at聽another time?
Franco: The capacity is聽all there and聽that鈥檚 where you鈥檙e getting into some of聽the聽stuff that I聽love to聽do, because, you know, I鈥檓 a聽growth marketer and聽an聽email guy. And, so, that鈥檚 where, yeah once you own that email address or聽once you own that customer you have that relationship, you were able to聽now use that, you know, you retargeting ads or聽to聽try and聽create a聽Lookalike audience on聽Facebook. So, that鈥檚 how you grow your business, I聽mean, so聽but it聽all starts off with that email list. It聽all starts off with that email list, that鈥檚 the聽hard work of聽building that relationship and, I聽mean, you know, and聽you don鈥檛 want to聽sound malicious or聽anything like that either in聽terms of, you know, didn鈥檛 look like audiences are retargeting or聽anything like that. Those are the聽tools that you need to聽leverage to聽try compete with other brands, but make sure that your loyal customers are staying engaged with your audience otherwise, somebody鈥檚 going to聽come in聽there and聽scoop that up. So, I聽mean, I聽don鈥檛 mind seeing brand鈥檚 ads for聽products that I聽love, especially if聽there鈥檚 something new coming out, or聽something I聽should try that I聽haven鈥檛. It聽sort of聽acts as聽a聽reminder and, you know, when I鈥檓 ready to聽capitalize, I鈥檝e seen that ad, there鈥檚 been enough touch points, I聽trust them, I鈥檓 ready to聽order. You know, so聽you got to聽think of聽it聽in聽that way, I聽mean, there鈥檚 always, for聽sure, less than positive or聽less than ideal ways and, you know, outcomes, but, you know, you try to聽focus on聽the聽good stuff of聽building a聽real company, building a聽real brand and聽being there to聽fulfill the聽needs and聽wants of聽your customers.
Jesse: And I聽think the聽important thing there is聽that it聽all starts with the聽email. So, you know, everybody should know by聽now if聽you listen to聽this whole podcast you got to聽get the聽email, but not only do聽you have to聽get the聽email the聽person who signed up聽your newsletter or聽whatever automation they鈥檙e in, and聽they need to聽be聽kind of聽indoctrinated into your company, you can鈥檛 just send one email and聽then later on聽think they鈥檙e going to聽continue to聽buy from you, so. So, definitely, get that first email, and聽I聽think we鈥檙e giving you all the聽tools to聽do聽it. We聽just need you to聽just need to聽help you along the聽way.
Franco: Yeah, exactly. I聽mean, like we鈥檙e saying, you know, going up聽the聽whole way, like, we聽can get really deep into this and聽geeky on聽the聽
Jesse: Oh, for聽sure. I聽mean, that鈥檚 the聽full playbook there everybody鈥檚, so, Franko, that鈥檚 awesome content. I聽hope a聽lot of聽people are taking some notes, pulling over on聽their drive to, you know, I聽think about the聽plan out their email. But, I聽mean, so聽obviously, best place for聽黑料门 customers is聽to聽go聽to聽the聽黑料门 App Market and聽you鈥檙e looking for聽Rare.io, since I聽butchered it聽earlier, but, Franco, where else can people learn about you guys? I聽would assume you have an聽email series, that maybe people would be聽interested in?
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. I聽mean, folks can visit our website as聽well, I聽mean, we聽link to聽it聽from the聽黑料门 App store, but people can check us聽out at聽Rare.io, and聽there we, you know, we鈥檝e got a聽blog, we聽do聽have a聽newsletter series that goes out where we聽educate folks, our customer support team and聽success team are standing by聽all the聽time. They鈥檙e happy to聽help out if聽you鈥檝e got questions about, you know: 聭Hey, you know, how do聽I聽get started, what should I聽be聽looking for?聮 We鈥檝e got all kinds of聽helpful information that we聽can either share or聽jump on聽a聽coaching call and聽help you.
Jesse: Awesome. And, Frank, what if聽they want to聽hear more from you personally, is聽there any聽place that they can find you online?
Franco: Yeah, absolutely. The best place to聽find me聽online is, you know, on聽Twitter: @francovarriano, and, of聽course, @rareio as聽well.
Jesse: Awesome. Rich, any聽last questions?
Richard: No, I聽was just laughing, because I聽had already just followed them Twitter, like three minutes before he聽said that.
Jesse: Awesome, we鈥檙e watching it聽on聽Twitter now, Franco, so, awesome, I聽appreciate it. Have a聽good one.
Franco: Thanks so聽much guys. Really loved being here today.
Richard: We鈥檒l look forward to聽having you back.
Jesse: All right, Rich鈥
Richard: It鈥檚 good stuff. Yeah, I聽can鈥檛 wait to, you know, a聽little leak on聽what the聽others, they鈥檙e going to聽be聽working a聽little bit more with advertising and聽retargeting.
Jesse: Let鈥檚 not scare all our listeners, Rich. Come on聽now.
Richard: No, not scared, no, no.
Jesse: We聽want to聽we聽want everybody be聽excited about doing this email, because.
Richard: It鈥檚 inspirational, people aspire to聽be聽better, grow, like, they got the聽meat, they know where they can get started. All is聽good.
Jesse: You have your store. You got to聽think about email and聽then you think about advertising, or聽maybe advertising first email, second.
Richard: See what I聽mean? You see what I鈥檓 saying? I鈥檓 not going deep, just looking forward to聽it.
Jesse: I鈥檓 with you. But, yeah, I聽mean, couple of聽things that stood out to聽me聽from what Franko said, I聽think particularly for聽beginners, we聽went in聽depth on聽some stuff here, but I聽think the聽beauty is聽that the聽templates already exist in聽the聽software, so聽you don鈥檛 really need to, if聽you didn鈥檛 understand half what we聽said, that鈥檚 fine.
Richard: It聽doesn鈥檛 even matter.
Jesse: Yeah, you just, you know, I鈥檓 kind of聽pumped I聽think I聽got to聽sign up聽for聽this now and聽just go聽through this. And I聽think, what templates mean is, OK聽we聽said welcome series, or聽we聽said you know, abandoned cart series, well, it鈥檚 already written for聽you. You just need to聽change some of聽the聽words, you know.
Richard: Exactly, like, 80聽percent of聽it聽is聽written. Now you just put your store name instead of聽that template store name and聽you put the聽way you would word your product or聽whatever. But it鈥檚 probably 80聽percent written for聽you. You don鈥檛 have to聽configure things.
Jesse: Yeah. Yeah, I鈥檓 in聽the聽middle of聽a聽project right now where I鈥檓 undergoing some of聽this stuff and聽I鈥檓 writing all those things and聽figuring out when should I聽send this email like, I鈥檓 doing it聽the聽hard way. I聽want the聽easy way.
Richard: It鈥檚 part of聽what the聽beauty of聽黑料门 is, it聽seems, like, everything from 黑料门 itself to聽the聽partners, it聽seems like you guys are really always keeping the聽customer in聽mind that, yes you want to聽grow, but we鈥檙e going to聽try to聽get it聽as聽easy for聽you to聽get started as聽possible, sales, 101.
Jesse: Yeah, I聽think this is聽like just another example of, basically, all this stuff is聽was enterprise stuff. Ten years ago, even five years ago, this would be, you have to聽go聽through a聽sales process you鈥檙e paying thousands of聽dollars for聽somebody to聽scope this out, you know, so聽now with with
Richard: Good stuff. Yeah. All right. Let鈥檚 sign up.
Jesse: All right. Rare.io, Franco, you got two customers here, so聽that鈥檚 awesome. All right, everybody with 黑料门
