On聽this episode, we聽take a聽completely different tack from tactical how to聽and聽we聽get deep with noted business author Michael Gerber who coined the聽phrase 聯work on聽your business, not in聽your business聰. We聽start at聽the聽beginning of聽the聽entrepreneurial journey.
Transcript
Jesse: How鈥檚 it聽going, Richard?
Richard: I鈥檓 super excited today. It鈥檚 a聽big one for聽us.
Jesse: This is聽a聽big one. Yes so, super excited today. Actually in聽front of聽me, I聽have a聽book in聽front of聽me聽
Richard: Yeah. Today we聽have with us聽the聽guru of聽systems, processes for聽basically structuring your business for聽growth from a聽company of聽one to聽a聽company of聽one thousand. We聽have the聽Michael E.聽Gerber in聽house this morning and聽he聽is聽author of聽multiple books, the聽most common probably known 聯The
Michael: Thank you very much, gentlemen, I聽love being here.
Richard: And so, when an聽entrepreneur first starts thinking about becoming an聽entrepreneur, what do聽you encourage them to聽do? I聽know, I鈥檓 familiar with the聽dreaming room but we聽don鈥檛 necessarily have to聽go聽all the聽way into the聽dreaming room, but what is, how important is聽the聽dream?
Michael: Well it鈥檚 everything. It鈥檚 everything from the聽beginning, to聽the聽middle, to聽the聽end. It鈥檚 the聽reason you鈥檙e doing it. And so聽the聽reason they鈥檙e doing it聽is聽what effectively I聽engage them in. So聽why are you doing this? So聽what does this mean to聽you? So聽why is聽this important? So聽why is聽this important to聽the聽people you believe, you want to聽take it聽out to. So聽what are you going to聽give to聽the聽people you鈥檙e taking this out to? So聽if聽I聽don鈥檛 find something compelling in聽that, I聽know that鈥檚 a聽lot of聽work to聽be聽done. And the聽problem is聽having called on聽literally hundreds, upon hundreds, upon hundreds of聽thousands of聽small business owners down the聽street, knocking on聽doors. I聽mean the聽real doors, not the聽electronic door, the聽real door. The doors that people can shut in聽your face, that nobody wants you to聽walk into the聽real doors. The hero is聽back then, my聽guys, back then, my聽guys, my聽ladies would knock on聽doors to聽engage every single small business owner in聽a聽story. So聽I聽understand the聽story. So聽the聽critical element that鈥檚 missing in聽almost every small company I鈥檝e ever walk into is聽a聽compelling story. Human beings live for聽stories, and聽so聽what鈥檚 the聽story. Well understand the聽Torah it鈥檚 a聽story, you understand, The New Testament, It鈥檚 a聽story, you understand. Apple is聽a聽story, Google聽鈥 it鈥檚 a聽story. Every company that鈥檚 ever been started is聽a聽story, and聽so聽every individual who starts a聽company has to聽become and聽discover the聽storyteller within them to聽discover the聽real reason they鈥檙e doing this.
And the聽problem is聽for聽every single one of聽them the聽real reason they鈥檙e doing this is聽money, meaning to聽make a聽living. So聽every single person I鈥檝e ever spoken to聽barn none, their answer would be聽to聽make some money. Not just some money to聽make a聽living, but not just some living but a聽really groovy living, and聽not just a聽groovy living to聽make a聽whole bunch of聽money, the聽millionaire next door. That鈥檚 why the聽Millionaire Next Door attracts all that greedy stupid stuff that sits inside of聽everybody. I聽want to聽be聽free, I聽want to聽be聽independent, I聽want to聽have to聽work my聽butt off doing it, doing it, doing it, doing it. I聽want, I聽want, I聽want, I聽want. And that鈥檚 the聽beginning of聽the聽conversation. That鈥檚 a聽most compelling conversation you can ever have with anybody, because as聽you begin to, you truly discover what鈥檚 missing in聽this picture, what鈥檚 missing inside of聽this human being, this human being, who鈥檚 off the聽rail, not on聽the聽rail. And, you guys know, you鈥檝e been in聽the聽business for聽a聽long long time, most people you meet are off the聽rail, not on聽the聽rail.
So聽my聽job is, first of聽all, to聽get them to聽see that. So聽what鈥檚 missing in聽this picture is聽the聽most important conversation, one can have, in聽order to聽get to聽the聽most important reason for聽being in聽business that one can have, like Steve Jobs, like the聽Google boys, etc., etc., etc., etc.
Richard: So聽why do聽you think so聽many people have a聽hard time dreaming in聽general. Maybe they daydream a聽lot but, what is聽it聽that seems does it, do聽you think they feel it鈥檚 daunting, or聽they just too quick trying to聽think of聽the聽money piece or?
Michael: Dreaming happens. You go聽to聽sleep you have a聽dream, you don鈥檛 go聽to聽sleep to聽dream. Dreaming happens, you don鈥檛 make it聽happen. So聽first of聽all nobody鈥檚 ever been taught to聽dream. We聽never were, we聽never were taught to聽dream when, we聽were four years old. We聽were never taught to聽dream, when we聽were 12聽years old. We聽were never taught to聽dream, but we聽are 26聽years old, when we聽went into the聽military, the聽sergeant didn鈥檛 say 聯Dream!聰
Jesse: I聽think that鈥檚 seems like the聽last thing you hear.
Michael: The last thing you had in聽mind, right. And when we聽went to聽MIT nobody said 聯dream聰, so聽effectively it鈥檚 because we聽don鈥檛, it鈥檚 foreign to聽us. So聽it鈥檚 foreign to聽us, especially what I聽call 聯intentional dreaming聰.
Intentional dreaming is聽an聽act of聽dreaming for聽a聽very specific reason and聽that reason goes back to聽what鈥檚 missing in聽this picture. And what鈥檚 missing in聽this picture for聽the聽vast majority of聽people on聽the聽planet is聽what it聽means to聽be聽a聽human being, what it聽means to聽be聽alive. And so聽that conversation is聽in聽fact the聽conversation behind the聽
Jesse: We聽have to聽edit that out! (laughing)
Michael: I鈥檓 not saying that, I鈥檓 saying, but it鈥檚 very close to聽that. And so聽that was the聽motivation for聽everything I鈥檝e done. So聽you understand, so聽what does it聽mean to聽lead a聽stupid life, and聽what does it聽mean to聽lead a聽true life that has true meaning. Well, I聽have to聽come face to聽face with what does that look like for聽me.
So聽in聽the聽very first section of聽the聽seven steps that I聽talk about in聽the聽
Richard: Yeah, because you鈥檝e got to聽set them up聽according to聽the聽dream.
Michael: Of聽course the聽dream is聽the聽primary, the聽systems are the聽secondary that the聽means to, they鈥檙e not the聽end. And so聽most often, I鈥檓 misinterpreted by聽people who are caught in聽their minds as聽opposed to聽their hearts as聽a聽deep thinker. I鈥檓 not a聽deep thinker, I鈥檓 a聽deep feeler. In聽short, I聽deeply know that the聽meaning of聽my聽life is聽the聽whole of聽my聽life. Now you know, because you celebrated it, I聽just celebrated my聽
So聽the聽dreamer is聽the聽creator, the聽dreamer is聽the聽first principle personality of聽the聽entrepreneur. The entrepreneur is聽a聽dreamer, a聽thinker, a聽storyteller and聽a聽leader. The dreamer has a聽dream, the聽thinker has a聽vision. the聽storyteller has a聽purpose, and聽the聽leader has a聽mission. My聽job is聽to聽help my聽client understand those and聽to聽engage with those, and聽discover those inside of聽himself or聽herself, even if聽it聽takes him three years to聽do聽it. And understand it鈥檚 going to聽piss away that time anyway. Even if聽it聽took him three years, five years to聽do聽it, wouldn鈥檛 make any聽difference. To聽suddenly come face to聽face with the聽reason you鈥檙e here. I聽mean the聽reason you鈥檙e here.
Richard: Big difference.
Michael: I聽mean, think about it. And suddenly then we鈥檙e working on聽a聽business to聽grow from a聽company of聽one to聽a聽company of聽1000聽that has a聽reason for聽being here, not just making a聽living. Do聽you understand, any聽dummy can make a聽living?
Now there are a聽lot of聽dummies not making a聽living and聽of聽course I鈥檓 interested in聽those dummies who are not making a聽living, but understand, it鈥檚 not because they鈥檙e not making a聽living. It鈥檚 because there is聽no聽reason for聽them being. So聽we鈥檝e got to聽find the聽reason. And that鈥檚 the聽job. That鈥檚 your job. That鈥檚 my聽job. That鈥檚 your job, Rich. It鈥檚 our job. Our job is聽to聽find the聽reason and聽then dig down deeper, don鈥檛 just accept a聽quickie answer to聽the: 聯So what are you here for聽what are you here?..聰 Well I鈥檓 here to聽make, I鈥檝e heard so聽many stupid answers. I鈥檓 simply saying it鈥檚 not that, we鈥檙e looking for聽the聽real one. And you鈥檒l know the聽real one the聽minute they say it. Just as聽they will, because it聽won鈥檛 be聽just something. You follow me?
Jesse: Oh, definitely.
Richard: Well I聽mean in聽addition to聽that some of聽the聽things that can kind of聽be聽assumed, although, I聽don鈥檛 like to聽do聽that too often. But I聽imagine reading between the聽lines and聽knowing a聽little bit more about you is, it鈥檚 going to聽take work no聽matter what, right. This is, no聽one just comes out and聽hands out a聽million dollars. Not that I鈥檝e found yet. But it鈥檚 going to聽take work and聽so聽having that reason, having that why, having that fuel inside, that inspiration, when you have an聽inspiration of聽a聽dream, energy comes from places you鈥檝e never even really knew you had.
Michael: That鈥檚 important. It聽comes from places you never even were aware of. And that鈥檚 energy. So聽the聽energy is聽the聽source of聽passion, and聽passion is聽the聽source of聽imagination, and聽imagination is聽the聽source of聽vision. So聽effectively if聽Steve Jobs weren鈥檛 consumed with passion, the聽passion of聽the聽creator, the聽creator has a聽passion unlike any聽passion of聽any聽human being on聽the聽planet. The creator were born in聽the聽image of聽God, it聽said, which means were born to聽create. So聽you suddenly see there鈥檚 a聽reason for聽us聽being here, we鈥檙e born to聽create, we鈥檙e born to聽create what? We鈥檙e born to聽create a聽world fit for聽God. So聽I鈥檓 speaking to聽people who may not even believe in聽God. Say, I聽don鈥檛 know how anybody could not believe in聽God. When did you stop believing in聽God, there鈥檚 no聽other reason, there鈥檚 no聽reason at聽all.
You understand? No, none, zero. It鈥檚 a聽great story. It鈥檚 the聽great story that people have told from the聽very beginning from Adam and聽Eve. So聽effectively we聽have to聽know what that story is, and聽we聽have to聽suddenly come face to聽face with our role in聽that story. Something magical happens. It鈥檚 just it聽literally is聽you both know that, because you both and聽each done that.
Something magical happens to聽you. It聽doesn鈥檛, you don鈥檛 make it. It聽makes you. So聽it鈥檚 not like 聯I鈥檝e written that book聰聽鈥 it聽wrote that book. The reality is聽it聽does that and聽it聽is聽the聽creator within. And it鈥檚 as聽separate from Michael sitting here speaking to聽you right now as聽anything we聽could imagine. So聽it鈥檚 not me聽doing that. It鈥檚 IT聽doing that. My聽job is聽to聽get plugged into it, and聽in聽order to聽get plugged into it, I聽have to聽open myself to聽it聽to. To聽open myself to聽it聽I鈥檝e got to聽shut down all the聽other 聯yes but, yes but聰, and聽so聽forth, and聽so聽forth. This might sound terribly, terribly. Whatever, but it聽is. But it鈥檚 the聽truth and聽every single client I鈥檝e had over 100,000聽small business clients in聽the聽past 40聽years, every single one of聽those 100,000聽plus small business owners who came to聽us, because they read the聽story and聽they said: 聯I聽got to聽do聽this.聰 Every single one of聽them had a聽belief about something that was inhibiting them from creating. We聽had to聽get rid of聽that belief. We聽had to聽get rid of聽all the聽stuff that they brought with them to聽the聽conversation. So聽I聽invented what I聽call a聽聯blank piece of聽paper and聽beginner鈥檚 mind.聰 So聽the聽way you approach this is聽literally a聽blank piece of聽paper and聽a聽beginner鈥檚 mind. It鈥檚 how you鈥檝e approached everything you鈥檝e ever created. I聽don鈥檛 start whipping out something and聽drawing as聽a聽schema, I聽don鈥檛 do聽that. It聽never happens to聽me聽like that. I聽start writing words. I聽don鈥檛 write them, IT聽does. You may know, and聽I鈥檓 sure you receive my聽monologues. Have you received my聽monologues either of聽you?
Richard: I聽have.
Jesse: Yes.
Michael: Yeah. So聽the聽monologues, there are now 200聽of聽them and聽I聽send one out every week, and聽there what you might say are what they are entrepreneurial poems, and聽so聽I聽wrote a聽poem once a聽week. Now when I聽say: 聯I聽write a聽poem once a聽week,聰 I聽don鈥檛 really write a聽poem once a聽week, IT聽writes a聽poem once a聽week, because I聽sit down without a聽thought in聽my聽head and聽just start writing, literally without a聽thought in聽my聽head. There鈥檚 not a聽plan has ever been put to聽work on聽a聽monologue. Like today, I聽think I鈥檒l write about. Never. I聽disallow it. I鈥檓 as聽interested in聽what鈥檚 going to聽come as聽my聽reader might be.
So聽we聽have about ten thousand people subscribers to聽our monologues. But what you鈥檒l discover if聽you truly pay attention to聽the聽monologues, you鈥檒l discover how creation occurs. That鈥檚 a聽fascinating thing. It鈥檚 a聽fascinating thing. So聽that鈥檚 what I鈥檝e been doing for聽the聽past 40聽years.
Richard: I聽love it. I聽could imagine聽鈥 knowing a聽little more about you than we鈥檙e going to聽have time to聽cover this you know 45聽minutes an聽hour. You know I聽know you could talk about this for聽the聽next five years. Just this one piece, because it鈥檚 so聽critical to聽it. And I聽would say before we聽get into anything else, just to聽maybe bring in, even though you probably hate I鈥檓 saying this, to聽bring in聽the聽dream a聽little bit to聽where someone can comprehend that, it鈥檚 OK聽to聽say something, as聽big as聽you want to聽say it聽like you want to聽end world hunger. You want to聽like, you know what I聽mean, like some people think: 聯Oh, the聽dreams got to聽be, I鈥檓 going to聽make, I鈥檓 going to聽sell this widget and聽I鈥檒l do聽pay enough to聽pay the聽family house and鈥β It鈥檚 like, that鈥檚 not a聽dream.
Michael: No, those are objectives.
Richard: Yeah, that鈥檚 not a聽dream. So聽what鈥檚 something just in聽a聽
Michael: Sure you are.
Richard: Everyone wants a聽hack, a聽three year and聽five minutes just saying, like, how would they know they鈥檙e starting to聽go聽down the聽path of聽actual real..?
Michael: How do聽you know when you鈥檙e when you fall in聽love?
Richard: Yeah you鈥檙e being like my聽dad when I聽said 聯How am聽I聽going to聽know when I鈥檝e tuned a聽guitar? 聭You鈥檒l know when you go, when you鈥檝e tuned the聽guitar.聮 You tell them, I聽just never understood that same darn thing.
Michael: Same darn thing. Our dream in聽1977, when I聽started the聽Michael Thomas corporation聽鈥 I聽was Michael, he聽was Thomas. It聽was, it聽came to聽be聽the聽very first business coaching company on聽the聽planet. We聽invented business coaching.
Now that鈥檚 an聽extraordinary thing to聽say and聽people say: 聭Oh come on. You couldn鈥檛 have invented business coaching. It鈥檚 like a聽one point three billion dollar reality today.聮 We聽invented small business coaching. And, when we聽decided to聽do聽that it聽was because I鈥檇 been working with small business owners by聽accident. My聽brother in聽law owned an聽ad聽agency and聽he聽had a聽problem with one of聽his clients, and聽he聽asked if聽I聽would go聽talk to聽his client about a聽problem he聽had聽鈥 converting leads into sales.
And I聽told my聽
Because that鈥檚 all that has to聽happen at聽the聽front. That鈥檚 how you convert the聽lead into the聽first benchmark, and聽what we鈥檙e calling a聽sale.聮 So聽the聽question becomes what鈥檚 the聽first benchmark? And he鈥檚 already lost. He聽said: 聭Wait a聽second.聮 I聽said: 聭No, let me聽explain. The problem is聽you don鈥檛 have a聽selling system because you don鈥檛 understand the聽story. And the聽story is聽the聽ball game.聮 He聽said: 聭Well, do聽you know how to聽write that story?聮 I聽said: 聭Sure.聮 He聽said: 聭Will you write it聽for聽me? I聽said: 聭Sure.聮 He聽said Ace would figure out what to聽pay me, Ace pick me聽up, I鈥檒l talk to聽him about it, and聽then he鈥檒l come back to聽you. I鈥檒l see you shortly, Bob.聮 And that was the聽end of聽the聽conversation.
Ace picks me聽up聽he聽said: 聭What happened?聮 I聽said: 聭He just hired me.聮 聭He just hired you? How?聮 I聽said: 聭Well, I聽told him to聽fix his problem.聮 He聽said: 聭But you told me聽you couldn鈥檛 fix his problem because you don鈥檛 know anything about business, you don鈥檛 know anything about his private guys.聮 聭Well that鈥檚 still true. I聽don鈥檛, but that鈥檚 very easy to聽learn. It鈥檚 not the聽knowing about the聽product that鈥檚 critical. I聽learned that in聽about five seconds, asking him a聽question. What鈥檚 missing is聽how we聽say that to聽the聽consumer, and聽all he聽got to聽do聽is聽write that.
So聽that was the聽beginning of聽the聽second one, the聽third one, the聽fourth one, the聽fifth one, the聽six one. And I鈥檓 suddenly discovering the聽
Richard: I鈥檓 sorry, Ace, I聽apologize.
And we聽started a聽business do聽just that, and聽that was the聽beginning of聽Tom鈥檚 and聽my聽conversation about a聽dream, a聽vision, a聽purpose, and聽a聽mission. We聽didn鈥檛 start doing what I聽knew how to聽do. We聽started by聽asking what is聽the聽endgame here. And we聽discovered our dream. My聽dream then, my聽dream still is聽to聽transform the聽state of聽small business worldwide. Anybody listening to聽me聽right now can immediately write that down and聽say 聭OK, to聽transform the聽state of聽_________ worldwide. That鈥檚 the聽business I鈥檓 in.聮 You follow me. That鈥檚 how easy it聽is聽to聽have a聽dream. But understand, I聽was really serious about it. You understand, this was a聽life鈥檚 work. This was my聽calling. This came to聽me聽at聽the聽age of聽38. I聽didn鈥檛 go聽out setting out to聽do聽what I聽didn鈥檛 go聽out to. Do聽you ou聽follow me? To聽become an聽entrepreneur聽鈥 that wasn鈥檛 even in聽my聽mind. I聽was just doing some talking to聽Bob. It聽just showed up. That鈥檚 what happens when I聽say it聽comes to聽you, and聽it聽comes to聽you. If聽you鈥檙e awake, you understand, I聽was awake in聽that conversation with Bob, my聽entire being was in聽that conversation with Bob.
Jesse: And you obviously ended it聽with a聽beginner鈥檚 mind too. It聽was built in.
Michael: I聽didn鈥檛 know anything about this.That鈥檚 how I聽started everything. I聽don鈥檛 know anything about this. 聭So what?聮聽鈥 he聽says that鈥檚 a聽blessing. Better you don鈥檛 know anything about this than you do, because if聽you do聽that immediately shapes the聽beginning of聽your enterprise, and聽it聽shapes it聽in聽a聽way that will never turn in聽much you鈥檙e lucky you understand? It聽wasn鈥檛 luck that I聽showed up聽at聽Bob鈥檚. It聽was something completely different that I聽could call a聽destiny. It鈥檚 been my聽life鈥檚 work. I聽could call it聽destiny. We鈥檝e sold millions, upon millions, upon millions of聽these
Richard: One of聽the聽things that are, I聽mean, I聽could talk to聽you for聽days on聽that, it鈥檚 like to聽try to聽get on聽to聽one other two other quick things. But thank you so聽much, that obviously, we鈥檙e going to聽give people a聽chance to聽get to聽know you more and聽where they should go聽to聽learn more about what you are doing these days. So聽we鈥檒l definitely be聽covering that before it鈥檚 over. One of聽the聽things I聽keep hearing you mention all the聽time is, you know, as聽Jesse pointed out聽鈥 work on聽your business, not in聽your business. And one of聽the聽ingredients in聽that based on聽your books, that I鈥檝e read and聽communicating with you as聽well, it聽comes to聽your other phrase of: 聭How to聽go聽from a聽company of聽one to聽a聽company of聽1000.聮 And so, let鈥檚 just break it聽down to聽something, it鈥檚 not that simple but let鈥檚 try. Your first hire, your first hire, your company of聽the聽one you go聽into a聽company of聽two. In聽most cases, and聽I聽know it鈥檚 a聽little different with
Michael: Both are true. It鈥檚 universal. It聽starts with this story. So聽in聽our case, we聽told a聽story, and聽we聽told it聽we聽told the聽story at聽our case at聽the聽Michael Thomas corporation when we聽did our first hire, and聽our first hire is聽to聽explain who we聽are and聽what we聽do. And so聽that explanation I聽gave, and聽it聽was scripted, and聽I聽memorized it. Now you understand I聽didn鈥檛 really have to聽memorize it聽because I聽invented it, I聽created it, and聽I聽told it聽every single day, because I聽told that every single day when I聽was calling on聽a聽small business owner 聭I聽am聽Michael Gerber you don鈥檛 know me, but I鈥檓 the聽founder of聽the聽Michael Thomas corporation, and聽we鈥檙e about to聽change your life. Now bear with me. It鈥檚 only going to聽take about two minutes, but in聽two minutes I聽promise you, I聽will change your life completely. All I鈥檓 going to聽do聽is聽to聽ask you to聽take out your calendar and聽let鈥檚 find a聽date free for聽you to聽come to聽the聽most important business development seminar you have ever been to. It鈥檚 called 聭Key frustrations in聽a聽small and聽growing business, and聽what to聽do聽about them.聮 It鈥檚 three hours long. I鈥檓 delivering it. If聽you鈥檙e not right, you鈥檒l leave in聽the聽first 10聽minutes. If聽you are right and聽99聽percent of聽the聽people who come to聽that seminar are spellbound by聽the聽time, it鈥檚 done. You鈥檒l see why this call was the聽most important call of聽your life and聽your business, so聽let鈥檚 see your calendar.聮
Richard: That鈥檚 beautiful. I聽see how it聽ties in聽with the聽dream too because if聽you have the聽dream and聽the聽wise bigger than you, and聽now it鈥檚 easier for聽your employees to聽buy into the聽big dream, the聽employees or聽hires because, it聽seems so聽obvious in聽hindsight looking back, but if聽it鈥檚 because鈥.
Michael: Google started an聽ice cream shop above an聽ice cream shop in聽Palo Alto their first office was a聽little one room above an聽ice cream shop in聽Palo Alto. Google started in聽an聽ice cream shop. Google聽鈥 you understand one of聽the聽wealthiest companies in聽the聽world, if聽not the聽wealthiest company in聽the聽world started a聽couple of聽guys above an聽ice cream shop. But what started it聽was a聽dream, and聽that was it聽was going to聽provide the聽most important information about everything to聽everybody.
Jesse: The funniest part about you bringing this up聽is聽I聽remember the聽day that聽鈥 do聽you remember the聽day Google actually went live? I聽remember seeing it. I聽remember seeing it聽might not be聽the聽exact day but it聽was the聽antithesis of聽every other search engine every other search engine had all these things everywhere all over it聽was just clouded and聽so聽confusing. And this when you went to聽it, and聽it聽was a聽just blank page like a聽beginner鈥檚 mind back to聽your what鈥檚 your dream you know typing what you want here in聽this little box. And we鈥檒l give you the聽most relevant stuff back, and聽everyone just made fun of聽that. I聽mean they made so聽much fun. Look at聽this ugly thing, but that 聭Why?聮 was so聽big and聽they stayed so聽true to聽it.
Michael: You got it. You got it. The story is聽everything. So聽understand when I聽say this the聽story is聽everything. It鈥檚 not just a聽piece of聽it. It鈥檚 not a聽piece of聽the聽business development puzzle. It鈥檚 the聽heart of聽it.
Richard: And the聽continuation of聽that story.
Michael: It聽drives everything.
Richard: Yeah. So聽now I聽understand, back to聽the聽question your first hire when you say it鈥檚 both his first hire has to聽be聽someone that can continue to聽tell the聽story slightly different in聽a聽business way.
Michael: We鈥檝e got a聽receptionist for聽our first hire. And we聽ran an聽ad聽in聽the聽newspaper, and聽we聽did a聽hire, invited them to聽a聽hiring seminar, and聽that first seminar for聽a聽receptionist had about 42聽women and聽a聽couple of聽men in聽it. All in聽the聽seminar. So聽now we鈥檙e telling a聽story to聽42聽people, we鈥檙e not telling his story across a聽desk from an聽applicant looking at聽a聽resume. I聽didn鈥檛 give a聽shit about a聽resume. All I聽cared about was our resume. She鈥檚 not here to聽tell me聽about her. She鈥檚 here to聽hear about me. So聽who are you, what do聽you do, why is聽it聽important and聽why should you be聽spending the聽next 30聽minutes of聽my聽life to聽listen to聽it. You follow me? That was how we聽found our first receptionist. She was one of聽the聽42. So聽then Tom and聽I聽interviewed each of聽the聽42. At聽the聽end of聽the聽30聽minutes, we聽would say 聭Now, if聽that sounds like something you鈥檙e absolutely hungry for, say yes. If聽not we聽want to聽thank you for聽coming in. Take care. You鈥檝e heard our story. I鈥檓 sure you鈥檒l hear it聽again because we鈥檙e going to聽be聽everywhere.聮 And so聽many of聽them raised their hands, and聽everybody else sort of聽wandered off, wandered off. And of聽the聽people who raised that now we鈥檝e been doing this for聽40聽years.
Richard: I聽think I聽think Paizo stole something from you. Do聽you know that he聽actually I聽don鈥檛 know the聽exact number, but it鈥檚 somewhere between three and聽five thousand dollars? They鈥檒l pay you to聽not work for聽him if聽you get far enough down the聽process they鈥檒l literally pay you do聽not work for聽them because they know you don鈥檛 believe in聽this story if聽you鈥檙e taking that money.
Michael: Yeah yeah. And of聽course, so聽you understand my聽point. My聽point is聽the聽story is聽everything. That鈥檚 sort of聽everything, and聽this is聽not market speak. You understand this is聽not sales speak. This is聽consciousness speak. That鈥檚 how deeply invested in聽the聽Michael Thomas Business Development Program we聽were is聽deeply invested, we聽were in聽the聽company the聽Michael Thomas corporation. This is聽how deeply invested in聽transforming the聽state of聽small business worldwide, do聽you understand, the聽economic reality of聽the聽world depends upon small business. And small businesses suffer, suffer, suffers from that. One the聽year 2010, there were 497,000聽companies started and聽or聽of聽593,000聽that went out of聽business in聽that same year. You take that number, and聽you follow that number, and聽you鈥檙e going to聽see it鈥檚 the聽same, it鈥檚 the聽same, it鈥檚 the聽same more businesses fail than are started. And 99聽percent of聽the聽businesses that have started fail. So聽why? I鈥檓 saying they don鈥檛 have a聽story. you follow me? They don鈥檛 have a聽story.
Richard: So聽this is聽actually bringing me聽to聽a聽few things. One of聽which is聽we鈥檙e definitely going to聽have to聽have Michael back on. Not that it鈥檚 over yet, but we鈥檙e definitely going to聽have to聽have him back on聽because one of聽the聽things as聽a聽storyteller myself that I聽feel compelled to聽help these business owners with is聽(you鈥檝e heard me聽mention when we聽talked online you know I鈥檓 holding up聽a聽cell phone right now) and聽the聽opportunity is聽also the聽obstacle. There are all these other storytellers that are trying to聽jump in聽on聽Facebook, on聽Instagram, all these different places.
Michael: But they鈥檙e terrible stories.
Richard: Of聽course. Yeah no聽most of聽them are. No, I聽completely agree. That鈥檚 why I聽said we鈥檒l eventually go聽back. But here鈥檚 one question I聽have for聽you when it聽comes to聽that.
Michael: Let me聽finish that point.
Richard: OK.
Michael: There鈥檝e terrible stories because they鈥檙e made to聽sell. They鈥檙e not made out of聽meaning they don鈥檛 believe them do, you understand? They don鈥檛 believe them. Steve Jobs believed that, he聽told his story in聽the聽first Super Bowl that Apple ran their first commercial when you remember that? I聽mean David and聽Goliath. I聽mean IBM and聽Apple. Tiny, tiny, tiny little Apple. Everybody loved that story. What a聽powerful聽鈥 it聽lived at聽the聽heart of聽Apple forever. And I鈥檓 going to聽say until Steve Jobs left.
Richard: I聽have to聽agree even though I聽am聽a聽huge Apple fanboy. Everything changed that I鈥檝e experienced since then. But that鈥檚 a聽whole nother story. So聽here鈥檚 a聽question. The business they鈥檝e worked on聽their dream they have their Why they know their stories, so聽they know when these obstacles hit they don鈥檛 even seem sometimes like obstacles to聽those people they鈥檙e temporary bumps in聽the聽road to聽some degree, because they鈥檙e there, let鈥檚 just say binders aren鈥檛 the聽right word but the聽blinkers for聽the聽horse or聽whatever. You know because they鈥檙e super focused. And so聽now they鈥檝e started they鈥檝e got their first hire, their first hire is聽someone that鈥檚 going to聽be聽telling the聽story, good, and聽I鈥檓 assuming every hire they鈥檙e after should be聽there telling the聽story.
Michael: The can tell a聽story, but more importantly, they鈥檙e being the聽story.
Richard: Perfect. So聽then it鈥檚 perfect. So聽and聽now all of聽a聽sudden maybe this business finds itself plateauing at聽one point because like you said your businesses evolve over time and聽it聽kind of聽it聽creates itself along with you, sounds like it鈥檚 a聽bit of聽a聽
Michael: First of聽all you鈥檙e speaking about a聽hypothetical that doesn鈥檛 exist. That is聽we鈥檙e assuring them that the聽company we鈥檙e talking about that鈥檚 reached a聽plateau has a聽story. They鈥檝e done that work. They found their dream but you left out that they found their vision and聽you left out that they鈥檝e found their purpose, and聽you left out that they found their mission and聽you left out that they then went to聽work on聽the聽job which is聽the聽client fulfillment system to聽organize their client fulfillment system to聽deliver a聽profound positive impact that is聽literally alive with the聽dream, the聽vision, the聽purpose, and聽the聽mission.
Richard: You gave me聽an聽easy answer, so聽if聽you find yourself plateauing go聽back to聽the聽beginning.
Michael: First of聽all, you always go聽back to聽the聽beginning. That first always goes back to聽the聽beginning and聽what you鈥檒l discover is聽we聽have a聽system, and聽we鈥檙e not using it, or聽we聽don鈥檛 have a聽system, and聽we鈥檙e making it聽up聽as聽we聽go聽or, or. And a聽whole subset of聽other possibilities. But you understand there鈥檚 a聽process for聽all this. So聽the聽thing that we聽have learned over all these years these 40聽plus years now is聽that there鈥檚 a聽process and聽the聽process is聽a聽religion. I聽mean you believe in聽the聽process we聽call it聽the聽聭eightfold path.聮.
Jesse: Speaking of聽let鈥檚 just let you have the聽rest of聽this time, let鈥檚 start with New Beginnings we鈥檙e coming up. We鈥檝e got about
Michael: Wonderful, thank you. We聽came to聽the聽realization that my聽80th birthday. Dahlia always celebrates my聽birthdays and聽the聽most outrageous ways. I聽think we聽have about 70,000聽people on聽the聽80th birthday and聽that was online. We聽had about 220聽of聽them live. And Dahlia` fooled me聽into speaking, she told me聽it聽was a聽speaking gig and聽it聽was a聽gig, I聽knew the聽business and聽I聽knew the聽place.
So聽I聽went there and聽got up聽to聽speak, and聽I聽did my聽
Richard: Something fishy, something strange here.
Michael: But at聽that birthday we聽made the聽commitment that we聽have so聽much time and聽what we聽have created while it鈥檚 spectacular and聽while it聽truly transforms the聽lives of聽literally millions of聽small business owners throughout the聽world. Now in聽145聽countries, we聽haven鈥檛 really done it. We鈥檝e done it聽for聽individuals, but we聽haven鈥檛 done it聽for聽the聽world of聽small business which is聽what I聽set out to聽do聽in聽nineteen
Now understand when I聽say new entrepreneurs I聽mean every person who鈥檚 inclined to聽start a聽small business or聽already has started a聽small business. Inclined to聽start a聽small business聽鈥 for聽whatever reason they have thought to聽create a聽small business or聽has already started a聽small business and聽is聽finding themselves stuck as聽you were describing earlier.
How to聽engage those people in聽the聽process? Well, we聽created the聽Eightfold Path to聽do聽that, and聽we聽called it聽聭From a聽company of聽one to聽a聽company of聽1000. The evolution of聽an聽enterprise.聮 Because in聽fact, every single job on聽the聽planet is聽an聽enterprise in聽the聽making. If聽I聽was a聽painter painting the聽house that job is聽an聽enterprise waiting to聽happen. If聽I聽was a聽dog walker meaning, I鈥檓 making a聽living walking somebody dogs, and聽there are lots of聽people doing that, and聽you wouldn鈥檛 believe it, it鈥檚 a聽billion dollar business today. Think about that. A聽billion dollar business today walking dogs. So聽what we聽had to聽do聽is聽to聽make a聽list of聽every job on聽the聽planet. And then invite every single human being on聽the聽planet to聽transform their lives by聽awakening the聽New Entrepreneur within them to聽transform the聽lives of聽everybody else. And to聽do聽that by聽creating a聽company of聽one and聽growing it聽to聽a聽company of聽1000聽and聽that is聽built upon what I鈥檝e just spoken about the聽Eightfold Path. And it聽starts online, and聽it鈥檚 very straightforward:
- I聽have a聽dream
- I聽have a聽vision
- I聽have a聽purpose
- I聽have a聽mission
- I聽have a聽job
- I聽have a聽practice
- I聽have a聽business
- I聽have an聽enterprise.
And the聽process online of聽doing that. So聽radically you is聽a聽series of聽sessions. One each week 52聽sessions a聽year. All video sessions delivered by聽a聽radical teacher. And that radical teacher is聽that kid that I聽was talking about. A聽spectacular kid spectacular person who truly is聽invested in聽our story and聽then the聽story of聽the聽lives of聽every student who鈥檚 called to聽us聽and聽she learns and聽delivers our script. To聽understand our script, it鈥檚 the聽script for聽discovering your dream. Step 1,聽step 2,聽step 3,聽step 4,聽step 6,聽7,聽8聽for聽discovering your vision. Step 1,聽step 2聽through 8聽discovering your purpose your dream, the聽great result you intend to聽produce. So聽if聽I聽were to聽say to聽you, what does the聽great result you intend to聽produce through the聽company you鈥檝e got. You would have to聽go聽inside and聽find that and聽where would you find that you鈥檇 find in聽two places one inside you, what you鈥檙e called to聽do聽and聽outside you when you鈥檙e thinking of聽your most important customer. And when you think about your most important customer, you have to聽understand what is聽keeping that person from being who they truly are called to聽be. What鈥檚 missing in聽this picture.
So聽Radical You, it鈥檚 a聽stunning reality that was launched on聽March 4th, my聽wife鈥檚 birthday, 2018. And we聽have not begun to聽enroll people in聽it. We聽only have 100聽faithful students today, but by聽the聽time we鈥檙e done, five years from today, there will be聽5聽million students learning how to聽grow, to聽grow, to聽grow, be聽under their comfort zone. Here I聽will be聽under their comfort zone be聽on聽what makes them feel good about themselves to聽the聽point where there鈥檚 someone they鈥檝e never met before. And the聽beauty of聽it聽all is聽everybody can afford it. The Dreaming room tuition for聽a聽year. Our entrepreneurial development school is聽only $479聽and聽40聽cents for聽whole year of聽tuition.
Richard: I聽love it! We鈥檙e closing up聽on聽time here, and聽the聽place that I聽have here from your lovely wife that鈥檚 for聽people to聽go聽to聽learn more is聽Radical You. That鈥檚 just u/invite, and聽there鈥檚 I鈥檓 not 100聽percent mistaken. There鈥檚 there鈥檚 a聽process that you鈥檒l go聽through I鈥檓 sure to聽some degree, all of聽which they鈥檒l get to聽learn more about you. But thank you so聽much for聽all your time and聽your wisdom and聽even the聽way you explain at聽the聽end, there鈥檚 nobility in聽every job, and聽you can grow into something great.
Jesse: Awesome. Thank you, thank you for聽Michael Gerber for聽being with us. Really appreciate it.
Michael: Thanks Jesse, thanks, Rich.
