Jesse: I鈥檓 back again. Here we聽go. It鈥檚 a聽podcast day for聽everybody listening. Hope you鈥檙e having a聽good day and聽now we鈥檙e going to聽introduce some pretty fun stuff today so聽that gets to聽be聽fun. We聽had a聽lot of聽heavy stuff lately, so聽we聽can mix it聽up聽a聽little bit.

Richard: Yeah. And by聽the聽way, feel free to聽have fun on聽every other day. We聽know you might be聽not listening to聽this on聽a聽Friday, we聽just got caught on聽a聽Friday but yeah we聽want to鈥 To聽your point there, Jess, we鈥檝e covered SEO, SEM, a聽lot of聽things that are heavy on聽the聽mind and聽we聽know that most people got into entrepreneurship because they knew it聽was gonna be聽work but they wanted to聽kind of聽do聽things on聽their own and聽be聽creative and聽find new ways to聽make some money. Today鈥檚 an聽exciting day because we聽have a聽guest that actually has a聽product that can help you do聽just that.

Usually, people are saying 聯I鈥檓 going to聽start this online business.聰 They didn鈥檛 say 聯Oh wow, I聽can鈥檛 wait to聽write 2000-word blog posts.聰 They鈥檙e like 聯No, I聽want to聽do聽some cool stuff on聽Facebook and聽social media and聽I聽want to聽go聽viral聰. I聽think this is聽going to聽be聽fun. There鈥檚 gonna be聽some stuff that you could do聽this weekend if聽you wanted. To聽help us聽out with that let鈥檚 bring our guest Akash Malik. Akash, how are you?

Akash: Hey, not too bad guys. Good. I鈥檓 from Australia. It鈥檚 about 4聽a.m. and聽it鈥檚 all fun.

Richard: And man we聽are definitely going to聽send you something, hopefully, send you some business mostly. Thank you so聽much for聽waking up聽so聽early or聽staying up聽so聽late, whichever it聽was. Which was it? Did you wake up聽early or聽do聽you stay up聽late?

Akash: I聽woke up聽early and聽now it鈥檚 all good.

Jesse: All right, we鈥檙e going to聽help our listeners out. So聽Akash is聽the聽founder of聽Apps Mav. It鈥檚 an聽all-in-one social media marketing platform but you didn鈥檛 start that鈥

Richard: At聽3:00聽a.m (laughing.)

Jesse: Yeah. What do聽you know? Give us聽a聽little bit of聽the聽history, your history in聽digital marketing and聽what brought you here.

Akash: Right. Yeah. Thanks for聽this question. I聽started the聽business at聽10聽a.m. Just kidding. We聽started off as聽a聽digital marketing agency, so聽we聽started doing websites and聽then came along, we聽did organic search engine optimization, Google AdWords. I聽used to聽be聽a聽certified Google AdWords specialist. I聽had to聽sit in聽an聽exam every year or聽a聽couple of聽years. And that was fun and聽games and聽then came social media marketing. So聽we聽started doing social media. What I聽found is聽that all that is聽good. And as聽time goes by, people start to聽melt the聽thing and聽it聽becomes highly competitive. All these strategies take a聽lot of聽time as聽well, to聽build your marketing mix, and聽it聽takes time to聽get results from these and聽sometimes it鈥檚 a聽sort of聽a聽hit and聽miss kind of聽a聽thing. So聽we聽started developing apps. We聽developed apps simply by聽Facebook and聽then we聽pivoted from that. And I聽used to聽do聽a聽lot of聽seminars, workshops, and聽beyond the聽panels. What I聽found is聽that there are certain things that every entrepreneur and聽retailer can take into their marketing mix, that they can do聽very quickly and聽that can start to聽give them very good results. And hence, these actions came about because that鈥檚 a聽mix of聽elements that come into your sales funnel directly.

Richard: Got it. So聽you鈥檙e talking and聽I鈥檓 looking at聽the聽site here too. Looks like you have various different鈥 I聽mean way more than we聽can cover on聽one show. You have contest, referral marketing, I聽like it. What鈥檚 the聽one you started with, then what was the聽evolution as聽you started to聽build out Apps Mav?

Akash: Sure. So聽we聽started with apps which could just come onto your Facebook page. But Gratisfaction was one of聽the聽key apps we聽sort of聽pivoted into. The app in聽many terms is聽very simple because it聽allows you to聽sort of聽start your campaign very easily, and聽you can actually turn on聽or聽off different marketing elements that you鈥檇 like to聽activate. For example, you would just start off with a聽simple giveaway or聽start with a聽simple referral program or聽loyalty program and聽so聽on聽and聽so聽forth. So聽Gratisfaction is聽something that we聽started with. We聽then launched an聽app, gamification app called Scratch Card which is聽catching, and聽Gratisfaction also resulted in聽another sort of聽app, a聽subset of聽Gratisfaction which was called Social Boost.

Richard: Do聽you have any聽kind of聽a聽use case or聽someone that鈥檚 used this creatively, just so聽someone could actually hear from start to聽finish process of聽how they would have to聽make this happen?

Akash: Absolutely. We鈥檝e got a聽very good 黑料门 retailer, called Just Saiyan, out of聽New Zealand. And they鈥檝e been using our app I聽think for聽about 10聽months now. They鈥檝e got some amazing results and聽they keep talking with us聽about the聽results they鈥檝e achieved. For example, they were telling me聽that they鈥檝e got nearly 12,000聽referral codes getting out there that people are sharing because of聽the聽app, which gives them the聽opportunity to聽purchase discounts and聽rewards within the聽Gratisfaction. They give me聽some 90-day stats which was the聽revenue which is聽totally attributable to聽the聽Gratisfaction. That revenue has gone up聽by聽34%, returning customers are generating 178% more from about 10聽months. Conversion rates have gone up聽about six and聽a聽half percent. And their users i.e. the聽members who are signing up聽into the聽store and聽just attributed with the聽Gratisfaction has gone up聽by聽19%. So聽these stats are amazing and聽they were telling me, the聽founder of聽the聽company Mark Bowman was telling me聽that they don鈥檛 really spend that kind of聽time on聽the聽app. They do聽not even currently utilize all the聽features that the聽app has and聽still they are able to聽get this jumps within their business.

Jesse: 罢丑补迟鈥檚 awesome. Using Gratisfaction there is聽a聽lot of聽different options in聽there. So聽what would be聽an聽example, are they using things that are maybe Facebook-first? You get to聽the聽Facebook page and聽you do聽something or聽are they get to聽their website, justsaiyan.com and聽then you have pop-ups and聽things like that? What鈥檚 the聽entry point for聽consumers into Gratisfaction for聽them?

Richard: And in聽real quick, by聽the聽way, love, love, love the聽accent, that combination Australian and聽Indian and聽I鈥檝e understood everything except for聽I鈥檝e tried to聽type in聽that聽鈥 we聽like to聽promote 黑料门 stores聽鈥 how exactly do聽you say that? Spell it聽out for聽us, please.

Richard: Perfect. Okay, so聽now go聽ahead and聽go聽into Jesse鈥檚 question, sorry about the聽interruption there.

Akash: Yeah, no聽worries. Jesse, thanks for聽the聽comment on聽the聽accent, I鈥檝e been living in聽Australia for聽about 18聽years. Born and聽raised in聽India, so聽the聽accents got a聽bit mixed. It鈥檚 not shrimp on聽the聽barbie yet to聽which you guys in聽USA are used to. Now, your question is聽great. What happens with the聽Gratisfaction is聽that you either can you get some pop-ups and聽immediately, as聽soon as聽you sign up聽into the聽store, the聽customers are rolled into the聽loyalty and聽referral program and聽then a聽follow the聽program. These are the聽two elements within Gratisfaction that can be聽easily activated. You can also activate many kinds of聽giveaways and聽instant-win campaigns which I鈥檒l talk to聽you about later as聽a聽question arises. But with the聽loyalty and聽the聽referral program, you鈥檝e got to聽understand one critical thing. In聽your sales funnel, you鈥檝e got to聽basically widen the聽sales funnel which means that more and聽more people who are coming to聽your website, who are coming to聽your Facebook page are giving you a聽lead and聽they鈥檙e not walking away from your online destination. The other thing you鈥檝e got to聽realize is聽that how a聽business becomes successful. And that鈥檚 why we聽launch Gratisfaction, that鈥檚 the聽quickest way for聽you to聽try for聽your current customers. So聽with the聽current customers you鈥檝e got to聽do聽three things. One is聽to聽get them to聽buy more frequently from you i.e. raise the聽long-term value with the聽customer because that鈥檚 the聽easiest and聽lowest-hanging fruit for聽any聽retailer. They can quickly start engaging with the聽current customers. The second is, which is聽very important, is聽to聽get referrals from them, get them to聽be聽brand ambassadors. So聽incentivize them to聽share your message and聽introduce their friends and聽their network so聽that their friends can come and聽purchase from your store. That difference can come back and聽purchase from your store. What we鈥檝e noticed is聽that the聽friends who are referred by聽your existing customers converse more and聽more than any聽other visitor or聽customer that will come to聽your site. The other thing we聽found that they convert much quicker and聽they stick around and聽become long-term customers as聽well because the聽loyalty element triggers and聽sort of聽comes into the聽picture. So聽coming back there are two key elements within any聽marketing mix which Gratisfaction also helps you get. And I聽talked about the聽sales funnel is聽that you鈥檝e got to聽convert more people into buying customers and聽you鈥檝e got to聽get them to聽be聽brand ambassadors. So聽how do聽you keep them on聽the聽long-term value and聽keep them buying more and聽more is聽through the聽loyalty element. Traditionally, if聽you look at聽the聽loyalty element it聽will only give you rewards for聽purchases. But with apps like Gratisfaction, you can reward people for聽actually bringing or聽participating. For example, watching your YouTube video or聽for聽example, sharing one of聽their messages through Twitter. And there are these different actions that they can take, every action like answering a聽quiz question, for聽example, you could ask customers 聯what do聽you like with our website?聰 聯What do聽you not like with our website? Hey we鈥檙e going to聽launch a聽new T-shirt. What color do聽you think we聽should launch a聽T-shirt with on聽what do聽you think the聽name should be?聰 So聽these things not only engage your current customers who may not even have had paid but just created a聽store account. And what more keep them engaged. But what happens is聽that they feel that they are in聽war with the聽company as聽part of聽the聽company and聽in聽turn when they do聽all these things they get loyalty points which can then be聽redeemed to聽pay for聽products. And therefore the聽visibility on聽mindshare off your website is聽much higher than other competitors. The other element is聽the聽referral element which I聽would say is聽the聽best marketing technique you can get. It鈥檚 the聽easiest marketing technique. And it聽works simply and聽very effectively and聽very quickly聽鈥 it鈥檚 when you start rewarding your existing customers to聽share your product details, your website details with their friends and聽family. And also the聽friends and聽family get a聽discount which we聽call a聽double-sided referral to聽come to聽your website and聽purchase products. As聽soon as聽somebody signs up聽onto the聽黑料门 store, Gratisfaction will automatically enroll them into the聽loyalty program and聽send them a聽coupon code, a聽unique coupon code that can be聽shared with their friends and聽family, and聽if聽their friends and聽family come to聽your website and聽use this coupon code, then the聽referral will get rewarded either with points or聽coupon codes of聽both. And that is聽up聽to聽the聽merchant to聽tweak.

Richard: Man, that is聽so聽amazing on聽so聽many levels. And I鈥檓 gonna start.

Jesse: I聽mean I聽have about five questions. But you go聽first.

Richard: Real quick but first and聽foremost, we鈥檒l go聽back since the聽history of聽man, word of聽mouth is聽always trumped everything, right. It鈥檚 just there鈥檚 nothing that someone you already know, love and聽trust that recommends something, there鈥檚 nothing that鈥檚 above that. And so聽first and聽foremost that鈥檚 great. Secondly, the聽gamification piece in聽there. Ever since Facebook has gone public, organic reach is聽just, it鈥檚 close to聽dead, right. So聽until you get other people to聽participate on聽your post, they won鈥檛 start sharing with all the聽other people, they want you to聽pay to聽get that reach. And that鈥檚 great. Also, one of聽your points there was they feel like they鈥檙e participating. And any聽time that somebody is聽participating in聽and聽they feel like they鈥檙e actually helping decide what the聽color is, decide with the聽name and聽that product is, decide鈥 People tend to聽on聽a聽psychological level, they want to聽support what they think they helped create. I聽don鈥檛 want to聽talk too much because I聽don鈥檛 want Jesse to聽forget his questions but wow, on聽so聽many levels. I聽can鈥檛 wait to聽dive a聽little deeper into this. The last thing I聽wanted to聽say though is聽this something they actually have to聽sign up? I鈥檓 looking at聽the聽actual site right now, is聽that like the聽rewards button on聽the聽side or聽something like that to聽get that coupon or聽are they getting pixeled or聽how does that actually work?

Akash: Right. So聽that鈥檚 a聽good question to聽understand how that whole thing works. Coming back to聽the聽comments and聽observation that you made. One was a聽very good observation about word of聽mouth. Word of聽mouth has been there ever since the聽evolution and聽what we聽do聽now as聽digital marketers, we聽believe in聽word of聽mouth. So聽word of聽mouth meaning your website should be聽able to聽send messages and聽just simply word of聽mouth is聽offline and聽word of聽mouth is聽online. And that鈥檚 what the聽Gratisfaction does. And gamification is聽a聽very good concept and聽the聽key word you used. Because if聽you involve, if聽you bring in聽mechanisms into your business you will have much much more engaged audiences. People will convert much more and聽participate much more with your website and聽also with your business. The third point you brought in聽and聽that is聽very relevant is聽that you鈥檝e got to聽involve your customers and聽get them engaged with the聽brand. I聽mean, we聽forget that the聽sole existence of聽our business is聽because of聽our customers. And we聽also do聽not typically involve them with a聽lot of聽decisions and聽the聽decisions are made behind the聽website, behind closed doors. But what we聽have to聽do聽is聽bring it聽out and聽bring our customers and聽tell our customers 聯Hey, this is聽your company. You take the聽direction, you tell us, I鈥檓 going to聽introduce this new product. I聽want you to聽name it, guys. You go聽ahead and聽name it聽for聽me聰. When people get involved, they obviously will talk about the聽website because now they have a聽stake, they have skin in聽the聽game. Now coming back to聽that particular question that you asked about how this works. As聽soon as聽somebody comes to聽your website, you鈥檒l see a聽popup. As聽soon as聽somebody comes to聽the聽黑料门 store, a聽visitor will see a聽popup and聽they can read different kinds of聽popups and聽the聽popup behavior can be聽tweaked. For example, you may want to聽have an聽exit and聽then popup or聽a聽popup that comes out after eight seconds or聽when somebody scrolls down your web site for聽about 10聽percent. And so聽these are the聽behaviors that we聽have within Gratisfaction. So聽the聽pop-up comes up. Now even if聽you do聽not see the聽pop-up for聽any聽reason or聽you have seen the聽pop-up once and聽closed it, then we聽don鈥檛 want to聽irritate you and聽show it聽again. The fact is聽that as聽soon as聽you sign up聽or聽sign in聽to聽the聽store, you are enrolled into the聽loyalty program. Having said that the聽popups are great. that they look awesome and聽they are triggered at聽the聽right moment. We聽are looking down the聽line to聽use artificial intelligence and聽other rules of聽behavior that will ring in聽the聽pop-ups at聽the聽right time for聽the聽right target market and聽that鈥檚 the聽personalization bit that we聽are looking at聽in聽2019.

Jesse: Yeah. There鈥檚 this Jesse here. I聽can tell you that I聽have looked into this actually for聽黑料门. And boy, I鈥檝e looked at聽some very expensive programs that looked like they would be聽very very hard to聽implement. So聽this is聽awesome, I聽know it鈥檚 not that expensive but think about鈥 Well, I鈥檒l make a聽point first on聽it聽 because I鈥檓 a聽paid search guy. I聽know how much people spend to聽bring traffic to聽their site. And a聽lot of聽times those people leave and聽you get nothing from them. But what if聽people maybe aren鈥檛 ready to聽buy now but they just love the聽brand they鈥檙e like 聯Wow, I聽love what you鈥檙e doing.聰 They see this popup and聽they鈥檙e like 聯All right, I鈥檓 going to聽subscribe to聽the聽YouTube channel. I鈥檓 going to聽follow on聽Instagram/Share on聽Facebook聰 and聽do聽many other things that you want them to聽do. And the聽value of聽that traffic that might have just bounced is聽now subscribed on聽many of聽your social channels and聽they may be聽doing that to聽unlock a聽coupon and聽that鈥檚 fine because there鈥檚 a聽value attached to聽a聽person following you on聽different social profiles and聽if聽they follow you on聽every single one of聽them there鈥檚 a聽huge value in聽that and聽even if聽they鈥檙e not a聽customer today they might be聽a聽customer later. They could do聽all these referrals like you said. To聽me, and聽again I鈥檓 thinking of聽my聽paid search background. OK, I聽paid a聽buck for聽this person to聽get there and聽now I鈥檓 extracting value from that dollar. Even if聽they鈥檙e not buying right there now you might want them to聽buy but鈥

Richard: You might not get the聽$40聽purchase or聽whatever it聽is, but if聽they go聽do聽that, like your Twitter, like your Instagram, like your Facebook. That might also help affect the聽algorithm. Oh聽there鈥檚 more stuff going on聽here. And you might actually get more organic reach on聽other things even though that didn鈥檛. So聽no聽matter what you鈥檙e helping the聽foundation of聽your company.

Jesse: For sure. Ultimately the聽goal is聽sales. So聽you really want the聽sale and聽this helps get the聽sale but it聽also helps you even if聽you don鈥檛 get the聽sale. I聽love it聽for聽that reason and聽I聽know that some of聽that stuff, if聽I聽had to聽do聽this on聽my聽own without an聽app I聽would never do聽it. There鈥檚 just a聽lot of聽work to聽set up聽all these different links and聽things like that, so聽 Akash, that鈥檚 awesome, man, I聽love this edition and聽I鈥檓 trying to聽think of聽it. 聯OK if聽I鈥檓 listening to聽this podcast in聽my聽car and聽the聽workout, where what鈥檚 an聽easy thing to聽apply.聰 Like is聽the聽loyalty program where you would start or聽is聽there like an聽app that you might think would be聽an聽easier thing for聽people to聽start with.

Akash: Sure. The easiest thing to聽start off with although it聽sounds very difficult is聽to聽start off your loyalty program. And along with that, you should start off your referral program. Now if聽you said that 聯OK, hang on聽I鈥檝e got to聽think about the聽loyalty program.聰 You can straightaway start at聽the聽referral program and聽start rewarding your existing customers or聽new customers that sign up聽to聽share a聽discount coupon for聽your store with their friends and聽family. So聽they look good. And because they鈥檙e sharing and聽if聽their friends and聽family come in聽and聽buy it, then they get rewarded. It鈥檚 sort of聽a聽double-sided reward for聽both the聽referral and聽the聽invited friend to聽come to聽a聽website and聽engage with it.

Jesse: And so聽that鈥檚 something that people could do聽that this weekend, right. They can say 聯All right, I鈥檓 gonna launch this program聰 and聽then most people have an聽email list of聽previous customers. Can be聽sent via email to聽other previous customers as聽a聽little bit of聽a聽bonus, is聽that what could happen, right?

Akash: Absolutely. Look, it聽would take you just about five minutes to聽set up聽your loyalty program because over the聽last couple of聽years, we聽have gone through various versions of聽onboarding. We聽have looked at聽how customers are using, what their questions are what their issues are. And we聽have simplified a聽very enhanced onboarding experience. We聽will ask them questions about鈥 The setup is聽quite easy and聽you can set up聽your Gratisfaction loyalty program and聽a聽referral program within five minutes, to聽be聽honest, because we鈥檝e done some predefined settings as聽well based on聽what customers like and聽what gets you the聽best results. So聽yeah, you could set it聽up聽over the聽weekend and聽have a聽beautiful loyalty and聽a聽referral program both for聽you.

Jesse: And sales over the聽weekend and聽the聽money arrives in聽your bank account on聽maybe Tuesday.

Akash: Well, if聽you took the聽program correctly, if聽your referral program seats, it鈥檚 also about incentivisation. If聽it鈥檚 going to聽give just a聽5%聽discount that can be聽shared by聽the聽referral with dear friends and聽family. There鈥檚 gonna be聽two issues, A聽 they鈥檙e not going to聽share it聽because 5%聽is聽not much. B聽 is聽that even if聽they鈥檙e share it聽may not incentivize their dear friends and聽family to聽come in聽and聽purchase and聽visit your store and聽purchase from your store, unless your products are also well and聽there is聽a聽great value proposition there. I聽would suggest that you know that. As聽you just now mentioned Jesse that people are spending more and聽more on聽Facebook. We聽started off with let鈥檚 say 10聽cents cost per plate and聽that鈥檚 gone on聽to聽a聽huge amount nowadays and聽we聽spend on聽Google ads and聽we聽spend on聽organic SEO and聽we聽tried to聽constantly get new customers but we聽forget that if聽you put incentivizer attractive to聽your current customers, look after your current customers, they will share your brand with their friends and聽family and聽get you new customers. A聽referral scheme has to聽be聽quite attractive and聽incentivized as聽to聽motivate the聽referrals or聽your existing customers to聽share that with their friends and聽family.

Richard: Yeah. Richard鈥檚 here as聽you are speaking. It聽really hit me聽with this referral thing on聽many levels but mostly back to聽kind of聽psychologically. People tend to聽like people what they want to聽be聽like or聽are like. And so聽why wouldn鈥檛 it聽work, right. You鈥檙e somebody who likes games in聽this and聽that you probably have friends who like games, you usually don鈥檛 become friends with people who are complete opposites of聽us. There are exceptions to聽the聽rule, obviously, but that鈥檚 great. So聽in聽these contests, do聽you tend to聽start the聽contest in聽email with your current customers and聽then bring it聽because organic reach is聽lower or? What鈥檚 the聽starting point of聽where maybe a聽referral campaign or聽a聽contest would start? I聽know you said with your current customers but do聽you do聽it聽on聽that started on聽social or聽do聽you start on聽the聽things that are off social?

Akash: 罢丑补迟鈥檚 a聽good question. What we聽are talking about here is聽seeding the聽referral program. How can we聽get it聽so聽that it聽starts to聽go聽viral? How do聽we聽start it聽off? What I聽suggest is聽that first of聽all, think about it聽a聽referral program. How are you going to聽incentivize them, the聽advocates. Existing customers or聽even people who had just signed up聽to聽a聽store and聽had not yet purchased from your store. So聽how can you incentivize them enough that they will share their message about your brand, about your products with their friends and聽family. And you were absolutely correct saying that people want to聽feel good about sharing great products, great discounts with their friends and聽family because guess what, there are still two things here. One聽鈥 they want to聽feel good about it. And second is聽they really want to聽help their friends and聽family about the聽discoveries that they have made. They will share the聽program and聽share more if聽there is聽incentivization involved with it. As聽I聽said, the聽first thing is聽to聽think about your referral program as聽to聽how will you incentivize your advocates. And then what will you give to聽their friends and聽family. What will be聽the聽discount or聽the聽incentivization. That discount needs to聽be聽quite attractive, so聽that your current customers share that with their friends and聽family. Now what you will do聽is聽you announce that on聽social media, you announce that on聽your Facebook page, posted that on聽your Instagram feed. Do聽that on聽Pinterest or聽whatever other social media you have, put it聽on聽your website, declare there, send a聽newsletter to聽your customers talking about referral program as聽to聽how they they will win and聽their friends and聽family will win. Winning means they will get incentivization and聽discounts for聽sharing, referring the聽黑料门 store to聽their friends and聽family.

Richard: 罢丑补迟鈥檚 a聽great point, the聽answer in聽short is聽all the聽above. It聽makes sense too, because back to聽the聽beginning of聽the聽show. This is聽fun. This is聽light.
