Show notes:

Transcript

Jesse:: Richie! Happy Friday! How are you doing?

Richard:: I鈥檓 doing great. Another Friday, another recording session. Looking sunny. I聽think for聽the聽most part.

Jesse:: Nice and聽sunny.

Richard:: The smoke from this fire is聽here.

Jesse:: By聽the聽way, I聽did rechange our release date, so聽now people are going to聽actually hear this on聽Fridays so聽they can get into the聽Friday spirit of聽聭What I聽need to聽work on聽my聽business?聮 this weekend, and聽hopefully get some tips along the聽way. We鈥檝e been talking about all sorts of聽fancy features lately, all this automated Google Shopping and聽Instagram and聽kind of聽a聽lot of聽the聽fancy stuff. I聽think today is聽a聽day to聽maybe get back to聽basics. And I鈥檓 thinking of聽this as聽a聽little bit of聽an聽SEO school day.

Richard:: I聽love it. All right.

Jesse:: Today we鈥檙e bringing in聽Alan Bush from Ignite Visibility. The reason we鈥檙e bringing in聽Allan as聽the聽SEO school day is聽because he聽teaches a聽class on聽an聽SEO at聽UCSD. What鈥檚 going on, Alan?

Alan:: What鈥檚 going on? Thanks for聽having me.

Jesse:: Yeah, absolutely.

Alan:: Great to聽be聽here. I聽love the聽studio.

Jesse:: Yeah. I聽know you鈥檙e a聽little jealous here.

Alan:: I聽was. This is聽my聽house.

Jesse:: That can be聽arranged. Do聽you have an聽extra bedroom in聽the聽studio? I聽don鈥檛 think I聽get away with that. All good.

Richard:: Spring a聽cot.

Alan:: Yeah, exactly. Exactly.

Jesse:: Well, definitely come on聽in聽anytime. This is聽our Friday recording. Can we聽call you the聽professor?

Alan:: Yeah, it鈥檚 weird because I聽do聽have people call me聽professor or聽instructor or聽聭Teacher, Teacher!聮 or聽Mr. Bush, like Professor Bush. It鈥檚 so聽strange, I鈥檓 like 聭I鈥檓 just Alan聮. OK.

Jesse:: Just a聽guy.

Alan:: Here鈥檚 the聽guy, I聽know.

Jesse:: So聽what about a聽lot of聽the聽other people listening here. They probably saw this podcast title thinking: 聭All right, SEO. I聽know I聽have to聽do聽this. I聽want to聽rank. I聽want to聽be聽on聽page one for聽Google. Every single term. What do聽I聽do?聮

Alan:: It鈥檚 now is聽as聽real estate.

Jesse:: Let鈥檚 give us聽some realistic advice here and聽things that people can apply. How do聽you start off your classes?

Alan:: It聽really starts with educating people on聽what SEO is聽of聽course. Search Engine Optimization is聽basically free quote-unquote free traffic that when people do聽a聽search they鈥檙e finding your website, and聽they鈥檙e gonna make a聽purchase hopefully. But a聽lot of聽people think that they need to聽rank for聽the聽top term. Back in聽the聽day, was all about ranking for聽the聽thing you鈥檙e selling and聽that鈥檚 it. And you win off of聽two or聽three different terms but that鈥檚 not the聽case anymore because now there are so聽many different ways of聽digesting content, digesting information, asking questions. It鈥檚 not just about ranking for聽one term but a聽myriad of聽terms that you really want to聽be聽a聽part of. So聽I聽think that people need to聽refocus their energies and聽provide value and聽become thought leaders in聽whatever it聽is聽that they鈥檙e selling.

Jesse:: Thought leaders is聽a聽big word though. You know like 聭What if聽I聽just want to聽sell some stuff here聮 (laughing.)

Richard:: So聽let鈥檚 let鈥檚 break that one down too because 聭thought leader聮 even gets thrown around.

Alan:: It聽does. So聽many people talking about it.

Richard:: Really what you鈥檙e referring to聽at聽its basic level because I聽get the聽joke Jesse saying here. But it鈥檚 basic level. Thought leadership is聽just creating content of聽which you show your thinking about this subject. Hence thought. And you鈥檙e putting something down. Trying to聽lead some sort of聽belief or聽idea or聽education or聽whatever depending on聽what you鈥檙e doing.

Alan:: Yeah, but my聽biggest thing is聽that if聽you listen to聽Simon Sinek 聭The Power of聽聭Why?聮 That changed 100% how I聽think of聽what SEO is聽what marketing is聽in聽general because he聽gives the聽example of鈥 and聽I聽advise anybody should listen to聽Simon鈥檚 lesson 聭The Power of聽聭Why?聮

Richard:: We鈥檒l put a聽link on聽the聽blog.

Alan:: Yeah that鈥檇 be聽great. Yeah. Because I鈥檓 not gonna work for聽the聽guy you know, it鈥檚 just good. This is聽something that just changed my聽thinking. So聽I鈥檓 basically saying people will follow you. They don鈥檛 necessarily want to聽just buy your product, they follow your belief system. They鈥檙e willing to鈥 I聽use Apple as聽an聽example. They sell an聽idea rather than sell a聽product so聽you try to聽buy it聽out. I鈥檓 kind of聽paraphrasing but you almost think it鈥檚 absurd to聽buy a聽music device from Dell for聽example. Because they鈥檙e a聽computer company. But in聽reality, we聽buy that type of聽stuff because we鈥檙e comfortable with the聽way Apple sells their messaging. So聽we鈥檙e willing to聽buy almost anything from iPhone or聽buy up聽the聽music device or聽buy a聽computer or聽buy a聽monitor. You know all those devices. A聽watch! It鈥檚 from Apple. Yeah because we聽believe in聽their products and聽believe in聽their belief system and聽not just their products. So聽I聽think it鈥檚 important that people convey that they believe what their consumers believe and聽they get them to聽be聽on聽border-related to聽that and聽that will help drive your SEO. Trust me聽because people are really more about the聽types of聽content that you put out there will be聽more related to聽how you believe and聽then rather than just selling your product.

Richard:: Sure some people sadly enough believe it聽as聽deep as聽I聽do聽that they even keep their boxes. I聽still have all my聽Apple product boxes. That鈥檚 the聽only product I聽buy that I聽still have a聽box. It鈥檚 just something stuck in聽my聽soul.

Alan:: Yeah, I聽need that logo in聽front of聽me聽all the聽time.

Jesse:: That鈥檚 weird. That鈥檚 weird, man. You should just throw boxes away.

Richard:: Notice that next time you buy a聽new phone. Open that box and聽tell me聽you鈥檙e not impressed.

Jesse:: Yeah. It聽is聽impressive. And people make videos about it聽(laughing.) So聽for聽somebody that wants to聽be聽a聽thought leadership, a聽thought leader in聽their niche, right. I聽think that鈥檚 a聽good way to聽think about it聽because being a聽thought leader also allows you to聽figure out 聭All right, what the聽heck am聽I聽gonna write about?聮 You know like taking it聽down to聽the聽basic level is聽聭All right. I聽have this product, everybody鈥檚 told me聽to聽watch this some cynic and聽be聽a聽thought leader. What鈥檚 the聽first step? You know what do聽I聽write about? Actually, we聽had some very cool ladies on聽the聽last pod. So聽if聽you鈥檙e listening there is聽an聽order. I鈥檓 trying to聽think of聽advice that we聽would give them specifically. They sell glasses, it鈥檚 like reading glasses but it聽only has one side so聽they can put on聽makeup. If聽you want to聽put on聽makeup and聽you want to聽do聽your eyes and聽stuff you get this little glass that you can flip over.

Alan:: How funny.

Richard:: Yeah, but here鈥檚 what鈥 Just because I聽want to聽tack on聽to聽what he聽said. The fundamental thing is聽we聽came to聽realize that no聽one knows about this product yet. So聽fundamentally, what would they do聽for聽creating thought leadership and聽search terms when nobody knows? They need to聽be聽educated first.

Alan:: And that鈥檚 exactly it. You have to聽educate the聽public what鈥檚 the聽benefit of聽having this type of聽product with these glasses or聽people that are in. You think about people who are nearsighted or聽farsighted or聽they need things like you said to聽read. If聽they鈥檙e avid readers. What kind of聽people are avid readers? Then what we聽can talk. Target that demographic because there are people that are there. I聽would imagine if聽they鈥檙e reading a聽lot, then they may be聽educated or聽they have a聽job where they have to聽read a聽lot so聽they might be聽editors or聽librarians or聽whatever it聽is. Then so聽then you hone in聽on聽your persona. It鈥檚 a聽fancy word for聽who鈥檚 buying your product most. Right. You develop a聽persona and聽say: 聭OK, hey these people are the聽types of聽people that we鈥檙e really targeting聮. I聽imagine since you mentioned those makeup related, primarily female.

Jesse:: Primarily older females.

Richard:: Because they need they need reading glasses but they still want to聽put their makeup on.

Alan:: Yeah right. Exactly.

Jesse:: You can鈥檛 see. Yeah. You have to聽take your glasses off to聽put on聽your makeup. That鈥檚 right.

Richard:: So聽basically you get to聽see with one eye at聽a聽time while you鈥檙e doing the聽makeup of聽the聽other eye and聽then you flip.

Alan:: Have everything focused. Yeah. That鈥檚 pretty clever.

Jesse:: It鈥檚 a聽clever little product but it鈥檚 kind of聽weird, you鈥檙e not wearing these around right out probably talking about that much, you just want to聽put on聽your makeup. You can鈥檛 wear your regular glasses. Well yeah.

Richard:: And you don鈥檛 even know what to聽type in. 聭One eye makeup glasses聮? (laughing)

Alan:: It鈥檚 like monocle or聽whatever it聽is.

Richard:: You have to聽create the聽new term for聽the聽correct鈥

Jesse:: Yeah, the聽term we聽talked about was makeup glasses. So聽how do聽they become thought leaders using the聽term makeup glasses?

Alan:: Well, that鈥檚 the聽thing. That term probably doesn鈥檛 really get a聽lot of聽searches. We聽would probably use a聽tool to聽figure that out. I聽mean there are tools out there like SEMrush where you would you could plug in聽a聽keyword and聽see how much search volume this has. It鈥檚 something that I聽think that is聽a聽paid tool so聽you have to聽look around for聽things that actually give you a聽little bit more information like SpyFu is聽another one. And I聽know we鈥檝e talked about this a聽little earlier before the聽show. Just see if聽there are any聽searches around that term.

Jesse:: So聽for聽anybody out there now, for聽Donna and聽Andrea, you can go聽to聽the聽SEMrush and聽type makeup glasses. But for聽anybody else out there, think about the聽word that you think you want to聽rank for. Like 聭This is聽what I聽sell, I鈥檓 pretty sure of聽it聮. Go聽to聽SEMrush.com or聽SpyFu.com and聽type in聽those words, and聽you鈥檒l start to聽see a聽bunch of聽results. You don鈥檛 necessarily have to聽pay for聽these either. There鈥檚 there鈥檚 paid versions of聽these that are all sorts of聽fancy stuff you can get but the聽basics are 聭What do聽I聽sell?聮 and聽then 聭What does Google say?聮 How many people are searching for聽this? And then how do聽you take that into becoming a聽thought leader? What is鈥 Taking those two terms, there are two words. How do聽we聽turn that into a鈥β燞ow are they going to聽read a聽blog about this?

Alan:: You don鈥檛 want to聽just start off writing a聽blog about makeup glasses. No聽one knows what that is. No聽one searching for聽it, so聽you got to聽think of聽the聽reason why someone would need that. And then the聽people that are utilizing that, and聽what鈥檚 the聽benefit of聽having the聽glass that teaches that I聽can crowdsource and聽get ideas from people and聽say: 聭OK, hey everybody tell me聽what the聽first word you think of聽when we聽think of聽makeup聮 for聽example. And I鈥檒l make a聽list of聽different things and聽the聽people will give me聽ideas and聽a聽roomful of聽a聽lot of聽different demographics there. OK, what about glasses? 聭Reading, or聽this, vision. I聽need to聽see聮, etc. Ok, great. And then we聽spun off into different ideas because you could actually connect the聽dots between the聽categories that we聽assigned and聽then make an聽idea out of聽that. I聽would think that also there are tools that will even help generate ideas if聽you need like just typing a聽word, reading, or聽makeup, or聽whatever it聽is. And it聽will give you a聽list of聽questions that people commonly ask. Common pain points or聽prepositions that relate to聽ideas that people are typing in聽because right now like I聽said, with Google back in聽the聽day, it聽was like you type in聽one or聽two words and聽you get a聽bunch of聽things that you need. Now people are asking questions and聽people are typing in聽full sentences. Then with the聽advent of聽like the聽audio, I聽mean one of聽the聽big things for聽me聽now is聽is聽how do聽we聽prepare for聽voice search. People are buying products, they don鈥檛 want to聽leave the聽house and聽they don鈥檛 want to聽go聽to聽a聽computer anymore. They just want to聽yell out something: 聭Hey, whatever the聽little鈥

Jesse:: Give me聽some toilet paper.

Alan:: Yeah, toilet paper. What鈥檚 the聽best toilet paper? What鈥檚 the聽softest toilet paper out there? And then that might become a聽query that a聽lot of聽people are asking. Then you would just generate some content around what people are asking, what pain points people have and聽why they need your product. Then you funnel them into what you do. And I聽think it鈥檚 better to聽capture that audience that isn鈥檛 aware of聽it. And I聽have an聽acronym that I聽use called ARC, A-R-C. It鈥檚 awareness, you need to聽be聽aware of. So聽think about what terms would bring people aware of聽your product. What is聽that? Okay, then you funnel them into. Maybe they鈥檙e doing research. That鈥檚 the聽R.聽All right, how does this product compare to聽other products of聽like, why can鈥檛 I聽just wear my聽reading glasses? Why can鈥檛 I聽just use a聽magnifying mirror? Well, it鈥檚 it鈥檚 more portable. I聽think of聽ideas of聽what the聽contrast, why people would question what you鈥檙e selling. All right, it鈥檚 a聽portable thing and聽if聽you鈥檙e on聽the聽go, if聽you鈥檙e on聽a聽train, if聽you鈥檙e on聽a聽plane, you鈥檙e in聽a聽bus you鈥檙e with a聽guy named Russ, we聽could do聽the聽doctors. But essentially you can give them reasons why they need your product then you funnel them into 聭You want to聽buy this聮. Buy online and聽they need you. That鈥檚 when you use words like online, purchase, buy, cheap or聽inexpensive or聽value. And I聽think most people understand what they sell. So聽the聽conversion words are very easy to聽do聽but it鈥檚 really for聽SEO. I聽feel like the聽benefit is聽generating content either through blogs, or聽through graphics, or聽a聽video, or聽audio as聽we鈥檙e doing now to聽bring people aware and聽cast that wide net of聽聭Hey, this is聽the聽top 10聽tips for聽a聽vision and聽here鈥檚 a聽really interesting thing. Makeup glasses聮. What鈥檚 that? You tie it聽into something that actually exists. Like 聭Oh, we聽have these things, we聽have a聽magnifying mirror and聽we聽also have makeup glasses聮. Then people get 聭What鈥檚 makeup glasses?聮. 聭Oh, I鈥檓 glad you asked.聮 And then you say that and聽then they鈥檙e like 聭Well, why would I聽need makeup glasses? I聽have a聽magnifying mirror.聮 Well, it鈥檚 portable, etc. I聽get on聽the聽bus, whatever it聽is. And then there鈥檚 like 聭I聽didn鈥檛 think about that聮. She really clever concept and聽then you want to聽buy one. You鈥檙e capturing them tying it聽into something that exists that鈥檚 really good that you鈥檝e given the聽research and聽then you give the聽conversion point.

Jesse:: That鈥檚 good. I聽think I聽heard there was you had these keywords that you want to聽rank for聽don鈥檛 necessarily go聽for聽the聽jugular there. Don鈥檛 just say these two words, I鈥檓 going to聽rank for聽these, I鈥檓 going to聽just type these words over and聽every social profile. Maybe take a聽step up聽from that and聽say: 聭OK, what subset are these words a聽part of?聮 And maybe make an聽article about that or聽a聽list, you know lists are in.

Alan:: Lists are in. And I聽think it鈥檚 also to聽understand you鈥檙e casting a聽wide net of聽things so聽you may not rank for聽that one thing but you might break for聽several small things. And if聽you鈥檙e going after the聽big fish all the聽time you miss all these other fish that are going to聽buy you. So聽unless you have a聽huge budget you want to聽do聽paid ads or聽whatever. If聽you鈥檙e a聽small mom or聽pop shop it鈥檚 better that you target the聽demographics that you know how to聽handle. Hey, who would buy that product? What are they talking about? Let me聽talk about that with them so聽they understand what my聽product is. Then they鈥檒l buy my聽product. You can鈥檛 just keep going like you said go聽for聽the聽jugular. I聽think a聽lot of聽especially small businesses they misunderstand that SEO is聽all about ranking for聽all your key terms. Well, actually you could rank for聽several questions that revolve around the聽language around your keywords. Yeah. So聽it鈥檚 like orbital language around your words you could actually rank for聽those and聽to聽get a聽step up聽and聽then start ranking for聽that big step later. You鈥檙e going to聽start off with the聽stuff that you know that you get some money.

Jesse:: Maybe you won鈥檛 rank for聽makeup glasses right away. But if聽you start writing a聽bunch of聽content or聽recording or聽doing a聽video that you say 聭Well, how do聽I聽put on聽makeup when I聽need to聽wear glasses?聮 And answering that question or聽25聽other questions that I聽can鈥檛 think of聽right now. Eventually, you do聽ring for聽a聽bunch of聽stuff. Maybe it聽was you didn鈥檛 realize that was the聽right word but. What are people yelling out there, 聭Alexa? Alexa, how do聽I聽put on聽makeup, I聽can鈥檛 see.聮

Alan:: 聭I聽can鈥檛 see, where are you, Alexa?聮 (laughing)

Jesse:: So, yell at聽your voice device.

Alan:: It鈥檚 interesting too because there are tools to聽help with that too. I聽think we聽alluded to聽that before the聽show is聽that there鈥檚 a聽tool that I聽love called Answer the聽Public. Answerthepublic.com you type it聽in聽and聽you see this kind of聽creepy old guy that鈥檚 looking at聽you waiting for聽you to聽do聽something about it. But when you type in聽your word you maybe put makeup glasses or聽you put reading glasses just as聽a聽general thing. Sure it鈥檒l give you a聽list of聽questions and聽prepositions and聽such and聽so. That I聽think will help guide you about what people online are asking. That could lead you to聽write content or聽either write a聽blog answering that question or聽creating an聽infographic or聽creating a聽video that talks about something really popular. So聽it鈥檚 really helpful if聽you鈥檙e not aware of, if聽you don鈥檛 have a聽crowd of聽people to聽kind of聽crowdsource then you can go聽to聽tools like that, It聽will actually give you answers. Now it鈥檚 interesting too, Google actually provides that. So聽if聽you just type in, you see that right with a聽little search coverage on聽it. This suggested things if聽you start typing something in, lists of聽things will actually go聽up. And if聽I鈥檓 not mistaken, if聽you scroll down to聽the聽bottom of聽the聽page (which no聽one does), there鈥檚 a聽list of聽suggestions there too.

Jesse:: Oh聽there鈥檚 a聽there鈥檚 a聽bottom? (laughing)

Alan:: Exactly, right.

Jesse:: I聽didn鈥檛 realize that I聽just click on聽the聽first thing on聽the聽top of聽Google.

Alan:: Yeah, exactly. Mostly will do, unfortunately. But there is聽value just people scrolling down. You鈥檒l find that you鈥檒l have a聽lot of聽resources already available to聽you for聽free and聽that you don鈥檛 necessarily have to聽go聽reinventing the聽wheel. You can look at聽what people are doing and聽see 聭Hey, I聽can actually add this to聽my聽website.聮

Richard:: So聽from a聽101聽perspective, because this is聽perfect right here.

Jesse:: Yeah, this is聽I聽think is聽when you could pull over your car and聽write this down.

Richard:: So聽they now decided 聭we鈥檙e just run with this makeup glasses聮. They decided they鈥檙e going to聽start creating content around this. They have different questions like you said: how do聽you put on聽makeup when you have read glasses on, whatever the聽phrase is. They are obviously not putting this in聽their product description.

Alan:: Right.

Richard:: So聽what exactly does this call-to-action for聽this beginner look like? They鈥檙e writing this on聽their blog and聽then they have a聽link that goes back to聽their product page for聽the聽聭Ask if聽you want to聽buy it聽here聮. What鈥檚 a聽good way for聽them to聽just start thinking about this as聽a聽process?

Alan:: All right, we鈥檙e talking. We鈥檒l just take a聽subset of聽this travelers, you鈥檙e now reaching the聽travel people that like to聽read. So聽if聽you feel like to聽travel you like to聽read here鈥檚 a聽benefit and聽we鈥檒l write a聽blog about that and聽show you benefits of聽how this product can help you. And then I聽would write a聽blog and聽then hopefully you have some kind of聽social media profiles that you may want to聽do聽ads. I聽would think like Facebook, Twitter, and聽Pinterest if聽you have a聽visual product. There鈥檚 a聽variety, Instagram. Yeah.

Jesse:: That these days.

Alan:: Yeah. Oh聽yeah. These kids. Get on聽Instagram and聽TED talks and聽your vines.

Jesse:: No, no. Don鈥檛 go聽crazy, everybody. Get your Facebook.

Alan:: Select few that you would be聽good at聽and聽then you could syndicate that blog or聽that image or聽whatever it聽is聽across those networks. But as聽you alluded to聽when you have these things that you鈥檙e syndicating, for聽example, you do聽want to聽link back to聽your product or聽back to聽your website or聽back to聽a聽call you actually want them to聽take because everything has value for聽SEO. I聽mean internal linking actually does help. I聽mean from a聽technical perspective, search engines looking at聽your website a聽little better but also from a聽practical perspective. You鈥檝e got people, you want to聽show you a聽blog. 聭Hey, look at聽this article. Oh聽great, that鈥檚 a聽great article. Now what?聮 You know like they鈥檙e just reading on聽that. 聭That鈥檚 wonderful. Now I聽know about the聽product.聮 Now you鈥檙e relying on聽them to聽go聽research the聽product and聽try to聽find you or聽you give them access point in聽your video, in聽your infographic, in聽your blog. Make sure you make a聽lead there, a聽link or聽at聽least your brand somewhere in聽there or聽sponsored by聽so-and-so, or聽if聽you are the聽influencer, for聽example, put your name in聽there or聽whatever it聽is. So聽that they follow you, know about your product, know about your brand and聽hopefully click on聽that link and聽go聽back to聽your web page. We聽have more information.

Jesse:: And basically for聽anybody that missed the聽part about the聽link. The link does not mean 聭Here鈥檚 the聽name of聽my聽store. Go聽google it.聮 It聽means dub dub dub dot U聽R聽L聽dot com.

Richard:: Or聽slash your product name.

Jesse:: Yeah. Go聽directly to聽it, that鈥檚 a聽link.

Richard:: Basically the聽easy way around it聽is聽go聽to聽the聽product and聽look at聽it聽on聽your site that you鈥檙e looking at. Go聽up聽to聽the聽top URL, copy paste.

Alan:: Copy paste. Exactly. And I聽think people forget.

Jesse:: CTRL C,聽CTRL V.聽Just break your way back down.

Alan:: And I聽always realized that some people had to聽be聽led to聽the聽product. It鈥檚 so聽funny that I聽talk to聽my聽students about that all the聽time. This is聽a聽great image you have here in聽front of聽your 褑ebsite but there is聽no聽call-to-action telling me聽what to聽do.聮 And you鈥檇 be聽surprised how many people need that. 聭Book here for聽best value.聮 聭Look here for聽the聽product.聮 聭Here for聽reading glasses.聮

Jesse:: Here鈥檚 the聽store. Buy now. Shop online. Any of聽those words mean more than 聭just look at聽this pretty picture.聮

Alan:: Exactly. Exactly. You don鈥檛 just assume that they鈥檙e going to聽find it. You got to聽guide them in聽the聽right direction.

Jesse:: Don鈥檛 assume people will spend more than two seconds looking at聽either.

Alan:: And then just bam.

Jesse:: They want it聽now.

Alan:: So聽true.

Richard:: So聽now they have a聽blog post. We聽got the聽call-to-action back. They鈥檙e going back. They have this formula. Now is聽there a聽certain amount of聽time that they should be聽putting into this? They鈥檝e got a聽lot of聽other things to聽be聽doing.

Alan:: That鈥檚 a聽great question.

Jesse:: Hopefully, they鈥檙e shipping products left and聽right.

Alan:: They have to聽spend time counting their money, sacks full of聽dollar bills that they got. No, I聽think it鈥檚 important to聽allocate resources and/or time for聽generating content. I聽would say on聽average, blog once a聽week if聽you can but at聽least once a聽month at聽least I聽say twice a聽month and聽at聽the聽minimum. And then once a聽week if聽you鈥檝e got some resources. If聽you can鈥檛, maybe you hire someone to聽help you, get an聽intern or聽a聽family member to聽write some stuff about what you鈥檙e talking about. And it聽also sometimes helps to聽have a聽different voice. So聽it聽may be聽good to聽have somebody else on聽board and聽do聽that. This is聽a聽thing I聽would do. This is聽a聽really basic thing but it聽requires a聽little bit of聽effort.

Jesse:: All right. Ah, effort. I聽thought I聽was just going to聽be鈥

Alan:: Oh, I聽got to聽work here? (laughing)

Jesse:: Click an聽SEO button here.

Alan:: That鈥檚 the聽thing. People think you just spend some money you get SEO. No, you got to聽put in聽a聽little time and聽effort. That鈥檚 what any聽marketing every successful鈥

Richard:: Sometime a聽lottery though.

Alan:: Yeah, I聽know. Exactly. Any successful marketer, anyone who is聽really on聽top of聽their game puts in聽that effort, that extra effort, puts their voice into it.

Jesse:: Help me聽with the聽effort.

Alan:: OK. So聽what we鈥檒l do聽is聽we鈥檒l create a聽video about whatever being what we聽just described what we聽discuss. Right. Maybe a聽five to聽ten minute long video. Now you have a聽resource. All right. It聽has audio in聽it聽so聽we聽could rip that. Put that on聽SoundCloud or聽whatever audio sources that we聽want to聽syndicate to. We鈥檝e created a聽podcast or聽an聽audio lesson. Then we聽also have the聽transcription of聽that audio which becomes a聽blog post, right which we聽could then put on聽our website.

Jesse:: Where do聽you get the聽transcription?

Alan:: You have to聽transcribe it, either write out your script or聽you can have a聽service that will do聽that for聽you.

Richard:: R-E-V, rev.com will transcribe it. They鈥檙e like a聽buck a聽minute.

Alan:: There you go. So聽you five minutes, you got five bucks. Right? There you go. So聽you got a聽five-minute video. You put that on聽YouTube. Now you have a聽place to聽syndicate and聽you can there鈥檚 other places you like Vimeo, a聽couple other places. You鈥檝e got on聽YouTube, that link back from YouTube. You鈥檝e got the聽audio, you got the聽link.

Jesse:: How do聽I聽get this link in聽there?

Alan:: Put it聽in聽the聽YouTube description.

Jesse:: So聽you upload the聽video, write a聽little title there. Maybe you鈥檙e using your one of聽your favorite words here that we聽learned from, these other links. And then the聽link is聽in聽the聽profile. Right. OK. Correct.

Richard:: And now you鈥檙e going to聽do聽is聽do聽that. You don鈥檛 even have to聽do聽the聽copy. See this time because you鈥檝e already done it聽prior. You just copy.

Jesse:: CTRL V.聽

Alan:: Then make sure when you put content in聽other locations if聽there鈥檚 an聽ability to聽write a聽description and聽put a聽link in聽there, link back to聽your website because you鈥檙e getting a聽free link from the聽place you鈥檙e syndicating your content to. And so聽you put the聽video there. You put the聽audio on聽SoundCloud.com, or聽maybe iTunes if聽you want to聽start a聽podcast or聽something. That鈥檚 a聽whole other thing, we鈥檒l get into it. But then the聽transcription is聽a聽blog post that you put on聽your own website. Then if聽the聽video has some compelling imagery you could either create some kind of聽graphic out of聽that or聽maybe it鈥檚 a聽series of聽pictures that come from the聽video that you can put in聽Pinterest, for聽example, another other social media platform because they may be聽examples of聽what you鈥檙e to聽be聽talking about. If聽you want to聽get really clever, you could tell the聽story through a聽slide show rather than just a聽video. So聽people who are on聽the聽go聽and聽don鈥檛 want to聽watch a聽video and聽there are other places like slideshare.net which is聽actually owned by聽LinkedIn. So聽now you鈥檝e taken one idea and聽converted it聽into five pieces of聽content for聽different audiences that digest information differently. I聽loved when I鈥檝e done podcasting, and聽I聽do聽podcasts as聽well. They told me聽that they were listening to聽me聽on聽the聽way to聽work. So聽I聽didn鈥檛 even need to聽be聽in聽front of聽a聽computer. And I鈥檓 reaching you now. And that鈥檚 what鈥檚 cool about that method of聽doing things. You take a聽really hard thing then break it聽into five things. Now you have exponentially increased your awareness and聽value by聽taking the聽time to聽do聽that one thing.

Jesse:: This is聽all coming from one five-minute video.

Alan:: Right. That鈥檚 the聽hardest thing to聽do聽though. Not everybody has resources and聽time to聽do聽that. But if聽I聽had the聽resources and/or the聽time and聽the聽knowledge that鈥檚 what I聽would do聽at聽a聽prior. Hire someone to聽help me聽with the聽video and聽stuff that you could do聽that鈥檚 not that expensive.

Jesse:: And you could just have your friend hold up聽a聽phone and聽push their thumb you know like that.

Alan:: Yeah, just a聽demonstration video.

Jesse:: That鈥檚 a聽start.

Alan:: Yeah. Start small, start simple. A聽lot of聽this stuff doesn鈥檛 happen overnight. You got to聽start simple and聽you鈥檇 be聽surprised how many of聽the聽biggest names in聽the聽business. You鈥檒l take Richard Branson, he聽started with a聽local record store. Now he鈥檚 a聽billionaire. He聽was broke. I鈥檓 not saying you gonna become Richard Branson, but I聽mean he聽started somewhere and聽he聽took it聽exponentially built upon what he聽already did. That鈥檚 the聽way to聽think about it. That鈥檚 how SEO works.

Jesse:: There is聽work. All right. But when you think about what kind of聽video you would want to聽make, going back again to聽these words that you want to聽ring for聽and聽answer questions that people are asking. Pick up聽your phone, five minutes, if聽you have a聽friend with better video equipment, better audio, that鈥檚 better.

Alan:: Your phone takes really great videos nowadays. It聽used to聽be聽a聽lot harder.

Jesse:: Yeah. You can pick up聽your phone. You do聽a聽five-minute video, record that. We聽talked about all the聽things that Allen did. There鈥檚 audio, video, there are multiple social pieces that can come out of聽that. And I聽suppose you can do聽a聽blog post on聽that too. Yeah. A聽five-minute blog post is聽how many words is聽that? A聽couple hundred words probably?

Alan:: Maybe more than that. Depends how much you鈥檙e talking airing the聽video. If聽you鈥檙e yammering on聽about stuff it聽could be聽probably eight hundred thousand words. Maybe it鈥檚 a聽series. It鈥檚 actually happened with a聽client. The guy took our idea and聽expanded upon it聽for聽two thousand words. We鈥檙e like 聭This is聽too long, man.聮 So聽what we聽did is聽we聽just made a聽series. All right. This is聽this product. Volume 1,聽Volume 2,聽Volume 3.聽People started following. They鈥檙e waiting for聽the聽next one. So聽you created this series out of聽this whole thing. If聽you have a聽really long video, cut it聽up聽and聽then make, now you have five videos that are each three minutes apiece or聽whatever. Or聽maybe it鈥檚 more than that. You want some little more compelling. And then each one of聽those has. So聽if聽you made let鈥檚 say 20-minute long video, four or聽five-minute videos each one of聽those, do聽the聽exact same method I聽just mentioned, exponentially reaching five pieces of聽content per video, you may have 20聽pieces of聽content. All about the聽same thing. So聽it鈥檇 be聽really easy, not easy but effective way of聽marketing yourself without putting a聽lot of聽time and聽effort every little thing.

Jesse:: So聽creating content doesn鈥檛 have to聽be聽that hard. People that are listening right now don鈥檛 have to聽be聽聭All right, I鈥檓 gonna go聽home with my聽pencil and聽paper and聽have to聽write two thousand words down聮. This is聽doesn鈥檛 have鈥

Richard:: You don鈥檛 have to聽go聽to聽a聽cabin at聽the聽top of聽the聽hill in聽the聽woods (laughing.)

Richard:: Spielberg magic.

Jesse:: You just need to聽pick up聽the聽phone and聽go聽and聽talk about things that your business sells.

Alan:: You don鈥檛 have to聽hire Pixar. It鈥檚 OK.

Jesse:: Excellent. We聽talked a聽little bit about helping Flipzees for聽instance so聽that was a聽good example that we聽could talk about. I聽wanted to聽also kind of聽pick your brain on聽live advice because people that listen to聽this podcast before or聽remember some of聽our previous guests and聽kind of聽taking the聽same methodology. So聽we聽had a聽customer on聽probably four or聽five ago the聽name of聽the聽URL is聽CakeSafe. So聽they sell, it鈥檚 a聽like a聽plexiglass container that you can ship cakes in, real fancy and聽thousand dollars, multi-thousand dollar cakes. Yeah. So聽for聽them how鈥 take the聽same methodology, a聽one or聽two minutes synopsis, what advice would you give them?

Alan:: Who needs a聽CakeSafe?

Richard:: Bakers.

Jesse:: High-end bakers.

Richard:: There you go. High-end bakers, wedding bakers, people who are really going to聽make corporate events.

Jesse:: Super fancy cupcakes, there TV聽shows about cupcakes.

Alan:: Yeah, I鈥檝e seen it聽on聽 what they call it聽 Netflix. There鈥檚 a聽whole show about the聽fancy bakeries.

Jesse:: So聽for聽them鈥 I聽mean we聽know, we聽talked a聽little bit that some of聽the聽questions were 聭How do聽I聽ship a聽cake?聮 I聽think they have followed the聽path to聽become thought leaders in聽that one.

Richard:: It鈥檚 interesting that made me聽think of聽do聽you always even have to聽create the聽content? How much of聽curating content and聽adding an聽opinion to聽it聽can actually help you? Something Jesse just said made me聽think about the聽Cake Wars is聽one of聽the聽shows. And I聽think even one time they had talked to聽them about sponsoring something like that. At聽one point they鈥檙e like 聭Oh yeah we聽love it, but we聽can鈥檛 use you guys because a聽large part of聽the聽drama of聽the聽show is聽transporting the聽cake from where they did it聽to聽make it聽over to聽the聽table聮 and聽they wanted it聽to聽fall sometimes.

Jesse:: Make everybody cry.

Richard:: It鈥檚 part of聽the聽show. What I聽just started thinking out loud was listening to聽you guys talk was what if聽you took, I聽don鈥檛 know the聽exact rules, but you took a聽video that鈥檚 out there of聽the聽cake falling. Then you鈥檙e like 聭Hey, don鈥檛 let this happen.聮 There鈥檚 some form of鈥

Alan:: You could make back off, that鈥檚 a聽really good point. You can say: 聭Have you seen Cake Wars? You see those people with their faces when they dropped their cake that they had? You don鈥檛 want that to聽happen to聽you. You run a聽business, you鈥檙e not on聽a聽TV聽show. This is聽your business, this is聽your money on聽the聽line, so聽what you need to聽do聽is聽to聽get something to聽protect your cake. And I鈥檝e got the聽thing for聽you and聽this is聽a聽product that actually protects this cake聮. This, that and聽all these speeches, and聽high-end bakers use it聽and聽it鈥檚 CakeSafe. Build a聽video or聽a聽piece of聽content, offer that idea, taking from something that鈥檚 already popular. As聽I聽mentioned before you using an聽idea of聽that is聽just already out there and聽tying it聽into your idea, because people may not have heard of聽CakeSafe but they understand the聽drama and聽what better drama than on聽the聽TV聽show. I聽mean you may not be聽able to聽use a聽video clip but you could say 聭Have you seen that?聮 Maybe make your own video, drop a聽cake or聽whatever it聽is, make an聽animation of聽dropping the聽cake, whatever it聽is. With a聽blog post, for聽example, you don鈥檛 have to聽try, you can just make an聽article about that and聽then put hashtag #CakeSafe on聽social media, or聽even #CakeWars or聽even hit them up聽because a聽lot of聽times what I聽would do聽even with a聽podcast, mention somebody that I聽covered on聽a聽show, SEMRush for聽example. Reach out to聽them, mention on聽them on聽the聽show and聽on聽Twitter. And you鈥檇 be聽surprised so聽many people be聽right back: 聭Thank you聮, or聽聭I聽love it聮, 聭That鈥檚 great聮. They promote your own product just talking to聽you. In聽the聽case of聽Raven tools, they send us聽T-shirts and聽gave links to聽our website. It聽was really fun. Don鈥檛 expect all that, but that would be聽the聽perfect example where I聽would take that product, tie it聽into something that everyone knows, everybody who was paying attention including bakers. Because those are the聽people who really listen to聽the聽show.

Richard:: Yeah, it鈥檚 interesting you said something else that keeps inspiring other thoughts. So聽I聽know we鈥檙e not lawyers, check with someone on聽the聽exact nuance of聽this, but what would be聽a聽basic just saying 聭Oh I聽got this from this website聮, maybe referring back to聽Cake Wars or聽something like that because at聽least if聽they feel like they鈥檙e getting some sort of聽credit for聽it, that it聽was theirs, it聽seems like in聽some way 聭Why?聮 Why, unless you were a聽real nitpicky business, why would you care because it鈥檚 another link back to聽you, they鈥檙e talking to聽bakers, they want bigger you know. Is聽there 聭do at聽least this聮, say reference the聽site you鈥檝e got it聽from, give credit to聽somebody, is聽there some basic structure that someone should follow?

Alan:: If聽you generate a聽blog, any聽kind of聽thing with your borrowing ideas and聽or聽content you definitely want to聽reference the聽content, don鈥檛 borrow images, I鈥檝e learned that they would call the聽trademark, and聽the聽company Getty, they will come after you. And I聽had a聽poor lady I聽was talking to聽and聽she borrowed an聽image from an聽online source and聽then basically what happened the聽Getty came after, they said that she owes them money, seven hundred bucks or聽something for聽an聽image聽鈥 crazy. Anyway, long story short, you definitely want to聽curate your own or聽maybe even ask permission, if聽you know Cake Wars in聽this scenario. They had it聽in聽and聽they said: 聭We can鈥檛 use you聮. 聭I聽understand that. Do聽you mind if聽I聽use your video as聽an聽example?聮 In聽a聽lot of聽times under parity you can get away with it聽anyway but why not get permission from them: 聭Yeah, sure. That鈥檚 great, promoting our show.聮 Look at聽the聽drama and聽you can make it聽a聽positive spin聽鈥 ok, we聽want to聽help the聽people that are not on聽TV. And then you kind of聽tie it聽together and聽make a聽friendly thing. And I聽think that if聽you have those kinds of聽ins and聽you鈥檙e in聽the聽right place but if聽you don鈥檛 at聽least give credit for聽an聽idea or聽something like that. And a聽lot of聽times when you give credit, then you鈥檙e actively promoting them, so聽therefore they鈥檙e really grateful for聽that.

Jesse:: They are happy, and聽that鈥檚 why you start getting likes.

Alan:: Exactly, and聽that鈥檚 why you say: 聭Hey, Cake Wars on聽Twitter, I聽mentioned you on聽my聽show, or聽my聽video, or聽whatever it聽is聽I聽had聮. They鈥檒l probably thank you for聽it.

Jesse:: So聽we鈥檝e used a聽couple of聽URLs here, so聽I聽think we聽have to聽apply this strategy. So聽Speedy, when you do聽the聽transcript here and聽we聽talked about SEMRush, we聽mentioned on聽the聽podcast. That鈥檚 the聽idea, mention people and聽give a聽link to聽them. Yeah, we聽want some links.

Alan:: Yeah, there you go. Maybe SEMRush will at聽least give you a聽shout out on聽Twitter. Why not?

Jesse:: Yeah, free count. We聽want some free stuff.

Alan:: All right, what you want too to聽mention. BuzzSumo. It鈥檚 actually a聽great one, because if聽you鈥檙e looking for聽people to聽reach out now that you鈥檝e built your content, go聽to聽BuzzSumo. It鈥檚 a聽paid service but you get a聽couple of聽searches for聽free and聽you can find influencers in聽your space. So聽you could type in聽a聽cake, and聽then whoever mentions cake, it鈥檒l show you articles and/or Twitter people and聽who鈥檚 the聽most popular and聽who is聽the聽most likely to聽respond to聽you, so聽if聽you don鈥檛 know who to聽write to鈥

Jesse:: So聽it聽has the聽most likely to聽respond.

Alan:: Yeah, like reply-retweet ratio. Someone has a聽thousand followers, and聽retweet ratio is聽basically ninety percent versus someone who has a聽million followers but the聽ratio is聽zero. So聽I聽probably follow a聽thousand people because they were likely to聽promote my聽content, and聽sometimes you can find real gold nuggets there, a聽lot of聽times you don鈥檛 know about how people are really into your product and聽then you reach them and聽they鈥檙e like 聭Oh my聽gosh I聽really love that thing聮. I聽think it鈥檚 so鈥

Jesse:: So聽follow them, send them pictures, maybe this five-minute video that she created, and聽the聽blog posts that鈥檚 attached to聽it.

Alan:: Absolutely, that鈥檚 how to聽get to聽amplify your voice, you could take that idea, take everything you going on聽there, and聽go聽on聽a聽tool like that. Talk to聽the聽right types of聽people, bakers, promoters or聽people that are really into pastries or聽weddings even. And then get them to聽help you promote your own products.

Jesse:: Perfect. I聽think that鈥檚 a聽really good kind of聽a聽refresher for聽SEO for聽me. I聽know now I聽could think of聽a聽couple ideas for聽my聽side projects that I聽need to聽start working on, I鈥檓 probably to聽make Rich hold up聽his phone. I鈥檓 going to聽do聽a聽five-minute video and聽make all these pieces of聽content, and聽I聽hope the聽people that are listening right now on聽the聽workout or聽in聽the聽car thinking 聭I聽can do聽this too, I聽could do聽a聽five-minute video, create all these pieces聮. So聽listen again, think about this and聽check out the聽blog post for聽all the聽different things we聽had on聽this, that we聽talked about. If聽you don鈥檛 remember them they鈥檒l be聽in聽the聽blog post. Show notes and聽everything. So, Alan, it鈥檚 awesome, you teach a聽class, professor Bush.

Alan:: Instructor I聽should say. UCSD, University of聽California, San Diego.

Jesse:: So聽for聽other people that want to聽hear more from you, I聽mean where else are you online?

Alan:: Yeah, I鈥檓 on聽Twitter, Alan H聽Bush at聽Twitter. I鈥檓 also the聽VP聽of聽Operations Director and聽the聽Head of聽SEO Department at聽Ignite Visibility. So聽if聽you need to聽see a聽thing, go聽to聽Ignite Visibility. You can reach me聽as聽I聽said, Alan H聽Bush on聽Twitter, on聽LinkedIn I鈥檓 Alan Bush I聽believe.

Jesse:: Were you able to聽get Alan Bush in聽all?

Alan:: Yeah, pretty much everywhere. H聽is聽my聽middle name, so聽basically you can reach me聽Alan H聽Bush almost on聽everything but a聽social media that I鈥檓 most prominent on聽are Twitter and聽LinkedIn and聽then of聽course just reach out I聽would love for聽anybody who wants some advice.

Jesse:: That鈥檚 perfect. Alan, I聽really appreciate you being on聽the聽show, Richard, another good show. It鈥檚 Friday.

Richard:: Yeah, a聽good stop, ready to聽get to聽work.

Jesse:: Everybody out there, make it聽happen.
