Jesse: What鈥檚 going on? How鈥檚 it聽going today, Richard?
Richard: It鈥檚 going well. How about yourself?
Jesse: It鈥檚 an聽excellent day here. It鈥檚 Friday.
Richard: Are you on聽special behavior today?
Jesse: Special behavior? How so? Oh聽yes, I鈥檓 on聽special behavior because my聽boss is聽in聽the聽studio today. So聽let鈥檚 bring him on. This is聽V.P. of聽marketing at聽黑料门, David Novick.
David: Hey everybody. Thanks for聽having me聽onboard today, I聽appreciate it. Jesse, I聽expect you to聽be聽your normal random awesome self.
Jesse: I鈥檒l try to聽keep it聽random, not best behavior.
Richard: Beautiful Sunday. I鈥檓 excited to聽have you in. Sounds like you have some interesting stats coming up聽for聽the聽holiday season, and聽just what鈥檚 been going on聽in聽the聽state of聽the聽Internet and聽
David: Sure, sure. So聽you know I聽love getting the聽opportunity to聽work with you guys. I聽see it聽from the聽periphery and聽see that you do聽an聽awesome job. What you鈥檙e doing is聽really going into the聽detail to聽help our merchants and聽anybody else out there to聽learn more about how to聽do聽
Richard: Sounds good.
David: OK. I鈥檝e got a聽long list of聽cool stuff that people really don鈥檛 know about, some really late breaking news. Hopefully, they鈥檒l find that as聽exciting as聽I聽did just reading about it, researching and聽writing it聽down.
Richard: Awesome.
David: I鈥檒l just start rattling some stuff off. Love to聽hear your thoughts about these, we聽haven鈥檛 even gone over them yet. It鈥檚 kind of聽interesting but we鈥檙e at聽them, it鈥檚 amazing. It鈥檚 an聽amazing thing聽鈥 the聽growth of聽the聽Internet and聽
Jesse: We鈥檒l put this on聽the聽blog page. 黑料门.com/blog/podcast out there.
David: You don鈥檛 need to聽take any聽frantic notes either. We鈥檒l take care of聽this for聽you. It鈥檚 a聽good opportunity to聽help digest some of聽this stuff. So聽over 50聽percent of聽the聽population is聽now Internet users in聽the聽entire globe.
Jesse: That鈥檚 pretty amazing. I聽mean I聽think you know we鈥檝e been around a聽long time. There鈥檚 some gray hair here in聽this office. When you think about it, back a聽long time ago the聽Internet was OK聽for聽universities and聽then it聽was business people. Now everybody has the聽Internet in聽their pocket. Everybody, meaning half of聽the聽world, there are people that maybe have never sat down on聽the聽computer as聽we聽might think of聽a聽computer, but they have the聽Internet in聽their pocket.
Richard: That鈥檚 part of聽what鈥檚 going on聽with the聽smartphone. Was it聽really the聽Internet or聽is聽it聽the聽smartphone that鈥檚 doing this? I聽mean, you have to聽have the聽Internet obviously. But that computer聽鈥 because it鈥檚 really a聽computer in聽your pocket that happens to聽make phone calls. We鈥檙e talking鈥 So聽first off you guys provide the聽opportunity for聽people to聽create a聽business, and聽they can do聽it聽internationally, they can do聽it聽domestically. These numbers are international now, going global.
David: We聽all should be聽thinking globally at聽this point. Even small businesses.
Jesse: That鈥檚 the聽part that鈥檚 fascinating. There are 3.6聽billion people that you have access to鈥
David: Exactly.
Richard: 鈥or the聽cost of聽your cell phone plan or聽whatever plan you have.
David: Let鈥檚 think about this. Not only there are 3.6聽billion Internet users in聽2018, but the聽time on聽the聽internet in聽the聽past eight years has also actually doubled. So, each user is聽now averaging 5.9聽hours a聽day, not a聽month, not a聽week, per day. And we鈥檙e all guilty of聽this. Let鈥檚 think about this. But the聽efficiency of聽using your mobile device to聽figure things out, to聽entertain yourself, to聽communicate with others is聽phenomenal. Right. We聽do聽need to聽be聽careful here a聽little bit. I聽mean 5.9聽hours is聽a聽lot. Yesterday was鈥
Jesse: Cut the聽kids off a聽little bit.
David: There are some great apps out there to聽cut your kids off and聽I聽think that鈥檚 a聽super important thing.
Jesse: Sure.
David: Careful about that. Anyway, business is聽happening on聽the聽internet and聽you need to聽be聽there and聽if聽you鈥檙e listening to聽this, obviously you are there. Hopefully, we鈥檒l give you a聽couple more pieces of聽ammo today to聽help you refine your game in聽a聽couple of聽pieces that might help you up聽your game as聽well. Let鈥檚 move on聽and聽talk about some other interesting stats. The National Retail Federation released some interesting news. We聽found out that last year鈥檚 holiday spending hit 814聽billion dollars, not million. I聽said something with a聽B.
Jesse: Yeah, that鈥檚 a聽big number. Can I聽get just one of聽those?
David: I鈥檒l take them! Yeah!
Richard: It鈥檚 crazy because you say one of聽those, and聽it鈥檚 so聽easy when you hear million, billion, trillion, no, it鈥檚 not just a聽different letter, different pronunciation. There鈥檚 a聽thousand M鈥檚 for聽every B.聽Yeah. Say that out loud. There are eight hundred and聽sixteen thousand million dollars being spent. That鈥檚 freaking ridiculous.
Jesse: If聽you saw my聽front door, you would start to聽understand why I聽participate. Yeah. There are packages there. Like for聽my聽wife. I鈥檓 going to聽say, it鈥檚 mostly for聽my聽wife. Yeah. There鈥檙e just packages every single day and聽multiple ones and聽I聽don鈥檛 know what鈥檚 in聽there.
David: It鈥檚 everyday business now and聽it鈥檚 fantastic. It聽makes things a聽lot more efficient. Who really wants to聽go聽out to聽the聽store? If聽you have a聽complex product that you really need to聽see like a聽large stereo聽鈥 you want to聽hear a聽stereo. Well, you go聽to聽the聽store and聽you listen to聽it, and聽then maybe buy it聽online.
Jesse: On聽your phone when you walk off the聽store.
David: It鈥檚 come down to聽kiosks at聽some point and聽showrooming is聽happening. Yeah, let鈥檚 continue a聽little bit. So, it鈥檚 814聽billion according to聽Mary Meeker.
Richard: They鈥檙e all merging together too. Right. We聽use this term
David: You make an聽interesting point and聽it鈥檚 not necessarily a聽problem with the聽physical store. Physical stores are alive and聽well. If聽you look at聽the聽stats, and聽I聽don鈥檛 have them here with me聽today, but you will see that mall closures are definitely happening and聽some store footprints are disappearing. But some of聽the聽
Jesse: I聽think part of聽the聽reason for聽this continued growth is聽more and聽more people are getting used to聽buying a聽lot of聽things online and聽not just the聽things they used to聽not just buy, like books on聽Amazon. They鈥檙e essentially buying everything online even when you鈥檙e like: 聯OK, it鈥檚 my聽kid鈥檚 birthday coming up聽in聽a聽couple days, so聽we聽could go聽to聽Target and聽whatnot and聽buy stuff but we聽just bought online because it鈥檚 so聽much easier聰. And then you see the聽rise of聽the聽direct to聽consumer brands. Now if聽you have a聽good idea, if聽you either make the聽product yourself, you get it聽manufactured somewhere. Now you are the聽whole brand and聽basically, it聽opens up聽a聽lot of聽黑料门 merchants to聽be聽able to聽create a聽brand and聽sell online. People are not afraid to聽buy online at聽all. It聽happens all the聽time. These success stories.
Richard: Yeah, it鈥檚 a聽lot different when we聽first started. I聽think back to聽starting days, I聽actually started with physical or聽not physical, but the聽credit card processing piece of聽it. It聽was like 聯wow I聽could see behind the聽scenes they鈥檇 send me聽their statements聰, you try to聽get them a聽better rate and聽not always it聽would be聽the聽
Jesse: And you鈥檙e online.
David: One of聽the聽things that I聽like that Richard said, it鈥檚 really interesting how it聽was back in聽the聽day. Suppose you鈥檙e a聽saddle guy and聽I聽think I聽heard about this story. It聽was really about having that content, having that product and聽being able to聽get it聽out there to聽your audience. Getting to聽your audience is聽the聽thing that we鈥檙e really focusing on聽now at聽黑料门
Jesse: The important part is聽having the聽infrastructure taken care of. 黑料门 really takes care of聽that for聽you. You get your products future prices, tax, shipping, all that stuff is聽now taken care of聽that used to聽be聽a聽very expensive process back in聽the聽day. A聽
Richard: Oh, man. First off it聽goes back to聽what we聽were talking about earlier with the聽3.6聽billion people online. Those people are sharing things online. Those people are mostly consuming which is聽good for聽
Jesse: Yeah, it鈥檚 a聽pretty broad.
Richard: Three point six billion people.
David: You know what. Here鈥檚 the聽thing. As聽even some of聽the聽pro guys, I鈥檓 looking at聽here. Where do聽I聽start on聽this topic and聽it聽is聽tough but that鈥檚 what we聽want to聽do. We聽want to聽make it聽easy for聽you. The tools that we聽bring onboard are the聽ones that we聽believe in. If聽you鈥檙e not successful as聽an聽黑料门 merchant, we鈥檙e not successful. We鈥檙e only going to聽steer you toward things that we聽have proven and聽do聽work. When it聽comes down to聽it鈥 Look there鈥檚 a聽couple of聽things that we鈥檝e been focusing on聽lately. Social selling is聽a聽huge piece and聽social selling is聽kind of聽a聽new term. People didn鈥檛 believe in聽it聽at聽first but look. I鈥檓 going to聽hop into my聽stats a聽little bit more here. Did you know that there is聽48% as聽of聽this year of聽the聽U.S. population is聽either Millennials or聽Generation Z.聽Crazy right. Crazy sell, baby boomers. I聽mean they鈥檙e adopting digital faster than almost anybody as聽a聽percentage. But anyway millennials and聽Gen Z聽are a聽huge piece and聽growing鈥
Jesse: What makes that interesting is聽if聽you鈥檙e not in聽Generation Z,聽what鈥檚 the聽picture you have of聽this person. Right. You have a聽picture of聽somebody probably looking down at聽their phone. Right. So聽looking at聽their phone, you assume they鈥檙e looking at聽social media. That鈥檚 the聽place where you need to聽target people.
David: That is聽true. We鈥檒l share this online as聽well. There was an聽Audi ad聽survey in聽2018. A聽very competent group put it聽together and聽it聽showed that for聽millennials and聽Gen Z聽the聽most relevant ad聽medium is聽not television, it聽is聽actually social media. For the聽first year this year in聽2018聽we鈥檙e expecting mobile advertising, meaning display ads on聽your mobile devices that few of聽us聽ever really try to聽hit purposely. We聽think that it鈥檚 surpassing television advertising in聽spend. Ad聽investments by聽all these major brands, believe me, we聽know what we鈥檙e doing, they know what they鈥檙e doing. It聽has shifted from television as聽the聽primary to聽mobile devices as聽the聽primary advertising, the聽single largest advertising investment that brands are making is聽now mobile. Crazy, right?
Richard: Let鈥檚 tile those together now. We聽originally started with like 聯Richard, what do聽you think of聽distribution stat?聰 I聽said that鈥檚 kind of聽wide. That鈥檚 OK. What kind of聽wide and聽we聽narrow down to聽some of聽the聽things that are going on. You guys are working on聽social selling and聽to聽your point and聽the聽stats right there. We聽have 48聽%.聽They are these millennials that Jesse鈥檚 for聽the聽most part.
Jesse: Millenials and聽Z.
Richard: They are staring at聽phones and聽so聽we鈥
Jesse: Don鈥檛 quote me聽on聽that (laughing.)
Richard: I聽know there are other ones changing the聽world鈥 one shoe at聽a聽time. But where I聽was going at, you have to聽keep that in聽mind as聽a聽seller. If聽that鈥檚 your market where do聽you need to聽be聽to聽get in聽front of聽them? Because in聽this world where they say no聽like and聽trust I聽can鈥檛 guarantee they鈥檙e going to聽like you, I聽can鈥檛 guarantee they鈥檙e going to聽trust you, but I聽can guarantee you they鈥檙e not going to聽like you or聽trust you if聽they don鈥檛 know about you. Sure. Right. And so聽where are they? If聽you鈥檙e not necessarily selling to聽them you might get a聽get out of聽jail free card on聽that because you鈥檙e not selling to聽millennials maybe, but there are grandmas on聽there. There are all kinds of聽people out there.
Jesse: It鈥檚 not just millennials who鈥檙e looking at聽their phones. We鈥檙e all looking our phones too and聽we聽might think we聽don鈥檛 click on聽those banners or聽we聽might not think we鈥檙e not affected by聽them. But there鈥檚 a聽reason that mobile ad聽spending is聽going to聽surpass TV聽like it聽obviously works, it鈥檚 super target.
Richard: Literally where I聽was going with it. Think of聽the聽old term聽鈥 broadcast. It聽was about casting a聽broad kind of聽wide message that you hope would stick with someone. But now with all the聽A.I. and聽all this stuff going on, they鈥檙e getting better and聽better at聽putting in聽your feed what you鈥檙e interested in.
David: Well, let me聽give you some more stats because it鈥檚 kind of聽why I鈥檓 here for聽and聽it鈥檚 fun. Again the聽National Retail Federation says (and this just came out) that
Jesse: I聽mean, advertising works, period. Right? When you think about that mobile ad聽spending is聽now surpassing TV. I聽think that鈥檚 a聽huge opportunity for聽small merchants because for聽a聽small merchant the聽ability to聽make a聽TV聽commercial is聽probably not going to聽happen. It鈥檚 a聽tough deal: you鈥檝e got to聽have creative commercial it鈥檚 is聽expensive, period. But creating a聽mobile ad聽is聽very easy. You have a聽phone in聽your pocket, you pick it聽up. You push the聽button. You record a聽video. I聽could record you two sitting across from me聽right now and聽we聽can make a聽video commercial. Maybe not the聽best one but then you can add all these different graphics and聽things. It鈥檚 amazing what you can do聽with your phone to聽create a聽really good ad.
David: Yes. And you鈥檝e actually just added steps of聽complexity that aren鈥檛 even really needed. The tools that we聽offer right now allow you to聽just simply connect your product feed in聽the聽artificial intelligence that we鈥檝e aligned as聽partners. 黑料门 allows you to聽actually choose a聽category and聽a聽basic target and聽set your budget and聽artificial intelligence will actually do聽most of聽it聽for聽you. That鈥檚 a聽
Jesse: All right. Breaking news everyone. We聽did wait for聽this.
David: It鈥檚 the聽seventh year that 黑料门 has been plugged into selling on聽Facebook. OK. Seven years.
Jesse: Wow.
David: It鈥檚 huge. So聽that was really one of聽our number one. That was the聽number one sales tool for聽many years. Now we鈥檙e seeing the聽fastest growth and聽adoption obviously coming from Instagram. That鈥檚 been fantastic for聽our partners unrelated to聽these. Obviously, we鈥檝e already talked a聽lot about Facebook, we鈥檝e talked a聽lot about Instagram, but you know I聽think it鈥檚 really a聽smart thing to聽look at聽right now going into the聽holidays to聽be聽looking at聽probably you know the聽Google Shopping opportunities with artificial intelligence. I聽think that鈥檚 probably a聽pretty key point.
Jesse: Yeah, I聽mean we聽talked about this a聽couple weeks ago on聽a聽podcast, you can literally get going with Google Shopping. Automated Google Shopping thing. In, I聽don鈥檛 know, five minutes. Right. You just plug into it, you connect your products. Put a聽credit card in聽
Richard: That鈥檚 actually something I聽was going to聽ask earlier Dave. You guys really are amazing at聽getting something up聽and聽going quickly. And if聽someone wanted to聽do聽a聽side hustle and聽they just want to聽try something out before they may be聽quit their job or聽stay at聽home mother/father wants to聽do聽something on聽the聽side. But I鈥檝e also noticed the聽more I鈥檝e worked with 黑料门 that you get some pretty darn close to聽an聽enterprise if聽not enterprise features also. This isn鈥檛 really something that anyone does. You鈥檝e got to聽grow to聽a聽pretty darn big company before you鈥檙e even remotely thinking of聽switching out of聽this, so聽you can kind of聽get up聽and聽go聽and聽ride away. How big! What are some of聽the聽kind of聽interesting different things you鈥檝e seen someone doing with 黑料门 at聽a聽close to聽enterprise level? Do聽you have any聽clients that you could think of? You don鈥檛 have to聽specifically name them but just something interesting that they鈥檙e doing with the聽software.
David: You鈥檇 be聽surprised at聽the聽number of聽
Jesse: Yeah please, guys. This is聽a聽way for聽you to聽promote your store. We鈥檝e had some people on聽recently, you probably just heard Joe Colker from Heroic Kid. We聽had CakeSafe on. CakeSafe actually did a聽recent, what he聽called a聽case study. That鈥檚 what鈥檚 available on聽the聽website too. I聽mean we聽have a聽ton of聽examples of聽stores that are doing well with 黑料门. I聽think the聽best one good thing about this podcast is聽if聽you want thousands of聽people to聽hear about your store please, message us聽in聽the聽in聽the聽notes. Actually, it鈥檚 a聽podcast@ecwid.com if聽you want to聽send an聽email and聽tell us聽your story so聽we聽definitely want to聽have more merchants on聽to聽help your story and聽it鈥檚 the聽holidays too.
David: We聽love the聽feedback too. Literally, inside the聽company, we聽love talking about the聽success stories and聽sharing them. And it聽makes us聽all feel good because that鈥檚 kind of聽why we鈥檙e here. We聽all love what we鈥檙e doing here. Let me聽jump on聽that CakeSafe thing. You need to聽check this out, it鈥檚 not that super long. It鈥檚 a聽pretty short case study. But we鈥檝e been working with CakeSafe, we聽love these guys, really cool product. You know there are bakers out there, they make a聽cake and聽they鈥檙e trying to聽transport these things. It鈥檚 really actually pretty hard to聽do. So聽this is聽like a聽vault for聽your cake that makes it聽easy to聽transport without getting bumped so聽the聽wedding cake doesn鈥檛 get ruined. Anyway, they said, 聯we鈥檒l try this Google Shopping thing with you guys聰. And they had an聽18X return on聽ad聽spend. So聽I聽don鈥檛 want those return on聽ads been numbered to聽scare you guys. But what that means is聽if聽they invested one dollar they got $18聽back on聽their investments. And it鈥檚 not like they鈥檙e not sophisticated marketers, they鈥檙e sophisticated chefs and聽bakers and聽they had a聽really cool original idea but it聽really comes down to聽the聽content that was great, and聽now it鈥檚 the聽distribution engine. So聽for聽small companies, it聽can really help to聽use paid media to聽try to聽get the聽word out there. Well, that鈥檚 one of聽the聽things about a聽big brand right. And when you know a聽lot of聽our clients are smaller brands and聽you know they grow.
