Think about the听last time you used a听keyword research tool to听understand your niche. You likely plugged in听some seed keywords (such as听聯women鈥檚 boots聰), hit 聯Search聰 and听got a听bunch of听related keywords in听return.

While this list of听keywords might be听good for听SEO, it听doesn鈥檛 give you any听real insight into your niche. You can鈥檛 tell, for听instance, how 聯thigh high boots聰 and听聯over the听knee boots聰 are different, what materials they鈥檙e usually made from, or听how your customers actually use them.

This lack of听contextual data makes conventional research tools woefully inadequate for听understanding your customers.

Below, we鈥檒l show you 5听actionable ways you can use Pinterest for听niche research.

1.听Search for听popular products in听your niche

One of听the听easiest听鈥 and听most useful听鈥 ways to听use Pinterest is听to听figure out what鈥檚 currently popular in听your niche.

This works particularly well for听trend-influenced product categories such as听fashion. Pinterest will tell you exactly what color, style or听design-type has been trending recently.

Finding these products is听easy听鈥 just enter a听broad keyword related to听your product in听the听search bar, say 聯scarves聰.

Pinterest automatically sorts the听results by听聯most pinned聰. This shows you what people are actually pinning.

You can refine the听results further by听clicking one of听the听聯Guided Search聰 buttons at听the听top. This will add the听keyword in听question to听the听search.

In听the听above example, clicking on听聯Silk聰 changes the听search to听聯scarves +听silk聰.

There is听another way to听discover trending products听鈥 by听going to听the听聯Discover聰 section. This is听the听compass icon next to听your account icon in听the听top right corner.

The 聯Discover聰 section features trending hand-picked collections from across Pinterest. You might not always find products from your niche, but when you do, it听can be听a听great source of听consumer insight.

For example, the听聯Discover聰 section shows us听that 聯Circle Scarves聰 are trending in听Women鈥檚 Style.

Clicking the听product category will show you trending pins featuring the听product-type.

2.听Understand how people use your products in听daily life

Understand that Pinterest users usually pin the听聯idealized聰 image of听a听product and听how it听is听used. You won鈥檛 find a听pin of听a听person simply wearing a听pair of听boots; it听will usually be听a听high-quality shot of听the听boots paired with a听matching pair of听jeans and听other accessories.

This gives you a听ton of听insight into:

All this insight can help you develop a听stronger brand. If听Pinterest shows you that pins featuring a听pair of听boots at听a听specific angle are popular, you can get more product images from that angle. If听most popular pins show boots being worn with blue jeans, you can emphasize that in听your marketing imagery.

3.听Find related products

Start by听searching for听your product keyword. Next, find a听pin that you like and听click on听it. If听you scroll down, you will see a听list of听聯Related Pins聰:

Instead of听looking up听individual pins, you can also search for听boards matching your product keyword(s).

To听do听this, look up听your keyword as听you normally would, but instead of听聯All Pins聰, click on听聯Boards聰 in听the听top menu.

This will show you a听bunch of听boards that match your keywords.

Boards are human-curated and听usually revolve around a听single product-type. This makes them ideal for听finding related products for听any听product-category.

Promoted pins听鈥 Pinterest鈥檚 ad听offering听鈥 has a听section where it听suggested keywords and听ideas related to听your current promotion. You can use this data to听find related products.

To听use this feature, you鈥檒l need a听Pinterest business account. Follow the听.

Once you have the听account set up, click the听聯+聰 icon next to听your profile and听click 聯Create Ad聰 to听go听to听the听ad听manager.

Choose 聯Engagement聰 from the听ad听type. Enter a听campaign name and听any听budget (we won鈥檛 actually have to听run the听ads).

Next, click 聯Add more details聰. On听the听next screen, scroll down to听聯Keywords聰 and听enter your target keyword.

You should now see a听bunch of听related keywords.

Do听this for听different variations of听your product keyword to听come up听with even more related product ideas.

4.听See what your competitors are doing

Keeping track of听your competitors鈥 products and听marketing has obvious benefits听鈥 you can know what鈥檚 working for听them (and what鈥檚 not) and听fine-tune your offerings accordingly.

Start by听doing a听keyword search for听your competitor.

You can fine-tune the听results further by听looking searching only 聯Buyable Pins聰 from the听top menu.

聯Buyable Pins聰 are special pins which users can directly purchase from inside Pinterest. These pins are typically uploaded by听retailers instead of听normal users.

This means that you鈥檒l get a听smaller product selection, but all images and听products will be听a)听available to听buy, and听b)听from a听specific brand.

This makes Buyable Pins a听great way to听research a听competitor quickly.

5.听Get content ideas related to听your audience

Pinterest can also help you brainstorm content ideas for听your blog or听discover new products to听add to听your store.

We鈥檒l use 聯Guided Search聰 to听find these ideas.

Start by听searching for听a听base keyword related to听your product听鈥 say, 聯women鈥檚 boots聰.

You鈥檒l see a听list of听search suggestions at听the听top of听the听page. This is听Pinterest鈥檚 聯Guided Search聰.

We鈥檙e going to听collect all the听suggestions from this list and听use them as听keywords for听a听content campaign.

To听do听this, click and听drag from the听top left corner of听the听screen to听the听bottom right to听select all Guided Search suggestions. Hit 聯CTRL +听C聰听to听copy these to听your clipboard.

Now open Word and听paste this list into a听new document.

You鈥檒l notice that every term has a听keyword and听a听category.

Our job is听to听extract the听keyword and听category from each term.

To听do听this, start by听hitting CTRL+H to听open the听Find/Replace tool. Enter 聯Search for听聭聮听into the听聭Find聮 box and听聭^p聮 into the听Replace field. Hit 聭Replace All聮.

This will show you a听list of听keywords followed by听the听category.

You can use these keywords to听brainstorm new content ideas or听even to听organize your existing products into more semantically relevant categories.
